HNisCIS··on Will AIs take all our jobs and end human history, or not? (2023)
Lets assume auto-complete does continue to progress at a rate that threatens most knowledge worker jobs and then we manage to automate the rest by using it.

There is a particular mental disorder where people will horde wealth at absolutely all costs, personal or societal, until everyone else is dead (see NZ bunkers). We commonly see this as "the billionaire class".

IF things go in that direction we need to be ready to depose all of these billionaires. I mean that quite seriously.

IF this future comes, there is a very quickly closing window where preventing them from killing all of us for their own gain is possible. After a point, surveillance and their control over state violence will be so complete that it's impossible to do anything about it.

HNisCIS··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
I've always wanted a keyboard+screen with a slot for a phone as the trackpad. Saving any money over a regular trackpad? No. Cool as hell? I think so at least...
HNisCIS··on A few random notes from Claude coding quite a bit last few weeks
That's the thing people are missing, the models plateaued a while ago, still making minor gains to this day, but not huge ones. The difference is now we've had time to figure out the tooling. I think there's still a ton of ground to cover there and maybe the models will improve given that the extra time, but I think it's foolish to consider people who predicted that completely wrong. There are also a lot of mathematical concerns that will cause problems in the near and distant future. Infinite progress is far from a given, we're already way behind where all the boosters thought we'd be my now.
HNisCIS··on Kimi Released Kimi K2.5, Open-Source Visual SOTA-Agentic Model
Bear in mind that lead may be, in large part, from the tooling rather than the model
HNisCIS··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
OP is talking about (mostly) TATP here. It's very easy to make, harder to detect with traditional methods and potent enough to be a problem. It's also hilariously unstable, will absolutely kill you before you achieve terrorism, and if you ask people on the appropriate chemistry subreddits how to make it you'll be ridiculed for days.
HNisCIS··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
Dual energy x ray has been around forever though, like decades.
HNisCIS··on LED lighting undermines visual performance unless supplemented by wider spectra
Is "ask an AI" the new rtfm?
HNisCIS··on LED lighting undermines visual performance unless supplemented by wider spectra
Sure, but I don't see them mention what they're actually using for LEDs at all. They mention a "colour fidelity index" but I'd expect a manufacturer part number or something so I can pull the datasheet.

Funny enough, the best evidence for this study is that they should probably move somewhere with more sunlight if they can't spell "color" right... /s

HNisCIS··on LED lighting undermines visual performance unless supplemented by wider spectra
No mention of CRI which seems kind of odd. LEDs for lighting are increasingly graded by how natural their emission spectrum is. Older lights are quite bad, newer ones sacrifice a tiny bit of performance for more uniform spectrum.
HNisCIS··on ICE using Palantir tool that feeds on Medicaid data
You're right, maybe calling people "illegal" is just shitty and we should be the welcoming county we were taught about on history class.
HNisCIS··on Postmortem: Our first VLEO satellite mission (with imagery and flight data)
Thanks for the response!

I assume you were setup with a linescan then instead of butcher block FPA?

HNisCIS··on Postmortem: Our first VLEO satellite mission (with imagery and flight data)
Why no fold mirror then?
HNisCIS··on Postmortem: Our first VLEO satellite mission (with imagery and flight data)
How do you manage along-track smear? At those altitudes you're pushing close to 8km/s. Traditionally you'd either need to keep the satellite rotating through the collect or somehow keep the integration time in the single digit microseconds.
HNisCIS··on Electricity use of AI coding agents
LLMs don't use much energy at all to run, they use it all at the beginning for training, which is happening constantly right now.

TLDR this is, intentionally or not, an industry puff piece that completely misunderstands the problem.

Also, even if everyone is effectively running a a dishwasher cycle every day, this is still a problem that we can't just ignore, that's still a massive increase in ecological impact.

The story itself is fine it's more the trained response to LLM voice that causes problems
HNisCIS··on Claude Code is the ChatGPT moment repeated and awful news for software stocks
Analyst slop, he's trying to say that Claude code is like the moment that chatgpt was released and everyone went apeshit for AI. The future he's describing is vaguely plausible in a narrow set of use cases a decade from now but he needs to justify the paycheck so here we are.
HNisCIS··on The microstructure of wealth transfer in prediction markets
Disbelief and normalcy are a hell of a drug. Unless someone fully expects something terrible to happen and they are deliberately trying to find out when it'll happen, most people will happily ignore all of the signs until it's too late.

Just look at the lead up to the Ukraine invasion, the US intelligence services were practically screaming from the rooftops that it was happening. Russians were obviously stacking up on two borders. Meanwhile, reporters were on the street asking people how they felt about the oncoming invasion and they all said some variation of "they've been threatening that forever, it's all talk, it won't happen".

Counting cars in Best Buy parking lots on black friday used to almost be a meme in the GIS community until ai models became reliable enough.

You can also do entertaining things like determine if a factory/data-center is running at full capacity by looking at the fans in the cooling stacks. Satellites take the red, green, and blue channels separately at different times so you can see if a fan is spinning through the apparent chromatic aberration of the blades, same deal with anything else that spins or moves. If you know the satellite you're buying imagery from, its TLE and a little information about the sensor you can work out all sorts of fun details.

My brain kinda shuts off when I read this stuff because I know it's more of a "text shaped object" than actual text. I find LLM text to be too fluffy and information sparse much of the time so I subconsciously start skimming it more than actually reading it.
HNisCIS··on Nonviolence
Beware that while you may choose nonviolence to protest this regime, your local police department will water you like a row of daisies with giant cans of mace and CS while TikTok users get bored and swipe to the next video.
HNisCIS··on Threads edges out X in daily mobile users, new data shows
I don't like this future where we're just trading users between a couple billionaires who all support the trump regime. I especially don't like that all social media is being consolidated to one company (Facebook/Meta) just like all of journalism is consolidating into one company. Bring back the anti trust.
HNisCIS··on Nonviolence
A commonly cited example is during the Battle of Seattle the cops wanted to beat the shit out of a nonviolent sit in and the black bloc protected them through a combination of strength and diversion. The non violent people are there for the optics and the violent people are there assuring that any move made on the nonviolent protesters will be rewarded swiftly.

The important part is that the violence mostly doesn't start until someone tries to hurt those who are there peacefully. Good was there peacefully so retaliation is becoming a possibility.

HNisCIS··on Texas police invested in phone-tracking software and won’t say how it’s used
Thinking on it, I suspect it's a case of a larger number of smaller techniques. Cops aren't very good at keeping secrets so it can't be something that is widely pervasive, but every department has their stupid little trick
HNisCIS··on Texas police invested in phone-tracking software and won’t say how it’s used
I personally don't think we are, a few hundred people were able to storm the capital, many were eventually arrested but if they had more numbers and pressed a coup wasn't off the table. The issue is the level of needed "right time, right place" is increasing and Americans are too comfortable right now to take the risks necessary.
HNisCIS··on Texas police invested in phone-tracking software and won’t say how it’s used
The race is between the rich trying to achieve a level of surveillance based omnipotence such that rebellion/revolution/dissent/protest/etc are fundamentally impossible...and the US populace gaining class consciousness. I don't have high hopes for the second one winning.

I want people to think about that for a second though. Imagine in a decade cops have such a technological edge in both surveillance and force that you cannot even begin to protest billionaires enslaving you let alone stage a political revolution.

HNisCIS··on Texas police invested in phone-tracking software and won’t say how it’s used
Yeah seems like that's quite explicitly the goal. The question is, what means or method are they trying to hide and is it hyper illegal or just something they don't want to be pubic knowledge?
