GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: hacker ways of fighting anxiety?
There are a couple of things I do to get away from stress. Remember you need to get away from stress, not problems. You need to solve problems, but get them out of your mind until they are needed.

1) Pick up a fun sport. Sport gets the endorphins going, gets your body working, makes you think better, feel more self-confident, etc. I take Karate for fun (hell I've been white belt for 6mo since I didnt take test) but it made me so much happier that I can't even compare myself now and 6 mo ago (don't go to the stuff like Tiger Sholmans, they are all crap, go to the cheap dojos, try a few out. Ask friends if they go.) Or play some soccer, football, basketball, just make sure to push your body just hard enough to get a good workout, definately past the "oh I'm out of breath I'm sitting this one out" play till you can't move the feet. :) Just know your limits.

2) Go out with friends, even if you are married, go do something completely useless with a friend.

3) Just sit down and clear your mind. Know that all the problems are always there until you solve them (or until you get help) but treat yourself to 5-10 minutes of complete ignorance and tranquility. Do this as often as you need it. If you need to do 30 min of work and 10 min of R&R do it! If your boss complains then tell him calmly that if he has a better way to get some stress relief you are all for it. As a human being he will understand anxiety.

4) Don't bottle it in. Talk to a spouse, a family member, a friend, a co-worker, anyone. Sometimes just letting it out can make you feel so much better. (had this happen recently, been dwelling on something for many many hrs, could not sleep, a 2 minute conversation with a co-worker just letting my feelings be known made me feel better, and in the end I just stressed over nothing. But it helped. Was not directed at the co-worker.)

5) I noticed crap food also adds to stress. Eat better. I drink water and juice (rarely), eat fruits vs candy, no fast-food like mcdonalds, burger king, subeway, anything like that, eat some cooked vegetables (for flavor). I noticed diet definitely helps. And it improves your health as a bonus.

6) STOP WORKING. You can't have your brain on full power 24/7. At some point it just crashes and if you keep pushing you will get bad results. Its why I can't drive for extended periods of time without rests, too much attention, too much brain power used, eventually I just start shutting down. Same with programming. I take breaks, read news, talk to co workers, get lots of work done, go home, see family. Do anything to shut your brain down for a small time. If you are working till 5am and you can quit (if you are good this economy means you have a chance to find a job) then quit. No crap job is worth your life.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: That AJAX-based SQL editor...
What is funny about sql designer is that it is better than any other er diagram tool I've ever used till this date. And those were native applications, this is web-based. Just goes to show you that the idea and skill is what counts, not the platform, framework, or anything else.
GrandMasterBirt··on Reverse engineering Facebook photo links; circumvents privacy settings
Yet another reason why nobody should be using facebook.

In any case we can't expect a website as big as facebook to implement encrypted urls which dynamically change with each user's session, which the session data server-side is used to decrypt and execute. Its not necessarily the best way to do things (like say ensuring the given user HAS permission to access the photo before serving it.)

O well I guess if the problem is too big for facebook, it must be too big for the rest of us. I am going to go to work tomorrow and rip it out of our application since this should not be a solvable problem.

GrandMasterBirt··on Quickest way to $30,000 profit after taxes?
The higher the risk the higher the payout. As long as it is not gambling. Hell try the stock market, oversell and wait for the stocks to drop then buy.

To make quick cash you must be willing to risk. Risk means that you have a chance to not win, in fact lose. So weigh your options wisely.

GrandMasterBirt··on Quickest way to $30,000 profit after taxes?
Pron: You will be killed.

Drugs: You will be killed.

Gambling: You will be broke.

You can deduct medical expenses from your earnings. You can file for bankruptcy, which can nullify the debt. Talk to re-financing companies, they also can cut that number down a bit.

If we knew how to just make 30k, I think we all would be doing it, nonestop.

GrandMasterBirt··on Sacrificing security for usability: security flaw in Windows 7 beta (w. proof of concept)
The problem is a tough problem. Its not MS. The goal is to prevent malicious code from tampering with a stupid user's machine.

Now what would be the ideal solution is: To open the UAC panel the user MUST type in their administrative password. After that all is fair. Sort of like what linux does to be able to configure, just need the root password.

After that don't notify of "my" security changes, just other programs making it. When it is critical then force the user to enter the admin password.

Knowing MS users though, they would say "wtf, windows is making me enter admin passwords?" and leave it to apple to make fun of that. Then you realize mac does the same thing: Need admin password? Ask for it! Need it again? Ask again!

Why can't ms just force an admin password and to make changes like that ask for the admin password with big sparkly things saying "if you enter this, the program can stick a stick up your pooper and you will be fucked, so you better trust this program or turn back now you damn idiot!"

