Hard_Space··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
From the WP article:

But it’s even more complex than that. The stories are personal. They’re cultural. They’re often told from the perspective of women, immigrants and people of color who have created and invested in a platform to share their stories. The recipe aggregator sites, bloggers note, basically tell the creators that their stories have no value. It’s the same message America has told immigrants and women for centuries, now just in electronic form.

I think that may be taking it too far, particularly since Google effectively created this entire syndrome.

Hard_Space··on DIY Mail
I realized the truth of this this year, when I launched my own self-promotional website (just a portfolio site) and assiduously configured its email, which passes every single test on the range of spam-rating testers available.

Almost none of the mail gets through.

Now I am researching outsourcing the site's mail to one of the usual suspects: mxroute, FastMail, ProtonMail, Exchange, etc. Perfectly configured mail that no-one gets to read is worthless.

Hard_Space··on “We removed the RSS feed since this technology became obsolete”
> Inoreader (paid pro version) will also allow you to create feeds for sites that do not publish via rss.

I am a paid pro subscriber on Inoreader, and use it 2-3 hours a day for my work. I should mention that it provides a very limited number of certain types of feed (custom-created RSS, Twitter feeds, etc.), and you'll run out of them almost immediately if you want to follow a lot of places.

That said, Inoreader lets you plug as many RSS feeds as you like in, far as I can tell, and I've really loaded it up.

But do watch out for the limits, because the next grade up from 'Pro' is 'Call sales'. It's not very granular.

Hard_Space··on The business of extracting knowledge from academic publications
A sign-in/sign-up necessary just to see the browser in action? Hard pass.
Hard_Space··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
Well, I'm guessing they'll need to keep a Romania IP active in a VPN when they're paying, and I got my card locked a couple of times doing that kind of thing.
Hard_Space··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
In their defense, browsing from Bucharest, the Pro page shows me this:

> Hey! You're coming from Romania where this could be too expensive. I believe in Purchasing Parity Power, and I want to make this affordable. If you need it, use the code ROPRO for an extra 52% off the regular price.

Hard_Space··on YouTube suspended my account for posting DeFi hackathon video
I forgot, to be honest, that I had two other Gmail logins running on my headless tower at the other end of the room, so requests were coming from my country and from the US simultaneously.

Since I wasn't trying to evade geoblocking, I now use a VPN that's set to my own city AND I shut down the applications on the headless machine. But that still leaves my phone sucking in mails on a non-VPN connection, and that's not so easy to fix, because I'm damned if I'll switch it off every time I need a VPN, or trouble myself to use a VPN on that too.

So, yeah, in general I'm worried too. Personally I think we'll look back on VPN use in five years the way that early 20thC cocaine addicts fondly remember when you could just buy the stuff over the counter without a scrip in pharmacies. Sorry to see China setting the pace on this one.

> that there is no serious appeals process, and no third party oversight of moderation decisions

Yes there is, see [0] - also posted by me in another reply in this thread, where I mention that my own YouTube account was suspended identically to OP earlier this year, but was restored 3-4 hours after filling out the form. The decision may or may not have been AI-driven, but I'm pretty sure there was a human in the loop behind the solution.

Don't mistake me for a Google fanboy - I had my primary Gmail account locked last week for daring to use a VPN, so I'm currently looking at de-Googling myself a bit. But to be fair, I was able to fix both issues within a few hours.

I would only add that the same thing happened to me for entirely mysterious reasons, earlier this year, and my YouTube account was restored by the 'usual channels' [0] within about 3-4 hours, without the need for publicity.

You really can't - the HN hug of death has killed it!
Hard_Space··on Clearview AI hits watchdog groups with subpoenas

I looked up that list, and, sadly, you'd pretty much have to go off-world to boycott those companies.

Hard_Space··on Ask HN: Improving health despite working in a screen-based job
I work freelance, and have been glued to my couch all day for a long time. I became physically depleted and demoralized, and the money couldn't compensate. In the end, I cut a quarter of my workload and now have at least one afternoon a week (two, some weeks) where I walk at a good pace about 7-10 miles + whatever walking I can get at weekends with my girlfriend.

I was sorry to lose the money, but there was just no other way forward, and I have to say that it's proved worth it. The work that remains, I perform better than before, and my life has more balance.

Working an office job that's been WFH'd, I don't know what the answer is, particularly in the darker winter months (for me, I am resolved to switch to morning walks and working later into the afternoon and early evening).

