HellDunkel··on The Moat of Low Status
Chapeau- i‘ll copy what you did here.
HellDunkel··on Sam Altman Slams Meta’s AI Talent Poaching: 'Missionaries Will Beat Mercenaries'
No. The cult members are less likely to be laid off. Simply because they don‘t stand out and provide less surface for attack.
HellDunkel··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
There is more to be said about the voters than about the military industrial complex here.
HellDunkel··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
If you botch the "quiet" part this seems more of a plan to get bombed quickly.
HellDunkel··on Liquid Glass – WWDC25 [video]
This view is very „hackernewsy“ and reveals a lot more about the mindset around here than the what is going on with apple. Firstly i don‘t think there is much fluctuation with the apple design team except when Ive left but i guess that was mainly due to the ceo change.

I remember a time when microsoft came around the corner with flat design on their phones and the iphone all of a sudden looked outdated. They adopted a flat look shortly after. They did that pretty well.

Thirdly and most important: noone does gaussian blurs, macro and micro transitions better than apple and it‘s a key part of their success. They are taking it one step further now. Even if it doesn‘t improve the experience for users it could help distinguish themselves visually. And there is nothing wrong with that.

HellDunkel··on Ask HN: What is your fallback job if AI takes away your career?
A few more years ago everyone wanted to be a startup founder. Then everyone wanted a cozy FAANG job and now people are afraid of AI taking it.
HellDunkel··on No one goes to happy hour after work anymore. The reason why is grim
Not a big fan of after work drinks but it‘s a great way to connect if you are new to the city. However, i think it is much better to connect and socialize with people outside of work. If financial dependencies are minimized, people tend to be more real.
HellDunkel··on The UI future is colourful and dimensional
Firstly- the airbnb redesign is still flat and minimal. Only the icon bar is different- but not in a good way. The design is too heavy, unclear and does a bad job adding to the rest. Of course the ceo is trying to paint the redesign in the best light possible but there is little reason for praise here.
HellDunkel··on AI, Heidegger, and Evangelion
This is the most perplexing thing about AI. And it is not just their own work but also every product of culture they love, which they are ready to surrender for beeing „ahead of the curve“ in very shallow ways.
HellDunkel··on The Seven-Year Rule
It feels so strange to read blogposts like this in 2025. The level of mediocrity makes you question if this has been created by a human or an ai bot. Next you start questioning yourself why you still look into your smartphone like a junkie.
HellDunkel··on Cozy video games can quell stress and anxiety
Don’t do it. I replayed Botw before Totk came out on a higher res tv. The wold felt a lot more empty than the first time and totk felt even more repetitive. I decided to be a lot morecareful with replays these days.
HellDunkel··on Germany creates 'super–high-tech ministry' for research, technology, aerospace
Or move on from software dev- or not even code a single line and jump to „architect“ or some other bs position straight out of university.
HellDunkel··on Germany creates 'super–high-tech ministry' for research, technology, aerospace
In the examples you mentioned bureaucracy is less of a problem. They could do it but this is hard work in a sense which the culture does not reward.

The problem with germans in general is that they are unwilling or badly trained in „thinking things to the end“. The will start a „Digitalisierungsministerium“ without a clear goal of what they want to achieve let alone how to get there. In the end they will waste a lot of money on ipads and businesses lock them into their ecosystems so the can‘t get out. It all goes back to the culture and a rigid educational system where everyone is supposed to stay where they are.

HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
I did and calling it a golden age is not wrong compared to what we have now. I was referrimg to the golden age of „voice only“ here
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
Its already stained. And it was never golden so why care?
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
It almost feels like an old people kind of thing to do but i actually enjoy the stubbornness of age.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
You mean like the golden age of speech recognition a couple of years ago when they claimed 80% of computer interfacing will be voice only?
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
I still use google. However, the most annoying thing i find is the AI generated response. I use google as a translator by adding „dict“ to the search. I also use the search function on old fashioned forums. It works. Yesterday i tried Chat GPT on math homework of one of my kids. Result was just crazy wrong. Complete garbage.
HellDunkel··on The End of Sierra as We Knew It, Part 1: The Acquisition
It wasnt that much off, right?
HellDunkel··on The End of Sierra as We Knew It, Part 1: The Acquisition
The business side of things with sierra is certainly spectacular. But the story of the characters making the games would be so much more interesting. Where did the humor come from? What was office live? How come the games were both topsellers and also extremly silly? I remeber a space quest scene where a room full of computers was a joke on sierra offices. How did that make it into the final product?
HellDunkel··on Digital Echoes and Unquiet Minds
I agree to a lot of this. But there is something even more disturbing than the constant surveillance. With the rise of AI we can no longer be sure if what we devote our attention to is an artefact of culture or just some derivative that has been automatically created to keep our attention up. And we ultimately have to ask ourselfs what the hell are we doing here? If history is removed from the artefact it becomes meaningless but how do we evaluate that and what is the consequence? Live music and theatre plays instead of movies and video games?
HellDunkel··on 4o Image Generation
I think it is not the AI but you who is wrong here. A full glass of wine is filled only up to the point of max radius so that the surface to air is maxed an the wine can breathe. This is what we taught the AI to consider „a full glass of wine“ and it perfectly gets it right.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Advice for tolerating the "corporate" aspect of software jobs?
Dont listen to this advice.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Advice for tolerating the "corporate" aspect of software jobs?
The 90ies just called- they want their lame it jokes back.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Advice for tolerating the "corporate" aspect of software jobs?
We have heard this a couple of times but lets be honest- its BS. Making software is hard work and you are paid for that. You are not paid to walk around the office to see if there is any savings to be made. They have a different person for that.
HellDunkel··on Imagining the Dinosaurs: How art, science combined to bring a lost world to life
I have been fascinated with dinosaur paintings as long as i can think of. There is a wonderful book by Taschen on the subject which has a lot more of these illustrations/ Paleoart. The Apple documentary by Jon Faveau is also highly recommended. Are there any institutions trying to accurately vizualize dinosaurs in a scientific manner? Archeologists usually focus on single facts but dont seem to be so interested in lifelike images. VFX Movies on the otherhand sadly don’t care for the facts most of the time. Everytime i go to the local paleo musem i start to think we could do a lot better and the kids would love it too.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: How Do You Keep Up with Tech and Business News Without Wasting Time?
The idea of reading anything AI generated repells me. Just reading the headlines is something i also have zero interest in- i see them as a filter to get to the interesting stuff and i demand authenticity and senserity of anything i consider to read or consume.

You guys need to stop AI generating or the internet will be a complete mess very soon. No genuine beeing will ever read that trash and your lifetime will be needlessly wasted.

The fact that you are overwhelmed by tech and business news is concerning. Go outside, look at the birds and trees- your body and soul will be thankful.

HellDunkel··on Youth and what happens when it's gone
Complete and utter garbage. This whole idea where you set yoursef the goal to be among the youngest top writers is just silly. How can you hope to write a great book if that is not even a priority? Also, what does it help that you wrote this one great book at a young age? The readers certainly wont care. I get the author sees that but he/she still follows the same thinking.
HellDunkel··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Let me help you out: one country invading the other, destroying homes and lives. But that should not concern you much as apparently it is not you who is under attack.
HellDunkel··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
It should be crystal clear now who the leader of the free world really is.