Actually MS is being innovative by allowing things to happen, but asking for passwords or notifications only when it is deemed absolutely 100% necessary. I would say MS is more innovative than anyone else by trying such things, or they are too fucking lazy to implement root.

GrandMasterBirt··on John Carmack on Patents
Look at the current patent trends. The first company to paten an idea that having people interact via avatars interact in an online world managed by a server was not the first company to come up with the idea. However they are now suing every MMORPG on the market because any game in which users chat with eachother using avatars violate the patent.

Apple is doing such things as well patenting things like "a 3d desktop" they don't have to do much just describe a rough idea of one.

OOOOOO and my favorite is the company who is suing Apple, MS, Palm, Google due to their exclusive patent on operating systems. I am sure they invented OSes it just a few years ago.

GrandMasterBirt··on IE 8 Release candidate available for download (does load faster than Firefox)
Why I would not use IE8:

Not because it is by MS (hey windows works, and is a heluvalot cheaper than mac [though you can argue you get what you pay for])

Not because it is by MS (yet again) I don't hate MS just because they are Microsoft.

Not because it is not cross-platform. Chrome is not cross-platform (yet). More importantly if it makes my windows experience good, then fuck other platforms.

Not even because of the memory requirements. If I browse the web I want my computer 100% used up to make the absolute best experience for myself. If I want a browser and play a video game I would hope my OS can page-swap (IE8 was supposed to have a huge memory footprint).

Why? Because of plugins. Making plugins for firefox is encouraged, supported, free, and more importantly firefox is built on being customizeable. IE... not so much. And since most geeks and technology enthusiasts don't use IE I won't resort to hoping the corporations who want to build IE plugins to stay competitive to be my sources for features.

Sure the argument can be "why use plugins, the browser should do what you want" but that one dies rather quickly. MS is realizing why they are losing market share. Once IE6 dies it's market share will drop even further. The only reason why my company uses IE6 all over is because of some crappy old programs that just work on IE6. So why the hell would they want to upgrade? They don't even use those for regular internet browsing.

Now a direct critique to the claim that IE8 loads faster. How can something that has an over 100 meg memory footprint to just start up (last numbers I have) start faster than something with just a few megs unless it is pre-fetched by windows vista on startup, in which case this is not a fair comparison, thats more like cheating.

GrandMasterBirt··on IE8's JavaScript performance lags well behind Safari, Chrome
At least MS is making some improvements. The big advantage of dealing with open source projects is that you can steal from other open source probjects, while MS can't touch a single line of mozilla or webkit or v8 code since it will be forced to make their own engine open source!

Ah sweet irony.

GrandMasterBirt··on Cal to offer course in Advanced Starcraft Theory
So basically in korea the major source of income is professional gamers? Ill dig that.

Did they realize that a person with say 2 hrs time every day for 3 months and 20 dollars to buy the game + some form reading time can figure this out on their own? Shit I just described every college course.

GrandMasterBirt··on The Argument for jQuery
I have an easier argument. Come up with a half-interesting problem and ask them to solve it with and without jq. they will immediately love JQ. We snuck it in because we wanted the .load functionality. And I assure you everyone immediately fell in love. After that it was not long until cool animations started to appear. People started saying "hey whats that really cool thing you did with the UI in that app, how do we do something so cool too?"

The niceness of just DOM manipulation + some ajax simplifiers + animations = awesomeness!

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Please Review My New Site.
Very non-standard navigation up top, but not so bad, I actually like it since it is so simple.

The site looks nice. What would make sense is that the 1st page is the description up top, then tag clound. Every other page has the description on the side.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: What Would you want in a government API?
This is a quote from my friend's law professor:

"We have courts and trials because at some point we decided to trade in our shotguns for lawyers to settle disputes"

In other words shutdown() returns a Shotgun. (I am refining the API here)

GrandMasterBirt··on Hilariously Bad Web Design
I think everyone in the office just had a good laugh.

They are missing blinking bright vivid colors.

GrandMasterBirt··on EA: The Human Story
How many years old is this?
GrandMasterBirt··on Django vs. Rails: The Dead-Tree Edition
RoR has a for dummies book. Keep away from RoR. The article writer never claimed which one was better. I think Django is better just because it has no for dummies book.

On a side question for hacker news fellas: Who reads for dummies books? I mean who reads programming language books for dummies? Is there any practical use for them or is it just for people who don't know what they are doing but want to claim to know a language?

GrandMasterBirt··on Django vs. Rails: The Dead-Tree Edition
Praise the lord! Technically jesus is better than everything then.

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1232320070/ref=sr_nr_i_2?ie=UTF8...

Damn Jesus beats porn but only by 8 times! (40,491) We have ways to go people! Lets make more porn books!

