GrandMasterBirt··on If average salaries are 80-100k why does everyone keep getting 40-60k offers?
Ok:

a) Shitty jobs will offer shitty salaries

b) Employers who have shitty employees will feel a senior is worth 50k. Why? Because their "seniors" are juniors at best and are doing the recruiting.

c) Location. If they are the only game in town then guess what. The offers are obviously not from tech companies.

d) 100k is a mid-level position (at least in nyc). All depends on how well you do on the interview or how much you can show off of your work.

GrandMasterBirt··on Why the password "this is fun" is 10 times more secure than "J4fS!2"
That's not true and is horsecrap.

a) check length of password. Length < 6 = fail. Length < 10 = complexity requirement. Length < 15 = less complexity requirement. Length > 15 = secure.

b) ALWAYS do a dictionary lookup on the password. A dic lookup vs a dic attack is cheap. Hell the dic can be stored in memory in a hash map... even with misspellings, we don't even need to be 100% accurate either. Once you have that, basically check complexity: 1 word = no good. 2 words = ok, add a special character in there and a caps. 3 words = great. 3 words + special characters = awesome. etc.

Anyone can make one of these in a few hrs. and give error messages like:

"Your password is too short"

"your password is too simple for it's length, either make it longer or add special characters, numbers, and capitol letters"

"your password is made up of a single word or easily obtainable information about you based on information we have in our system, please change the words used or add more of them"

This means: (a) people understand why password is rejected and (b) people have choices and (c) increases probability that people won't forget their password.

Oh and any system that limits passwords to < 50 characters can fo fk themselves. Too bad ADP (paystub) has a policy of 6-12 characters. Thats right limitations, and I have to use that crap. Is a 4000 byte database column that expansive nowdays?

Furthermore... Changing password every 1-3-6 months is also bad. WHY? Simple, very very simple: 99% of the time you will have one of the following situations:

- The same password is used + an extra 1 or 2 characters.

- The same password is used + different capitalizations.

- A different password is used + post-it note.

- The user will forget their password immediately.

The TRUE answer to the reason why it policies are the way they are is because people don't want to think. "Tom did it this way, it must be secure." "I don't really understand it, so whatever, its the standard, it must work."

To make passwords secure they need to enact the policies I stated + a second factor for authentication. If you log in from an "unknown" location (a new one) just send them an email, or sms, or something that gives some key to enter to authorize. This will work in letting people know there is a breach, change pw on need, don't make ppl change passwords nonestop. Lots of advantages.

Wow writing this I feel like we need a startup that provides this exact solution. One question for the fellas who know more... how hard is it to spoof someone's ip without them knowing (internal network or external)

GrandMasterBirt··on Microsoft confirms IE10 won't run on Vista, millions of IE9 users shrug
Looks like MS is pushing hard for "upgrade to our latest os or DIE"... It's ok, their office will support windows 2k if it has to because its the big money maker. And people will leave IE behind soon enough.
GrandMasterBirt··on Rent the country of Liechtenstein for $70,000 a night with Airbnb
I'm in. Now we better be getting our money's worth! Now that I think about it. 1 day for a country for 70k is fine. Means we can throw one fucking helluva party!

GrandMasterBirt··on The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race
Most animals spend 100% of the time conserving energy or hunting (primates and children play excluded). They don't do leisure.

Evolution favors the plentiful. Some might say the most fit to survive the earth are the roaches. We can't kill them, all our techniques fail, nukes won't kill them, they live off the scraps of crap that humans don't even think creatures can live on.

Agriculture ensured that we have an ability to feed an increasing number of people. It also means that we can settle any area, and as long as crops grow there, or crops can be IMPORTED there humans can spread to that area. With that came technology for defending it from humans and predators. From an evolutionary perspective, agriculture is perfect.

GrandMasterBirt··on Apple Adds Do-Not-Track Tool to Safari
"No idea why Google wouldn’t be leading the way on this."

Because Google cares about making the best technology that thinks solely about the user and in no way acts in Google's interest? Possibly because its not high priority for them.

