Grismar··on The Universe Is a Machine That Keeps Learning, Scientists Say
"Scientists say" - I just hope people realise that, in cases like these, that means "a scientist or two wrote about their opinion", which is not even related to "there is scientific consensus". Also, sometimes scientists are really bad at their job.
Grismar··on World War 3 to Be Fought over Semiconductors?
The real question there is "would the world go to war with China to protect what is left of Taiwan's freedom?" You only have to look at diplomatic attitudes of the past decades to know that the answer is "of course not".

It would certainly cause massive upheaval if China tightened its grip on Taiwan, diplomatic and economic sanctions, a massive shift in semiconductor production, a change in status for other semiconductor producing countries and a delay in the forward march of computing technology.

But not World War 3.

Grismar··on Big Tech is replacing human artists with AI?
If you think art is about creating the most realistic depiction of reality, or the most varied representations of an object, or anything else that can be maximised like chess (try to win in as few moves as possible, while minimising the risk of losing), then sure. But then you don't get the first thing about art - you're talking about a particular type of decoration.
Grismar··on Big Tech is replacing human artists with AI?
"Good enough to fool a casual onlooker." Thing is, it's not a continuous spectrum from garbage, to good enough to fool a casual onlooker, to masterpiece. I'm not saying we won't figure it out someday, but the current generation of AI won't produce masterpieces - people that worry they will, confuse art with decoration. People creating decorative designs for a living should be very worried though.
Grismar··on Intensifying Seismic Crisis at La Palma Volcano: Mega-Tsunami Potential
Potentially world-ending crises everywhere - be scared, very scared. And don't trust well-known sources, pay me, so I can keep you scared.

Super-volcanoes, tsunamis, asteroids - they all happen and can be catastrophic. And La Palma is a major concern - a recent bout of activity certainly should be on the agenda for countries that would be directly affected.

But I would recommend following other sources to remain informed. Perhaps check what your local government has to offer in the way of tsunami alerts, if you think you would be affected, because checking conspiracy mongers' websites around the clock isn't a viable alternative.

Grismar··on Opal Camera
Spectacularly bad SEO and marketing, try searching for it. Vapor?
Grismar··on The Veluwemeer Aqueduct: Netherland's Unique Water Bridge
You do realise that an aqueduct carrying only water is carrying the same load as one carrying lots of ships? (maybe you do) The weight of the ships displaces exactly the amount of water with that weight. There is of course some water movement to deal with, and there are safety margins required, in case of accidents, etc. - perhaps that was your point, but I think it's worth pointing out, if people aren't familiar with aquaducts.
Grismar··on Ask HN: How can I use my phone to create things rather than consume them?
The camera is only one of the ways you can use your phone to record the world around you. Voice recorders and note-taking apps are great to quickly capture your ideas when they are still fresh.