GrandMasterBirt··on Django vs. Rails: The Dead-Tree Edition
I enjoyed the picture but:

Struts cookbook? Well thats not a requirement. There is the RoR cookbook. Add that to the pile.

IF you are making an xml-based external web service I don't care what language you still write the XSLT to give out as a public api. So thats another one to the ruby pile.

Struts in action? There are 2 learn struts books in that pile.

In any case if you think more than a few seconds about that image you will cut down the java side and incraese the ruby side to equalibrium.

GrandMasterBirt··on Django vs. Rails: The Dead-Tree Edition
That sneaky sonofabitch!

RoR obviously gained some massive popularity. However I don't understand why Django did not gain as much as RoR did. Python is a damn good language, which by the way is gaining some momentum due to google's big fat presence with the app engine.

So why is Ruby so popular? To be honest I am actually pretty unhappy with ruby (don't give me any more one-liner ruby scripts or I will bitch-smack yo ass) with how easy it is to make that language unreadable compared to say... python.

I work with a web server built in javascript and can tell you that with a loosely structured dynamic language it is horribly easy even for decent programmers to make unreadable code.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Which school do you attend?
Brooklyn College -- Brooklyn, NY
GrandMasterBirt··on Why I still prefer Prototype to jQuery
Argument order:

jQuery

$.each(collection,function(){ this.bla(); });

The reason index is first param is because wheb you need it it is the only param. The reason for the item param is incase you need to attach a scope object to be this!

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: What to do with a spare computer?
When I read the title I immediately knew the answer: bonfire! There is nothing more sattisfying than seeing all that metal/wood/rubber light up on fire the wood will burn, the aluminum will melt, and the rubber will stink to high heaven. Just don't think about how much that computer costs.
GrandMasterBirt··on Google tells users to drop IE6
I can finally quit supporting IE6 sometime soon. I am so happy!
GrandMasterBirt··on It's Baaaack. Oregon, Once Again, Pursuing GPS Driving Tax
This is perhaps where the truth is. As long as we can tax a little bit from many places people won't complain as if we tax a lot from one place.

The problem with the GPS tax is that the Government knows where you are all the time. I don't feel that big brother will only do good with that information.

The problem with gas tax: They want the revenue but as electric cars become a more and more realized potential, you can't tax solar power!

However in the great state of... well anywhere mid-west... EVERYONE needs to use the road. Either it is by car or by bus. How the hell do you get around in that state? You can't walk to work if work is 15 miles away! So make a larger income tax that will tax everyone for roads. Because EVERYONE needs them, so it does not matter who pays, everyone will, and more fuel efficient cars = less gas tax. Then again the post I am replying to states correctly, tax too much people complain, tax too little people complain to lack of services. Taxation is an art form and apparently we don't have good artists at the moment.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: New Years Resolutions?
Never made resolutions. If I want to do something I just do it. If it don't I don't. If I want to improve myself I just tell people what I am trying to do and ask them to ensure I don't stray. Otherwise I always felt it is deceiving myself that I will miraculously change myself somehow.
GrandMasterBirt··on How Rent Control Drives Out Affordable Housing
Rent control does more in New York. It means that if you are in a rent controlled apt they will increase your rent to the maximum allowed! Always! And they reject people if they don't earn enough money to actually have their rent go up by the maximum amount (rent cannot exceed 20% of your annual income).. And poof In fact I've been hearing that in non-rent-controlled apartments in NY the inflation rate for rent is smaller than for rent controlled apartments.
GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: What editor do you use?
I tried the Netbeans Ruby editor... and wow the difference between that and anything for eclipse is major. Code completion is useful. It can figure out what class I am referring to pretty well. Ctrl+click works nicely to see the definition of a method (no matter where it is declared, and it finds them quite well, shows list of choices if it is unclear).

Definitely worth a try for ruby.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: What editor do you use?
It looks promising, I am going to try it out, see what features it has. Can you give any more description on what you like about it and what language you use it for?

EDIT: Maybe I am missing something, but this seems like a regular text editor with no nifty features like code outline. What does it actually give you over something like vim?

GrandMasterBirt··on 2008 was the year man-made global warming was disproved
I paraphrase a critique on google's "submit an idea to make the world a better place"...

If you have an idea that could change the world for the better, and implementing that idea takes time and effort, why don't you start a company, develop the idea, help the world, and make a living doing it.

GrandMasterBirt··on GameTech lecture: Designing and Evaluating Reusable Components
Awesome! A good insight into the complexities of writing reusable libraries. While he talks about game development, the problem seen in GD is much more intense than things seen in application development. However the same concepts apply and this definitely helps with the problems I've been having at work with API designs.

If you plan on writing a framework of any sort, listen to this :)