GrandMasterBirt··on IGDA about the Amazon Android Appstore: just say no.
Yes but the problem is when markets hijack business models. Like what apple did with in-app sales.
GrandMasterBirt··on Is Sugar Toxic?
This does not say "its not your fault" its more of "its not your fault for being ignorant to the harm of sugar, but its still up to you to watch what you eat".

Its like saying "its not your fault, smoking is addictive"... thats right, its addictive, and now that you know its killing you and has no benefit, you as a rational human being need to put yourself in a position where you can quit by destroying your cigs and forcing everyone you know to never permit you of smoking, and ensure you are not even if you try to hide it, and give you shit if they smell it, etc. there are ways, there is help, but its still the responsibility of the person no matter who's fault it is.

GrandMasterBirt··on Is Sugar Toxic?
Humans have a problem with those sort of issues. Furthermore when surrounded by pretty much everything sugar, its kind of hard to avoid. Imagine if we were to find out tomorrow that people who use facebook are 60% likely to die of a seizure caused directly by facebook within the next 50 years. And we find out by a vague hard to prove no direct correlation study. Would be pretty hard to convince everyone you know to stop using facebook. What if it's too late? Etc.
GrandMasterBirt··on A home phone line powered by Skype and ready for prime time
ummmmm... wtf? This sounds a lot like a setup of google voice. I create a GV account for my "home" phone which is forwarded to my cell phones. If only I had sprint cell service in my apartment. Works literally everywhere but there.

GrandMasterBirt··on IE10 platform preview available - with native HTML 5
Its so native to win vista/7 that it does not support windows xp which Opera/Firefox/Chrome ALL support WITH their performance improvements AND they've done so while staying ahead of IE9.

I guess if that's native, yes IE9 wins. I think in user's minds: if its built for MY operating system specifically its better than the other. However thats not true as even the tech unsavvy are flocking away from IE.

HOWEVER. I am glad to hear this news. It only means one thing. PROGRESS.

GrandMasterBirt··on Bing Now Powers 30% of US Searches
So first of all, the demographics may be at play here.

Second of all, if yahoo is "powered by bing" that basically means that bing in itself did not win anything, they just took an entire existing user base and replaced one engine with another. Its like if secretly all ford engines were replaced with toyota ones, and toyota claims to have gained market share. Its true technically, but on a user level its not users flocking to them, its just the fact of life that happened due to a takeover. Note yahoo allowed paying to get better rankings, so those who used it were already used to shit results.

GrandMasterBirt··on A Note about Freeware
I like this post. It is exactly right. This is sort-of like... Red Hat vs Cent OS. Cent OS is essentially the freeware version of red hat. Yes yes OSS bla bla bla. However, why are companies not pursuing cent? its free. Hell its orders of magnitude cheaper than RH.

The answer is "freeware". Cent is freeware. When you need THEIR support, its freeware. When you want a feature, its freeware. When you want someone to spend an hour looking through forums and give you an answer to your problem, its freeware. So many large companies see the value of getting Red Hat.

In the end freeware works just as well as OSS, adware, etc. Its just a different business model. In many cases it makes sense, in many its useless.

Heres an interesting one though. It strikes me by surprise. League of Legends uses a freemium business model. You play the game, earn IP to buy characters/runes. You can pay money to buy the characters faster. You can pay money to buy skins, which offer NO ADVANTAGE. So basically there is zero crippled functionality when not paying them, However they will plow through your money much faster than WoW ever would if you want to keep up with their very fast release of characters (1-2 per month) especially if you are a casual gamer. What would you call this model??? Is it still freemium? Maybe careware?

GrandMasterBirt··on New engine shakes up auto industry
Yes. However lets consider this: If it meets 80% of the population's 100% needs then its good enough for me. Imagine a ~60% or so reduction in co2 emissions world wide. Sure 20% of people still need their big trucks, but at least not everyone. Not to mention shaving 1000 pounds off the weight of the car not only gives fuel gains, but lowers power requirements to move that vehicle. Now I was going to say... take that, combine it with tesla's engine, and now you have potentially a long-range vehicle, a vehicle that can already do 300 miles on a charge and potentially a gas engine that can charge it up so you get a nice and unlimited mileage as long as you refuel.

Not to mention cheaper cars!!!!!

