GrandMasterBirt··on Why AT&T Killed Google Voice
Google voice does polling every quite a few minutes so text msgs are sloooow.

Google voice dials diff phone numbers so I donrt get to make google voice my free to call phone number

Google voice works on other ATT phones like BlackBerry

I don't get the benefits of free m2m I get when calling my wife so I wind up having to use two phone numbers.

The only thing it gives is at work BBs have text msgs disabled so they use gvoice for that.

There is NO revolution. Till google nakes it work better.

O and calling requires an internet connection using the BB app. Which means where I can call on phone (say subway overground) I can't call gvoice due to no service. But I get crystal clear calling using voice plan. Its bs.

GrandMasterBirt··on How To Fly Without ID
Exactly. That is why they can't really bar anyone. Thus the lawsuits.

Its like in Argentina, they have some toll roads but in their constitution they claim that roads may not be charged for. So people pass through the tolls claiming "I am declaring that I am refusing to pay the toll in accordance to our constitution." And vuala, no toll :)

We must use our legal rights to fight back from the government grabbing power.

GrandMasterBirt··on Tell HN: Go to Google with IE, it offers Chrome DL, but not from Firefox
Clearly they need to put in a browser download choser so you can propperly select a browser you like. Obviously google is a monopoly and "google chrome" is too familiar a name, should be changed to something different.

</sarcasm>

On a side note I love almost everything about chrome. Eept that it's dom inspector can't deal with frames.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: What email client do you use?
gmail + thunderbird at work.

1 gmail account for all span (even if it looks like it might possibly have a slight chance of being span i use this email). Not forwarded. 1 gmail account (old) forwarded to main gmail account 1 gmail account main 1 work account

I use thunderbird at work to view work related emails, but gmail client to do everything else. Can't beat that damn gmail client!

GrandMasterBirt··on JobSpice (YC S09) Makes Resumes Web Friendly, With A Facebook Co-Founder
I Love It!

Maybe its not as infinitely customizeable as microsoft word, but I did in 10 minutes what took over an hour of painful moving crap around in word.

Ugh HTML/CSS is just so much easier to style. Maybe I should just learn latex and get my problems over with.

GrandMasterBirt··on Mozilla, Google, and Opera announce support for built-in 3D graphics
IE Absolutely makes billions for microsoft....

What does IE mean?

1) Your clients need windows to run it.

2) Your developers need windows to test it.

3) They can plug in some of their technologies like .Net which runs on windows servers.

4) Clients that are used to IE (dumb users) will use it at home too because its "their browser".

5) Windows also means MS Office usually (though a separate issue).

So yea how is that not their core business model?

GrandMasterBirt··on Typeface by Toyota. The iQ font Designed By A Moving Car.
EVIL MARKETING. But I love it!
GrandMasterBirt··on Wind turbines scalability limited by roads and underpasses
This is one of the worst piece of journalism I've seen.

The "omfg" stories were horrible. They are claiming that wind power sucks because we have bad drivers on the road slamming into overpasses.

GrandMasterBirt··on Blue Zones - Places In the World Where People Live to 100 and Stay Healthy
The lesson I walked away with is: live a stress free happy life with plenty of continuous low stress excersize and a healthy diet not consisting of fried fatty sugary foods.

Sub points Excersize can lead to stress - incorporate a lifestyle of excersize Have good relations with family -- less stress but out of your controll often Organic food is good.

GrandMasterBirt··on Zed Shaw: Why I (A/L)GPL
I completely agree with Zed regarding the licensing. If it is so revolutionary and gpl is unacceptable then we should just buy the right to not abide by gpl from the author.

However what happenbs if Zed gets hit by a truck tomorrow and dies. Is all hope for companies using gpled stuff for their own use gone as well?

GrandMasterBirt··on Making an Operating System Virus Free
An operating system cannot be virus free. Because of the human error. Even if we made the 100% perfect virus checker, the human part of the equation will always find a way to give out their password or admin privileges to a phishing site or many other scenarios.

