HellDunkel··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
Greetings from western europe. Not so bad and communist around here. They call it social capitalism.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: Not treated respectfully by colleague – advice?
Keep calm. You have time and the team on your side, if not management. Don’t let hin drag you down, he will only continue to sabotage himself. All you need to do is mitigate risk and update management on his misdoings.
HellDunkel··on The new calculus of AI-based coding
No.

The reason AI code generation works so well is a) it is text based- the training data is huge and b) the output is not the final result but a human readable blueprint (source code), ready to be made fit by a human who can form an abstract idea of the whole in his head. The final product is the compiled machine code, we use compilers to do that, not LLMs.

Ai genereted code is not suitable to be directly transferred to the final product awaiting validation by TDD, it would simply be very inefficient to do so.

HellDunkel··on You are the scariest monster in the woods
I am increasingly less willing to take this stuff seriously. A catchy headline, that’s about it.
HellDunkel··on Show HN: AI toy I worked on is in stores
That’s because it is a sinister idea.
HellDunkel··on Despite what's happening in the USA, renewables are winning globally
So the eqivalent solar energy is 700 000 miles… a year?
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: What do you wish existed? (October 2025)
A great dinosaur museum in my home town.

A good print magazine on fashion and music.

Good looking sneaker which are 100% renewable.

A way to configure my local print newspaper to have only the things i am interested in making it 50% lighter.

HellDunkel··on The AI coding trap
The post starts with some valid observation on how to help dev teams mature. And then, all of a sudden the junior devs are replaced by agents. That’s it. End of story.
HellDunkel··on Getting AI to work in complex codebases
I am still sceptical of the roi and the time i am supposed to sink into trying and learning these AI tools which seem to be replacing each other every week.
HellDunkel··on Generative AI as Seniority-Biased Technological Change
I can‘t believe we are really calling things „ai agents“ these days…
HellDunkel··on You’re a slow thinker. Now what?
I‘m very similar. I noticed that people who are very easy to speak to share one trait: they have no shame to tell you the same story multiple times. It bores the hell out of me every times. If i try to do it, i get bored as well.
HellDunkel··on If AI agents take the jobs, who buys the stuff?
We see the opposite happening with companies getting rid of employees and pouring ever penny into AI not to get left behind in the race.
HellDunkel··on Rasterizer: A GPU-accelerated 2D vector graphics engine in ~4k LOC
Thanks for the answer. You could make it render a rive asset for one-on-one comparison. ;)
HellDunkel··on Rasterizer: A GPU-accelerated 2D vector graphics engine in ~4k LOC
Interesting, how does this comparento the Rive renderer?
HellDunkel··on Anthropic raises $13B Series F
You completly forgot about the invention of the home computer. If we would have all been loging into some mainframe computer using a home terminal your assessment would be correct.
HellDunkel··on I Don't Like "AI"
I dont see the author expressing any views opposing these except for the „freedom of speech“ which is actually about ownership. And he is right to do so because it brings us back to the stealing and lying. If you offered me a book i would like to know if it had been made off the backs of others without compensetion or consent OR if it is a work of your own. And i feel i have a right to know.
HellDunkel··on I Don't Like "AI"
This post was top 3 in HN. Now shadowbanned. I‘m out.
HellDunkel··on I Don't Like "AI"
What do these „different values“ look like? Is stealing and lying ok for you AI evangelist folks?
HellDunkel··on Show HN: A zoomable, searchable archive of BYTE magazine
This must be the single most wonderful magazine archive i have ever seen and it's even searchable. This would be so nice to have with music, fashion and lifestlye magazines. The zooming in and out of decades is a breeze.
HellDunkel··on AI is different
Is it true that current LLMs can find bugs in complex codebases? I mean, they can also find bugs in otherwise perfectly working code
HellDunkel··on Show HN: I built an AI that turns any book into a text adventure game
The point is that we as hunan beeings have quite some elaborate filters to pick interesting things among hunan artefacts. If those are not conciously fabricated by others (i.e.: dreams, ai gen, anything random or auto generated) we tend to loose interest quickly.
HellDunkel··on Show HN: I built an AI that turns any book into a text adventure game
I neither made this assumption nor the conclusion.
HellDunkel··on Show HN: I built an AI that turns any book into a text adventure game
Because there is no point. If the author is a stochastic people machine it is simply not interesting to reflect on it. The fact people make artefacts turns them into art. A stone is not a work of art without some human doing something with it.

You may argue that stones can be interesting without beeing works of art. But the generator above takes works of art as input and somehow takes the art out if it to some degree.

HellDunkel··on Show HN: I built an AI that turns any book into a text adventure game
If art is communication- and i believe it is- why would i want to read or listen to anything AI generated? Once you are done with consuption there is no point in reflecting on it nor having a conversation about it with other fellow humans. People are not even interested in each others dreams most of the time. Unless the machine is of godlike intelligence there is just zero point.
HellDunkel··on Ask HN: How many of you are working in tech without a STEM degree?
No degree or formal education, enjoyed math at school. Helped a colleague finish college which helped solidify my math.

Spend 10 years as a sw dev, then went into VFX and design. Working in automotive design at a major OEM now.

I needed my career shifts really badly and wish the younger generation would have similar opportunities.

HellDunkel··on Don't animate height
The fact that this little animation can have such heavy performance impact tells us one thing: CSS design is flawed. That‘s it. That‘s the whole story.
HellDunkel··on How I keep up with AI progress
This. When has early adoptation paid off lately? Remember prompt engineering?
HellDunkel··on What's happening to reading?
I don’t know if i would want such thing as a tribe. Reviews are great though unless ai generated. IMHO the internet as a source of valueable information is at risk.
HellDunkel··on What's happening to reading?
A great perspective but one problem remains: AI will radically change the book market. Great new books will be even harder to find as we are drowning in a sea of words. How do we stay afloat?
HellDunkel··on When Figma starts designing us
I don’t agree with the overarching theme of „structure over spontaneity“. Some of the most impactfull print designs of the past started with „structure“ or some orher sort of „form follows function“.