Well, at least its functional.
GrandMasterBirt··on The dropbox endgame
I in a way agree with the OP however I think we are decades away from the proposed future. The problem is multi-tiered

- If you are outside of a major city, chances are you don't have internet wireless coverage everywhere. In fact many places in the city face this issue. This is more of a physics issue than anything. Inside my office building I get fairly bad coverage. Don't forget tunnels and such. My apartment has ZERO coverage. Only my wifi. And not all apartments I visit have wifi or coverage.

- Price and transfer rate. Sending my hard drive to dropbox is about $50 a month (or more) and not to mention taking about a month to actually upload.

- I don't want to rely on a company like Dropbox to exist. If they fail (see delicious) I don't want to be stuck with nothing. In fact single points of failure are bad. And I don't mean Dropbox can have a hard drive failure, I mean what if DB decides to triple their price.

- America's internet infrastructure kinda sucks with current insanity pushed by isps regarding data caps/etc. Just wait till people REALLY put our infrastructure to the test.

Seriously, invest into a second wire going overhead. Perhaps a third going a slightly different rout just incase.

GrandMasterBirt··on Chinese Infinite Magical Hard-Drive
+1 to the try-before-you-buy mentality. Will keep this in mind.
GrandMasterBirt··on Chinese Infinite Magical Hard-Drive
I don't think that's a viable strategy for people who rip people off.

Also I'm sure this was a day's worth of work for one dude, and super cheap production. You can't build real hardware on those terms.

GrandMasterBirt··on [dead]
The only thing about this whole situation is that what if a company is based in the US? Does it mean that the company is now ip-blocked from france if they don't conform?

Problem with non-international laws is like the US State dissallowing adult content to be served to minors, that becomes a world-wide law not only localized. Hence why the internet needs an international governing body to truly control because it is global, a concept never before seen in history.

GrandMasterBirt··on Firefox Add-ons with the Slowest Start-up
Ironically Fasterfox is one of those problems.

I am annoyed by the slow startup time of FF, but since it mostly stays open all day long I can deal. I think the adblocking that firefox has is superior since it can prevent content from being downloaded, that alone is worth it. Firebug + FireSass + FireQuery are some tools I can't live without. Chrome has yet to match the features. Sure some keybindings are not as great, but overall a better tool is a better tool.

GrandMasterBirt··on How to damage your brand in one smooth shot - Way to GoDaddy
1) Read the OP 2) He could have donated money he spent on the expedition to feed that village. 3) He could have relocated the elephants. They are called tranqs, it won't take one, but it'll take a few and get the elephant down.

This is just an excuse for a rich person to brag about killing an endangered specie with a gun. OOOO SKILL. If he did it with his bare hands, then I would applaud.

GrandMasterBirt··on Finally, an android experience that rivals the iPone.
android market?
GrandMasterBirt··on Finally, an android experience that rivals the iPone.
Its not a paint job. They do a poor job letting you know what features are the awesome ones. It pretty much makes the android launcher extremely user friendly. Try it out. Uninstalling apps, hiding stuff in app drawer. Folders that are more useful than standard stuff. Great performance compared to other launchers.

Its a skin as much as ADW is a skin, except its better than ADW. Their contact/dialer app is amazing, startup time is damn good compared to good dialer apps like dialer one (except dialer one does not integrate well with htc's missed call notif). Weekly updates with usually good stability improvements.

GrandMasterBirt··on Finally, an android experience that rivals the iPone.
I've been using the GO Launcher/GO Dialer for a week now, and every fucking bit of frustration I had with android os just dissappeared. If I'd ever through "it would be awesome if android did..." that feature is in this launcher. Its not the big features, its every single little feature put together with great performance, stability, weekly updates, immediate bug fixes and quick customer feedback.

Hell it even has the perfect replacement to a task killer application integrated flawlessly into the launcher in the running tab of the app drawer. Oh and the skins are pretty awesome.

This this is amazing, I only hope these guys get more noticed!!!

GrandMasterBirt··on Google Inadvertently Classifies Google Places As A “Content Farm”
Good for anti-competitive claims MS makes. Google claims each department tries to independently make the best product available and no favors are given to google products. This is a perfect example that google's content spam does not care if the spam comes from within google.

Also gives me lots of confidence in their webspam team.