That said, there are tools an OS can do to mitigate the damage that viruses can do. So while there will always be a smarter virus, there can always be a way to only let the smart virus get to something that it could have gotten to no matter what.

Its like Google Chrome. Google Chrome itself is not perfect, has MANY (those we know of, those we don't) security flaws, BUT getting out of the sandbox that Google Chrome provides is a very difficult problem. The basic idea is really to let viruses happen. Just let them get made. There will always be a security hole to exploit. As long as the damage the virus can do is very limited and moot it won't matter.

That might be what google is doing. Maybe they are just making a super-glorified browser-based system in which google chrome's sandbox protects the user while googles native client allows all sort of cool programs to run and in the end you are still on windows, but the security risk is absolutely minimal.

GrandMasterBirt··on Brainfuck compiler in brainfuck
Because they can, you can't, and you will never understand it even given all the source code.

Also nice ascii art.

Its not educational, its b0w b3f0r3 m4h sk1llz!

I must also agree with one of the posts here... It is art. Its geek art but it really is art. Judges who say source code is not art should also admit michalengelo was just some asshole who put grafitti on some holy buildings.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why everyone should use Safari for rich web development
A good point. If the FF engine is so slow it needs this, then the engine needs help.

However I see no reason why you should not be able to indicate to firefox that for this page do not optimize the javascript, then vuala good debugging. The only catch is that the optimizations need to be proven to be correct in all cases.

Once we have Safari for Linux I will consider using it as the main browser...

Scratch that, once at work we officially support it ill consider it :)

GrandMasterBirt··on Why everyone should use Safari for rich web development
Micro-Optimizations are bad? That is just a load of shit.

If you can prove that Firefox's optimizations actually make incorrect results in any way, I am 100% behind whoever claims that micro optimizations are bad. However by firefox making them it means that I don't have to worry about the nitty gritty details about what order of instructions will perform better without changing the code. Or things like loop unrolling that don't have to be done in my checked in source.

Yea I think this argument is about 30 years too late...

If anything this proves FF3 is awesome.

Regarding web standards... As much as I am 100% for having good web standards, what good is adhering to a standard when no one can use it. I use the acid tests as an indication that browser x, y and z are browsers I want to be supporting. Unfortunately I always have to support IE... Sometimes even IE6, so acid tests are just nice-to-haves at this point. I just can't wait till IE7 completely dies (hopefully it won't be as long as IE6).

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: You lose your job, with 2 months of savings. What do you do?
I highly recommend going to multiple recruiters. If for nothing else but to critique your resumes and see how they would go about selling you. Use that to either get the job or get a better idea.

2 mo. of savings is cutting it rough. If you have family who you can trust with your life, consider transferring any assets (like a car) to them and essentially squatting it out in your apartment (assuming you rent). If you have a mortgage immediately start going through the red-tape of your bank. It may be many months until they really get to you and if you play ball they may allow you to postpone enough payments until you get back on your feet.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why free software shouldn't depend on Mono or C#
Java is fine as free software. There is a reason. The JVM's specification was always open. So as long as you write a custom VM adhering to the JVM spec you are good. There are a few competitors to Sun claiming to have faster VMs.

While Sun's JVM only recently went open source, the spec was always open and sun does not have a history of suing open-source competitors to oblivion to prevent competition.

What this guy is saying is that C# is not like that. You take a risk when using C# that eventually you might wind up being forced to use proprietary windows-only software.

I still think the rant is rediculous. MS will never kill mono. MS wants to give everyone a first hit. Then they come in in shining armor with bags of coke claiming that now that you know mono, check out these libraries; now that you know these libraries writing windows-only programs is super easy.

Essentially C# + .Net is MS' Objective-C + Coca. They don't want it to die. The fact that people REALLY like .net and ported it to linux is an indication that .Net might be a good piece of work if anything. come to think of it... if Objective-C is so wonderful why is it not widely used in linux??? In fact I never heard of objective-c in linux (does it even exist?)

