If SHTF, then we should think about old-school methods based on animal extraction. The process is involved, but still approachable.

My daughter did a project in her high school chemistry class on the entire process, describing the steps involved - I don't have that paper handy, but if a high school student can work it out it's probably available elsewhere. She later told me that this project was part of her post-apocalypse-family-survival-plan;)

Guidii··on The Amazon 'Personal Games' Policy
CA Labor Code Section 2780 includes a fairly broad exception: "except for the inventions which: Relate at the time of conception or reduction to practice of the invention to the employer's business, or actual or anticipated research or development of the employer"

For a company like Google or Amazon, I'm not sure that there's very much that falls within 2780.

Nianticlabs.com used to be part of Google. And stadia is still a thing, even if the games studio isn't.

This gave me the TOS matched to the country that Google thinks I'm in. (They're correct, in my case)

^this. For business-critical operations you almost _never_ want to have your service shut down, especially as a surprising result of a big spike in usage.

Do you have a source for that?
Guidii··on Google Analytics: Stop feeding the beast
Thanks for posting a thoughtful reply. It's great to see reasoned discussion on this site. Like most tech issues, there's a lot of nuance in this, and it's helpful to be able to hear the benefits on all sides of an issue.

Disclaimer: I'm a googler, but not in the analytics space. I don't have the background to meaningfully contribute to this, and will bow to lkmg's expertise. I also really like my job;)

Guidii··on Google Blocking Web Privacy Proposals at W3C (2019)
Here's what I got from sniffing through the group's posts.

The proposed charter is at [0]. Google raised an objection to the charter in [1]. Chris Wilson posted some clarifications in [2] and Daniel Glazmen posted a response/comment in [3].

As far as I can tell, an objection was raised in a consensus-based discussion. I didn't see any evidence of support from the "other 23" or of any actual vote taking place. I'd assume that others would know more about any such details.

Short answer is that the amount of time and energy to create and maintain it wouldn't be justified by the expected gain.

I'm not even sure what moz would gain here.

Guidii··on The Presence of One’s Own Smartphone Reduces Available Cognitive Capacity (2017)
>Nor can it deepen, because the resource requirements for producing and powering higher technology come at an ever-increasing cost...

I'm pretty sure that the "bang for the buck" slope is pointed in the other direction. Thus, I'd re-consider your "nor can it deepen" conclusion.

Guidii··on What killed Quayside, Sidewalk Labs’ ambitious smart city in Toronto?
Did money flow from the city to Alphabet? My understanding was that it was hugely in the opposite direction, with sidewalk investing alphabet money into the project.
Guidii··on Google Search Upgrades Make It Harder for Websites to Win Traffic
Your argument assumes this is a fixed-sum game?

The story changes if the web continues to grow and more folks do more business over the web.

Guidii··on 6 months in and $1k MRR: my biggest mistakes so far
As a browser developer, I really do want to know why folks choose native over web. [Disclaimer: I'm not denying that there are sometimes valid reasons!]

If you do reach that point, I hope you share the factors contributing to your decision.

Guidii··on 6 months in and $1k MRR: my biggest mistakes so far
WRT the android/ios app question: Why do you want to implement a native app? Seems like a significant investment if you're already meeting user needs with your PWA offering.

Guidii··on Firebase outages and misleading status reporting
Firebase offers a variety of individual services, and most apps pick up only the services they need. So reporting service-by-service makes more sense.
Guidii··on Google loses ‘right to be forgotten’ case
Thanks - it's helpful to hear your perspective on this.

What I don't understand though, is how this is supposed to help. If you want a fact to disappear, shouldn't you work that out with the publisher? Until you do that, it isn't really forgotten... just kind of badly remembered. I mean, people can still access that story as long as it's on the internet.

Guidii··on H3: A Hexagonal Hierarchical Geospatial Indexing System
So there are a few reasons to favour hexagons (or triangles) over squares....

Squares don't pack as closely as hexes, meaning that you can get 18% more hexes into a space than squares for a given perimeter-size. Squares also degenerate badly over the surface of the sphere.... you can't keep a consistent size as you change latitude, and they turn into triangles when you reach the poles.
