GrandMasterBirt··on Using The Midori Web Browser
splain to me why chose Midori vs Google Chrome for linux? Honestly Firefox's startup time is what sets me off and hard to get Flash working (comes out-of-box for chrome) but other than that I see no need for a 3rd browser.

I was going to suggest Anemia of some sort, generally my wife was a bit Anemic at some point and iron pills helped greately. It was like night and day. She'd wake up exhausted and spend the day exhausted and then go sleep early and repeat next day. She would have mabye 2x more sleep than me and was more tired all the time.

However a regular blood test would rule Anemia out and after 20 years I would be surprised if Anemia itself was the problem. I am guessing Pernicious Anemia could be it, check for other kinds?

GrandMasterBirt··on Save My Life - help a fellow HN'er
Just FYI:

Test for Lyme Disease often goes wrong. Lyme Disease is very difficult to "catch" so the best thing is a test from many different parts of the body to different labs and if you suspect it, then test again a few times.

If you came out positive could mean you have a strain in you. After 20 years there is a possibility it is quite a strong strain. Thought it is a bit strange it should have crippled your nervous system by now.

GrandMasterBirt··on Facebook privacy issue: Google search reveals email addresses in Facebook
You are on to something here. A link that auto logs u out. Can we embed this link in a post on facebook, therefore auto logging people out just by visiting their wall? It would be the ultimate annoyance.
GrandMasterBirt··on Facebook privacy issue: Google search reveals email addresses in Facebook
It gets funnier... This poor sob just got their email revealed when i searched for

"Email Opt-Out | Facebook"

I can also disable facebook emails for them:

GrandMasterBirt··on I’m Starting to Hate Email
- I print emails, when they contain some information I will need while say driving somewhere.

- I use colors which help with Question / Answer situations.

- I use single letter sign offs when on a cellphone responding.

- I use some txt speach when on a cellphone, not too crazy because sometimes thinking of a clever abbreviation is more painful than just writing the damn word out, also autocomplete helps. I also explicitly tell people that "u" is ok or "ur" or "k" or something in that nature, but things I can't figure out within 20 seconds are not.

So yea, reply to shitty txt speach "I dont get it, please say again without abbreviations" it annoys because they have to send it twice.

Reply to a shitty colored email with a massively colored one.

Single letter signoffs... wait what bothers you about this?

GrandMasterBirt··on A Tale of Two Students
I find the following interesting:

Charter School:

Able to kick out students at will for things like possession of drugs, or violence. So you immediately know, no shit or you are out.

1-year renewable contract with teachers, so only good ones stay.

Ability to keep school student size relatively small.

Sounds like a real business. Maximize your efficiency. Get the best workers, ensure they are the best, and ensure the best results given your merchandise. Ok not quite 1:1 but close.

Now how to do this on a national level to ensure the best everywhere!!??! I guess the moral of this story that I got is that once the students were properly motivated the flourished, until then nothing good was happening. It is not just teaching, but sparking a curiosity of why they should want to learn.

GrandMasterBirt··on Parsing file uploads at 500 mb/s with node.js
If I can get a revenue stream of approximately $1000 a month my entire website will be literally a call to a few different web services and some fancy-shmancy CSS files. God I love hacker news! Ok fine there will be some of my code in there, hopefully not for long because soon there will be a tool to solve any other problem as well :P As long as these don't get too pricey.
GrandMasterBirt··on How We Improved Our Conversion Rate by 72%
Thanks for the info.

Question though, how do you get these measurements? Out of X people who visit the website who don't log on, how many will sign up vs not?

GrandMasterBirt··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully developed a large GWT application?
Why not? If they paying you to train in it, there is nothing wrong with GWT. It might not be the best framework to do things in, or it might be, but the learning experience alone might be worth it. You can easily transfer those skills to Java Swing development and Adobe Flex.

So doet!

GrandMasterBirt··on Obviously, HP Thinks We Are Stupid
When working in a cellphone store, we used to make more money on the shitty Nokia 8830 phones because they cost us 70 bucks to buy, sell em for free with a $250 spiff. Thats more money than selling a phone for 100 bucks where usually the phone price is $300 - $250 spiff + $50 profit.

Don't forget, when signing up for a contract they also charge you for line activation ($35) so they recoup their price rather quickly. About 5 years ago the standard contract was 1 year. Now 2 year minimum.

Verizon does a "contract-less" deal where you get the SAME plan without a contract. But you have to buy the phone full price... Think about it. That deal is 100x better for verizon. All the profit, none of the cost. And it gets even better!!!!!!! Thats right, verizon phones are USELESS ANYWHERE ELSE. Basically use V phones for V, or throw them out. So DUH its just as good as a contract.

I've yet to meet 1 person who realizes this.

The only "deal" is at 22 months of the 24 month contract, the company will allow you to renew the contract without any activation costs for a 24 month extension starting at the 22 month period (or when u called) and they apply the full "discount". This is perhaps the only place where you get a deal. You may say "but ur in a contract" in the united states there are no real capabilities to take a phone and switch carriers, only in europe does this capability exist (hence the GSM movement).

GrandMasterBirt··on The quintessential rational mind: Buddha
I am sorry I have to 1-up that.

Spiritual text has a "goal" in mind. The text is then written very vaguely so that most text is open to interpretation. In the end people seem to make each scripture of any sort apply to current everyday life, even with new evolving views on life, society, new technologies, etc.

GrandMasterBirt··on The latest version of the LittleDog robot
This argument is moot.