No, it's a goof due to time pressure. It's been corrected.

What a shame there is only one available Romanian title, since that's the language I'm learning.
Hard_Space··on Neural Actor: Neural Free-View Synthesis of Human Actors with Pose Control
No, not for me. I think you'll need to review file association actions in Firefox prefs. I have to do this regularly for PDF.
Hard_Space··on Ask HN: Has Google search got noticably worse recently?
That applies to any publishing company. I used to work at a major UK publisher. We launched a site in the entertainment space (very competitive)in 2007, and it was immediately high-ranked, because all the older properties linked to it systematically (i.e. in footers, etc.). I don't think much has changed in this regard, since then.
Hard_Space··on Dark Patterns Hall of Shame
Good, but please don't disable right-click. Should not have to use Absolute Enable Right Click Firefox add-on in order to ensure a link opens in a new tab.
Hard_Space··on WordPress 18
And not so major publishers, including hundreds, if not thousands in the top 10,000 sites. So it isn't just the Washington Post, et al. This is why I intervene on generalized advice to enable auto-updates on WordPress. I have seen it cause publishers a ton of money, and have lost a number of weekends when called in to perform damage limitation.

'Make sure you keep everything updated!' has a ton of caveats and pitfalls, that's just the reality.

Hard_Space··on ProtonMail includes Google Recaptcha for login
Something is clearly happening server-side, not client-side. The original post cites two weeks since this began, and I confirm. Surely we have not all contracted this problem in this time?
Hard_Space··on ProtonMail includes Google Recaptcha for login
Perhaps a list of apps would be helpful, otherwise it seems kind of a vague deflection.
Hard_Space··on ProtonMail includes Google Recaptcha for login
Never used HolaVPN (apparently a prerequisite for Luminati). Never heard of it. Only turn my VPN on once in a blue moon for a few minutes.
Hard_Space··on ProtonMail includes Google Recaptcha for login
Neither. Firefox on non-VPN broadband.
Hard_Space··on ProtonMail includes Google Recaptcha for login
I have two PM accounts. Since implementation, every single login includes Captcha. I log in twice a day, Captcha is never omitted.
Hard_Space··on WordPress 18
> Turn on auto-update

Having been paid quite well to migrate to and from WordPress, and to help maintain the WP sites of major publishers, I have to say that this is questionable advice. In most cases in my experience, the publisher has employed third-party providers (at huge cost) to develop frameworks and custom plugins that can easily be broken by automatic updates.

Updates need evaluation and testing in staging sites before they can be rolled out. For publishers, the first install of WP is free - everything after that costs plenty.

Hard_Space··on Had Covid? You’ll probably make antibodies for a lifetime
My girlfriend got infected about ten days after my second AstraZeneca jab. We didn't isolate. I got tested:

- Zero naturally-occurring antibodies (the kind you would get from having had COVID).

- Strong presence of vaccine-induced antibodies.

However, given the timing, I am still uncertain as to whether I contracted COVID during that post-second-jab 4 weeks when my girlfriend was infected (I gave blood for the test while I was still feeling bad in the weeks after the second injection, and I didn't spring for the 'currently infected' test, since the whole package of tests was pretty expensive).

If I got COVID now, would it not be handled exclusively by vaccine-induced antibodies, which means that any test for having had COVID in the future would still be negative?

I'm no kind of doubter, and I'm pretty sure the AZ double-jab helped me lately, but I'm not sure I'll ever know if I was ever infected, to be honest.

Hard_Space··on WordPress 18
I wish WordPress would bake a flat site exporter directly into an install, instead of forcing folks to mess about with plugins.
Hard_Space··on Researchhub: GitHub for Science
Making Google authentication the sole sign-in option reduced my curiosity from 'moderate' to 'zero'.
Hard_Space··on The “Marketing Is Evil” Problem
> If you’re marketing vape pens to teenagers, trying to convince consumers climate change is their problem, promoting vaccine misinformation, or designing dark patterns to mislead web users, stop. Your $#!^^y marketing is the problem. Your $#!^^y marketing is why people think all marketing is evil.

Exploiting weakness is Marketing #101, and deferring your moral compass to the needs of the client is Marketing #102, so I don't see any way that change will happen, in this respect.

Hard_Space··on Moving to London for a Tech Job
> especially the "take your pick" vibe

I don't really think that's a fair characterization of the mindset of the average Romanian woman, tbh, but rather seems 'drawn from the headlines'. Nor do I think the OP you're replying to meant that.
