Hasu··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
I'm talking about Emancipation. So no, this isn't temporarily taking something from the rich, or something that could have been solved through "mutually beneficial voluntary action".

The government told a bunch of rich people that the incredibly valuable people they owned were no longer their property, and gave money and land to the people who previously had nothing because they hadn't been considered people. That's what kicked off your Gilded Age

You're moving the goalposts. People did not, in fact, vote for DOGE.

But that growth period also came after the largest Marxist redistribution of wealth from the rich to the poor that's ever happened in America.
Hasu··on AI is stifling new tech adoption?
You can still use vanilla-OO React.

Do you complain when other frameworks add new features without breaking backwards compatibility?

Hasu··on AI is stifling new tech adoption?
React is almost 12 years old and has dominated frontend development for almost a decade. I'd bet most JS backend projects still use Express as the webserver, and it's even older than React.

Can we please retire this meme? It's stale and adds nothing to the conversation.

Talk to any Canadian and tell me that trust in the US as an ally hasn't been irreparably damaged.

Global geopolitics are complicated. It's true on some level that no one trusts anyone else, but relative levels of trust still matter. There aren't many superpowers out there, if the US is seen as unreliable, China and the EU can step in and replace US influence. This has been happening in Africa for a couple decades or so, with China becoming increasingly influential.

These actions will drive US allies into partnerships with our rivals, which will make the US weaker. Everyone on both sides of the aisle understood this from 1946-2016.

It's public data already.
Hasu··on German civil activists win victory in election case against X
The data is publicly available. Researchers could get it by scraping, this law says that companies must provide more convenient ways to access that public data.

This has fuck all to do with government overreach or access to private data.

Hasu··on Gumroad CEO is no longer hiring junior/mid-level software engineers due to AI
As a senior+ engineer, I have no interest in working for a company that doesn't hire junior or midlevel engineers. Mentoring the next generation is not only one of the most rewarding parts of my career, it also levels me up.

The US tech industry is committing slow suicide.

They don't prioritize growth for the same reason healthy cells don't prioritize growth.

You need to be cancer or a public corporation to think growth is the most important thing.

Hasu··on DoppelBot: Replace Your CEO with an LLM
All of your points are premised on the idea that the only purpose of a corporation is to make as much money for its shareholders as possible. But that isn't true, especially in the case of a cooperative.

Most companies make decisions based on a list of priorities: they care about their shareholders/investors first, upper management second (upper management is usually bribed by the investors with equity, aligning their interests with the shareholders, so this is maybe a distinction without a difference), rank-and-file employees third, customers fourth, and anyone not involved with the company last.

The point of a cooperative is to flip this incentive structure on its head: the customers or workers are owners, so they get prioritized. The purpose of the company isn't to dominate the markets and become the biggest company ever, it's to make a better life for the people working for and patronizing the company, instead of just the people who own it.

> As an employee, I would prefer to work at a company where my equity does not have these restrictions placed on it.

Well obviously, if you're talking about equity in a company as something you can own and profit from without ongoing labor, you are definitionally a capitalist and you will be opposed to cooperatives.

> I would be very uneasy about investing anyone's retirement savings into such an organization.

The primary purpose of a cooperative is not to make profits for passive investors. This is like judging a fish on its ability to climb a tree.

Hasu··on The U.S. needs a shipbuilding revolution
Violence is not inherent to the definition of a coup, and Elon Musk, who is not a government official, who has no official status in the government, has taken direct control of the Treasury's payment systems. An unelected billionaire has illegally and unconstitutionally taken control of the United States government.

That is a coup, plain and simple.

> My impression from occasional visits to astral codex ten, however, is that the vast majority of people are reasonable and sometimes succeed to make the world a better place.

This is a blog that for the last several months had a vigorous ongoing debate about whether or not shoplifters should be subject to capital punishment.

'Reasonable' is not the word I would choose.

> They didn't select their dictator either, and have no way to remove him.

Political power comes from the consent of the ruled. All polities have a way to remove dictators. It's not pretty and causes a lot of harm, but then so do dictators.

Hasu··on Facebook ban on discussing Linux?
As a member of that crowd, you're misrepresenting the argument. It is absolutely censorship when a private company does it, but they have the right to do so; it is not illegal. But they also cannot force me to use their platform, I have the right not to use it.

I don't have a problem with the censorship here on HN, so I post here. I do have a problem with the censorship on Meta properties (aside from being offended by their product design and general aims as an organization), so I don't have accounts with them or view content on their properties. I also have the right to criticize them for their censorship, but not the right to prevent anyone else from using it if they want.