As long as humanity will want to kill eachother, everything will be used as weapons. Computers are used as weapons (hell would computerized bombs and missiles be possible otherwise?) boats are used to kill people. Airplanes used to kill people. So now robots, why not its the next step. Knowing the US government they will manufature them without any bit of encryption and with a radioshack remote control someone can hijack one of these :P

GrandMasterBirt··on F-Secure Stopped Facebook Worm With A Phone Call
Good proof of concept, if its spreading like wildfire it means that... guess what... we got a good new medium to spread malware.
GrandMasterBirt··on Lightspark: LLVM-based Flash Player for Linux
Who knows, what about V8? Maybe V8 is better, on that note would be interesting if browsers exposed their JS engine to Flash so that any browser improvements to javascript would also improve flash performance, instead of duplicating effort and having adobe do crap with actionscript it all just runs on one engine and vuala.

Pipe dream or reality?

Look, it is true that Ruby is not fast like other languages. But the goal is to focus on algorithms, prototyping, delivery, working. Get that going and you make money because you have a product. Afterwards you can translate to Java or whatever when you have the money.

I don't love ruby because of lack of generics in Java. Or lambdas (though that would help in java).

In any case... I say don't ignore it, but keep an eye out for changes in the community. When the Ruby community shifts to another language, thats when Ruby dies.

GrandMasterBirt··on A game written entirely in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript without using canvas
Great. You got me fired for playing. I blame you.

:)

Addictive. Still needs some help from frame-rate awareness. When a "slowdown" occures the game needs to be aware of it's processing slowdown and slow down the game fps to compensate otherwise things "jump".

GrandMasterBirt··on A game written entirely in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript without using canvas
Nice. However from a further vision perspective, canvas might wind up gaining 3d hardware support. Or it won't matter. idk.
GrandMasterBirt··on Why Diaspora will fail
1) It will only succeed if it integrates into shit like facebook. (as in can pull friends from there)

2) It will only succeed if setting it up is only a tiny bit more difficult than facebook.

3) It will only succeed if a hosting service provides basic plans for say 300M of storage of an automatically set-up account. The idea is its as easy as facebook BUT you own an encrypted account instance which can't be used by the hosting service. The service makes money by people investing 1-10 bucks a month for their super awesome more space service.

I cannot imagine it ever succeeding if these conditions are not met. (1) is an uphill battle, (2) possible, (3) idk what the cost possibility is.

Maybe 1 is not so bad, but when FB started MySpace was not the size of facebook today, and it was sort-of crap. Will people be willing to just leave facebook and their friends and stuff to go to this new service? Its like why people still use AIM today. AIM protocol ain't great, but if your friends are on there, you can't use google talk, because everyone you know is not there.

But yea the article is all about "kids cant succeed" and circular arguments.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why Diaspora will fail
Wow already jumping into implementation, the funding is not even over yet.

Honestly, I am assuming one goal will be to make it flexible. And a second goal and major dev effort (or maybe even a plea for help) will be to make it so a child can use it effectively.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why Diaspora will fail
Remember just as there are extremes of cons, there are extremes of pros.

The question is that is the average case worth the cons? Is the investment going to work out where they are held liable if they fail to deliver anything within x time? How can we dictate what is valuable and not deliveries.

With investors you know who you answer to. Here... not really. The risk is sort of both ways, but one of the two has been eliminated with the donation model.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why Diaspora will fail
It only takes one guy to play on that and steal millions. Yes not millions at a time, but pitch 20 ideas as different aliases and have 200k investments in each. Its not hard to appeal to desperation and mass fear.
GrandMasterBirt··on [dead]
Honestly the investigation is a bit bogus.

Also he is a public figure and a CEO you cannot expect the CEO to start ranting on random crap which could potentially poorly reflect on his company. Could be that his PR person told him not to.

Would you really expect a CEO of a billion-dollar company do put up pictures of himself getting totally wasted and drinking beer off the tits of some stripper they hired at a million dollar party? What about him posting his thoughts on Apple and his hatred of the iPad? That in itself could lead to bad blood between companies or investors, every word he writes publically must be cared for.

The only thing is... People should keep THAT in mind. Don't write everything as public. When you post it online, assume no amount of privacy settings will protect it. Hell assume that even your weird alias can be tracked down. Don't post it online if you don't want anyone you don't know or don't like to read it.

GrandMasterBirt··on 8-bit StarCraft
I remember that. I'm glad they ditched it. On a side note, once WC3 came out, the marine/firebat/zergling/hydralisk models made me thing SC2 was imminent on the WC3 engine. Guess they didn't, and just went for a new engine entirely.
GrandMasterBirt··on Rubinius 1.0 (Fabius) Released
Can't blame them, even a year or two ago Ruby and RoR were much inferior to today. And wait till RoR3 hits the shelves full steam. Granted I hope ActiveRecord3 will include everything by default like DataMapper does but whatever...

Ruby is still in infancy stages, Python is quite old. Hell Python was the inspiration for Ruby.

I mean look at what is happening in the Javascript space. If Ruby and JRuby implementations get really f-ing fast, we will get some major backings. The problem is that instead of improving Ruby, Twitter decided to ditch it. Maybe they really didn't have the people Google has when it comes to language builders. Since google app engine runs python it is in direct google interest to make it fast. Once it starts running ruby, vuala! So don't worry, they'll get to it.

GrandMasterBirt··on Rubinius 1.0 (Fabius) Released
Better question: What happens if companies like google start eyeballing it and putting some real money behind it.
GrandMasterBirt··on [dead]
What is shocking is not that DDG is gaining in popularity (I've been using it) but that AskJeeves still exists.
GrandMasterBirt··on Rubinius 1.0 (Fabius) Released
Cool. Is Rubinius faster than 1.8.6 or even 1.9? Was that the goal? Or is it just a 1.0 milestone where the project is compatible enough to meet the 1.8.6 ruby language spec and native libs?
