Gud··on EV Sales Are Booming in Europe with Gasoline at $10 a Gallon
Serious question.

Can you get this money if you instead choose a much better option, like riding the bike or going with public transport?

Or is this only for people who choose cars?

Gud··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Great, now how about countries where solar is a non-starter?
Gud··on I am done with this shit
I disagree hard. I am a tinkerer wannabe entrepreneur and I'm having the time of my life.

I just one shot a plugin for my wife's sketchup(the ability to easily export 2D from sketchup) in Ruby. I don't even know what Ruby looks like.

Simultaneously, I am fine tuning my mail setup(FreeBSD/postfix/dovecot/OpenDKIM/etc) using ChatGPT and Claude.

I set it up long before these AI things was a thing... But I am loving that I can take my rickety server held together by duct tape(though I had done things "right") STRONG, simply because it frees me from tedious, tedious shell scripting. I can focus my energy on that fun shit, not trying to remember the shell dialect I am currently employing...

Gud··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
Why wouldn't it be so "benign"? Unlike the USA, China seems to have pretty sane leadership in general.
Gud··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
"knowing how to search" became useless when Google almost exclusively started returning SEO garbage. There was no longer any way to know how to search.
Gud··on Apple Mac mini review
BYD were early adopters of the electric vehicle(they already dominated electric buses, having plants in the USA and Europe 10 years ago).

The rest of the car industry was sleeping on electric, while BYD made it their sole focus. That s why they're now eating everyones lunch.

Gud··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
What happened? Link?
Gud··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Have you been to "the EU"? It's a very diverse place and hardly "shit".
Gud··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Theres a big difference.

We have social conventions regulating this.

Suddenly, mega corporations were allowed to digest(sometimes by illegally pirating “data”, and sometimes by achieving their training corpus and subsequently destroying the copies) and digest this information in a novel way, without any discussion or law making.

You may argue it’s beneficial (it very well could be, I use ChatGPT and Claude all the time), but let’s not pretend it’s the same as learning from your history teacher…

Gud··on The Return of Sail Power: Cargo Ships Are Turning Back to the Wind
Diesel electric are not at all the same as an electric train network. Electric trains have a very interesting property, as they work as a grid as both producers, feeding back when they are breaking.

You made a second point, that most trains are already "diesel electric", I am pointing out, that the function is very different from an electric train, and much less friendly(and less efficient) to the environment.

Gud··on The Return of Sail Power: Cargo Ships Are Turning Back to the Wind
Diesel... electric. Now remove the word diesel.

It reduces the carbon footprint considerably if you don't have to fill up your trains with carbon.

Gud··on Backups Aren't Simple
I use ZFS and do off site backups using rsync.net.
Gud··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Not true, this very site has no ads.
Gud··on How much oil-market buffer is left?
The "plans" were never used though. This whole affair is conducted by imbeciles.
Gud··on Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month
Why wouldn't it be feasible for Apple, with an unlimited war chest, to go after Asahi? I am not saying they will, but it is certainly possible for them.
Gud··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
So why do it then? Just to sabotage their own country? That makes no sense.

It makes more sense that this is a continent wide action taken by Russia, considering the similar event in France just a few days ago.

Gud··on Dystopian Surveillance Is Becoming a Reality
there is no "becoming", it has been a fact for long time, and expect it to get a lot worse.
Gud··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
This may sound stupid to a predominantly GNU/Linux audience, but as a FreeBSD user(and Linux user!), when a daemon is not available for FreeBSD, it's a very bad sign.

"Because Snikket is designed natively as a tightly integrated suite of Docker containers built around the Prosody XMPP server, running it natively on FreeBSD is complex."

Holy shit

Gud··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
You don't have to do it all the time as your primary interface. My wife asks Siri questions all the time while she's busy. "Siri, what's the time?", "Siri what will the temperature be in four hours?" etc. It's not "terrible", it's pretty smart.
Gud··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
No, that is not "common knowledge". You are supposed to be able to disable that unwanted feature.
Gud··on Houthis used Claude Code to develop missile guidance software: Anthropic
We've been making PID loops for a lot longer.
Gud··on Killing with a car costs $1.6M, California requires drivers to carry $30K
It was not a mistake, it was done deliberately.
Gud··on StarCraft returns in 2030 as an open-world shooter
According to?

I play AoE2 and it’s still growing.

Gud··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
Who is this “everyone”? Speak for yourself.
Gud··on Feeling Sad about AI
I’m like you, but I never “loved writing code” 95% of it is stringing libraries/APIs together. Same old CRUD.

However, I always loved making software. LLMs are a godsend. I just wish I could run it on my own

Gud··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
Calling AI "hype" is like calling the internet hype.
Gud··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
Swedens main issue is a political class disconnected from reality.
Gud··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
You didn’t need “hindsight”. It was painfully stupid at the time.
Gud··on Trump promises $5k payout to U.S. adults if Republicans win election
That the problem is “this guy” is a misunderstanding.

Gud··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
They can also greatly assist you.

I am working on two applications using ChatGPT and Claude. I have no illusions these people won't steal/copy whatever you want to call it, "train their models". Yes, I keep unticking the boxes that allow it, that they so kindly tick for me.

But what happened to these math researchers is something else and I am not sure it's about the money for them. You don't do math research to get rich, but to get acknowledged by your peers. Yes, we live in a capitalist world so obviously you need money to feed yourself. but for some people, that is secondary.

OpenAI stole their thunder, and that's just fucked up. It's not equivalent to cranking out a CRUD app for profit.
