HellDunkel··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
The EU is going to be thinking long and hard if the US really is so much more friendly than China.
HellDunkel··on Who Did the Work?
The work trial thing seems disrespectful to me. Why is it that nobody ever asks detailed questions about my CV?
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Did you grow up with adventure games and how did that affect yo?
Same but it did not strike me this had to do with sierra until you mentioned it. My kids too are very curious if they see me playing an adventure- they don’t mind the blocky pixels at all.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Who Are Your Favorite Photography and Generative Coding Artists?
Photography: Andreas Gursky, Thomas Demand, Sebastiao Saldago. Taschen Publishing has the best art books of all.
HellDunkel··on VFX Giant MPC and May Shut Down Amid 'Severe Financial Challenges'
Apparently Scanline VFX, The Mill and Sehsucht are also in trouble.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Did you grow up with adventure games and how did that affect yo?
Competitive programming sounds aweful. Anything creative should be made of joy!
HellDunkel··on 'The tyranny of apps': those without smartphones are unfairly penalised
Some even want to unleash the tyranny of apps upon our children at school. Can you imagine? Brainrot is a thing.
HellDunkel··on You can’t build a moat with AI (redux)
Imagine i wrote a history piece on the medieval ages and i decided to use a medieval font. :)
HellDunkel··on You can’t build a moat with AI (redux)
When will people realize that the use of AI art in any piece of content is almost as bad as bad typo or ads. It devalues the content and even adds a barrier to acceptance and produces the feeling that the creator does not value my time and attention.
HellDunkel··on Children's arithmetic skills do not transfer between applied and academic math
Made me laugh because I have no higher education but was able to answer the polarization question.
HellDunkel··on Hacker News for Gamedev
fix the colors!
HellDunkel··on Tell HN: I'm a programmer who bought a typewriter
Owning a record player and a vinyl collection helps me reconnect with music and keep the inspiration up. I went digital for quite- years actually- but after the initial joys of discovering and collecting digital i found that my interest in music started to wane. It only came back after investing some time in my vinyl collection again though buying&selling.

I think it is healthy to keep a good part of ones life analog, detached from a computer screen or mobile device.

HellDunkel··on Mark Zuckerberg says AI could soon do the work of Meta's midlevel engineers
direct translation: „we at meta are a super innovation company and among the leaders in AI. our valuation will go through the roof this year.“ (buy stocks now i need to catch up with my billionaire „friends“.
HellDunkel··on Who killed the rave?
The brits have a tendency to claim a lot of things in regard to electronic music but they own „raves“ just as much as they own „acid house“.
HellDunkel··on Who killed the rave?
I think you are missing something. Clubs have always been the „mothers“ of raves. This has been the case since the only days of chicago warehouse parties up until what is now the case in berlin. Once the clubs go away, the off location parties will disappear next.
HellDunkel··on Who killed the rave?
My guess is: the pandemic and online dating.
HellDunkel··on Cesium for Unreal – Bring the Real World to Unreal Engine
It is not- it is a tremenous relief. If Lumen doesnt fit your needs you can go back to light baking which of course nobody wants to.
HellDunkel··on Cesium for Unreal – Bring the Real World to Unreal Engine
These remarks are hilarious.

Nanite was never supposed to be a silver bullet but a way to enable high density mesh streaming and high fidelity shadows and lighting when used with Lumen. Both techniques work incredibly well.

The only valid criticism is games getting too expensive (to make) and frame generation can work against gameplay. But both are really up to game designers to use appropriately, not engine providers to dictate.

HellDunkel··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
The thing is- it often isn‘t (worth it) until you can put things in context and even then it is not a given you will be rewarded. I stopped reading to forcefully educate myself and just read for entertainment. Turns out I read much more and even found many more great books i want to read.
HellDunkel··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
I just finished the Cicero Trilogy by Robert Harris. Probably easier to digest than the works of the man himself and a very good read too.
HellDunkel··on Netflix tells writers to have characters "announce what they're doing"
I can see this working for individuals but what about families? And although i dont feel thinking too much about netflixes business it raises the question if this would requre to adapt their model to an ad based model rather than subscription.

Anyhow- i see a gigantic problem coming towards us caused by rapidly decreasing attention capacities and this does not help.

HellDunkel··on Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that
Can you please explain what this optimized video ecosystem of youtube is actually optimized for other than clickbait? Maybe it works for others but i fell into this for a while and now i look at it in disgust.
HellDunkel··on Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that
I am convinced that if we design media to be consumed while doing something else it will ultimately be to the detriment of the media itself. What will happen next is netflix shifting even more towards reality-tv and then end up just like MTV.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: What are the best books you read in 2024?
The Cicero Trilogy by Robert Harris: Imperium, Titan, Dictator

Fascinating pageturner that also provide some real insight what life was like in ancient rome.

HellDunkel··on The trap of "I am not an extrovert"
“Hey man, what’s up? Why don’t you approach and talk to a few here? They are friendly, you know. You like Open Source, so maybe talk to that guy (pointing to a senior of mine) and ask him how he got started.”.

A very patronizing attempt at connecting people…

HellDunkel··on What can strong engineers do that weak engineers can't?
>> Act with the generosity that you hope would be extended to you if you endured some personal tragedy that meant you couldn’t focus on work.

Absolutely. There is 0 need to act as if there was a personal tragedy. This is bad advice.

HellDunkel··on What can strong engineers do that weak engineers can't?
Many engineers feel their work is not seen. Management rarely looks at their output let alone the code. Seeing a (supposedly) weaker engineer beeing promoted instead will make you think about how to succeed next time.
HellDunkel··on The Rise of Post-Literate History
I had to use a translator to help me with this text and i am still unclear what the main point is. Tucker Carlson is a (self admitted) lier and the other podcast guy is most likely just after the clicks. Even an illiterate can smell the BS.
HellDunkel··on The 70% problem: Hard truths about AI-assisted coding
The novelty is that AI made the „pasting code“ work somehow whereas copy and paste from stack overflow did not.

Before merge and deploy you need to run the code. If it fails what do you do? search a new snippet on stack overflow? or paste the error into the ai?

This seems like a completely inefficient way of learning to me.

HellDunkel··on The 70% problem: Hard truths about AI-assisted coding
But isnt this a very ineffective way of learning from second-hand mistakes?