GrandMasterBirt··on VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 1 released
They still don't have an easy option to forward all your bios readings to the virtual machine to make it simple for windows xp oem to authenticate. Any of you know a good reference for this? The stuff on their faqs does not help.
GrandMasterBirt··on Is Twitter Dead? Yes and No
A tool to do what? Get some hype from bored-at-work followers?
GrandMasterBirt··on Is Twitter Dead? Yes and No
A 140 character message is not always enough to give a complete thought. Complete thought-based communication is more important than bursts of small messages that give rise to the digg bar and cause the craving for more and more communication because you are not really getting true interaction with the other person.

On the other hand I love how someone posted on facebook that they are going on vacation and had their house broken into since people knew no one was there.

O well Twitter and Facebook still baffle me, no idea why people use them.

GrandMasterBirt··on If Your Job’s Just a Job
One way to have a 4 hour work week is to sell a self help book like 4 hour work week and watching the suckers dig in while you reap the benefits.

Success! At least one person has done it so you know it works.

As a criticism I've seen at least one person who got to the top by being honest. Just don't follow every rule to the letter till it gives you a dissadvantage.

GrandMasterBirt··on Don't Click It
its fucking horrible... Just mouse-overs and shit moving my mouse is no longer possible to just keep track of where im reading, instead i can't stop shit from radically changing on me. Most of the time shit was just popping out without a click or anything. Very annoying I could not use it for more than 1 minute.

My post below:
GrandMasterBirt··on Ballmer: Microsoft Will Move Jobs Offshore If Taxes Rise
The united states government was first started without taxes. It collapsed in about 2 years. From that the current US government was born.

Taxes are necessary, unless you want to pay out-of-pocket for schools, the fire department, police, etc. And literally anyone who can't afford hospital treatment gets thrown out of the hospital no questions asked. No insurance? No problem, have a near-death experience which causes you to be in a hospital for 5 days? $80,000, pay up. Want people to go to jail for killing other people? Well I guess you better have enough money to sponsor a court session otherwise the criminal walks free.

Argue against taxes all you want, but I want to see a large society work without taxes.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ballmer: Microsoft Will Move Jobs Offshore If Taxes Rise
Well, there goes Microsoft's reputation.

However Balmer does have a point. If its not worth it for the company to do business in the US, then why should it? This stupid idea of "nationalism" only works for the stupid masses. To a business its where the money is.

The government right now is not making good policies to make shit not fuck up, they are just throwing money at the problem. Someone has to pay that money. Microsoft does not want to be that someone.

GrandMasterBirt··on THQ and the UFC doing slick advertising for their video game
The site is messed up on Chrome!
GrandMasterBirt··on Oh Yeah? Where's Your Patches Zed?
I love it! Petty bickering is going to ultimately hurt everyone using python...

a) Either you won't get good quality code because Zed may be right.

or

b) You will get Zed's python branch because he/others got pissed off enough and the python community will be split into two.

I say B is a good solution. Eventually python-fusion will come out. :)

Edit: Let the war begin!

GrandMasterBirt··on Landmark study: DRM truly does make pirates out of us all
I bought a dell at work. Came with windows. Installed linux ans want to set up a windows vm to use necessary win software for work.

So naturally I can't register my oem xp pro because its bound to my hardware which differs from vm. Basically I must pirate windows even though I own a copy which I should be able to legally install on a vm. Not to mention that I can't install os x just because its not apple hardware on a vm.

So yea this sort of bs is what makes us all have to resort to piracy because the alternative is too expensive.

GrandMasterBirt··on 1964 Antique modem surfs the web
total nerd porn!

I am always amazed just how much shit you can do without a computer in analog. Like a 1900s record player just uses such simple techniques to play sounds, but living in the 21st century it seems almost impossible to do without a computer chip and a sound card and some software.

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Outdoor jobs for geeks?
Funny thing... People think fire was the reason for human evolution, over 100 thou yrs old.