Hasu··on George R.R. Martin has co-authored a physics paper
> Guess Brandon Sanderson will have to finish their series after they die.

People say this often, and I don't get it. Sanderson is a terrible writer and his works and themes are nothing like ASOIAF. His only merit he has is "finishes books quickly". He's not even a fan of the books, he says they're "too dark" for him. He's the worst possible choice!

But I don't want anyone to finish ASOIAF if George dies before it's over. It's his story and no one else can do it right. We did this already and everyone hated it!

Hasu··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
You don't have the right for anyone to care about what you say, and never have.

Your argument seems to be that the New York Times has no choice but to publish my op-ed, because otherwise how will anyone find it?

Hasu··on Ask HN: Organize local communities without Facebook?
> They should have an obligation not to censor, because between them they can virtually block all practically available channels of communication

Absolute bullshit. It has never been easier in history to publish your own thoughts for the consumption of anyone who is interested in reading them. You can make your own website and put just about whatever you want on it. You can write and publish pamphlets or books with print on demand services. You can record audio or video with your phone and put it on your website or just send it directly to people. You can walk down to the town square and say pretty much whatever you want.

You absolutely don't need to be on Facebook or Twitter or ANY social networks to exercise your free speech. None of these companies has power over any means of communication other than their own platforms. You don't have to use their platforms.

Hasu··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
> So better not buy any computing device.

I don't have this issue on other computing devices. My PC runs all the games I want to play on it very well. I can also upgrade the hardware whenever I want, unlike in my Switch.

> Having been through the demoscene and home computing days since their birth, I can only laugh when calling Switch underpowered.

What does this have to do with the fact that the Switch has performance issues with first party Nintendo games? Hardware power only makes sense when talking about the software you want to run on it. The Switch is underpowered for software released exclusively for it, by the company that makes it. It's not underpowered for NES games, sure, but neither is an NES.

Hasu··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
I don't think the number of games in the catalogue matters in this discussion? There are hundreds of Switch games that perform great, and I don't care because I will never play them.

When I play a game and there are frame drops, stuttering, lag, dropped inputs, etc., it reduces my fun just as much as if the game were poorly designed. Maybe that's not the case for you, maybe you don't care, but I do, so do others.

I don't think Nintendo should make a console that rivals the best machine money can buy. I do think they took too long to refresh the hardware in the Switch lineup and their customers are worse off for it.

Hasu··on Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video]
Tears of the Kingdom is far from the only Switch game with performance issues. Off the top of my head, the newest Pokemon games (and the next newest, to a lesser extent) run like shit on the Switch. I've heard complaints about other games too.

It was underpowered when it was released in 2016, so it really shouldn't be that surprising.

> I really wish they had some kind of auction component to deal with multiple interested parties / reduce flakers, but I imagine eBay has some crappy software patent that they wield with an iron fist.

Facebook Ads has auctions for selling ad slots. They have the technology, they just reserve it for their real customers.

Hasu··on Drawing Animals with Margaret Mead
There are no pictures.

You're probably being downvoted because the first paragraph explains that the pictures were drawn on napkins in 1963 when the author was a child, while he was bored at a conference.

The napkins and the drawings are not the point. They have been in the trash for 80 years.

Hasu··on The Future of Htmx
It would still break if you need to modify that output in any way. Need to add a class for styling? The snapshot breaks. Need to add a new hx-attribute? The snapshot breaks. It's not tied to the logic, it's tied to whatever markup you output. You've reduced the surface area of the problem, but not eliminated it.

> If you have snapshots that are breaking for irrelevant changes, then by definition those changes don't need to be snapshotted, do they?

You're so close to getting it.

Hasu··on The Future of Htmx
I'm not sure you understand what snapshot testing is. It's a form of testing where you render frontend components and take a "snapshot", storing the output and saving it for later, then on the next test run, the component is rendered again and compared to the saved snapshot.

Any change that modifies the rendering of any component under test will break snapshot tests. It's literally just a test that says, "Is this render function still the same as it used to be?"

Hasu··on The Future of Htmx
The problem with snapshot tests is that they tend to fail when something is changed.

One property of good tests is that they only fail when something is broken.

Snapshot tests aren't really automated tests, because you have to manually check the outputs to see if failures are genuine. It's a reminder to do manual checking but it's still not an automated process.

> The best testing technique in the world can't save us from developer error.

Sure, but using a testing technique that increases developer error is unwise, and snapshot testing has done that every time I've seen it used, so I don't use it anymore.
