Grakel··on Mark Zuckerberg Sells Stock Every Day as Billionaires Cash Out
Bloomberg has got to be kidding with the three popups all blocking each other. Can't read this.
Grakel··on Unbreakable phone screens could be made with a new material
Sufficient thinness was reached like ten years ago. Imagine the battery life we could have.
Grakel··on Amazon still isn't doing enough to stop bait-and-switch reviews
I once got a fake Colgate toothpaste. The printing was weird and it was liquidy, and half full.
Grakel··on Amazon still isn't doing enough to stop bait-and-switch reviews
I bought a Kershaw Leek from the Kershaw store on Amazon last month. I received a knife that was clearly used, it was dull, dirty, and scratched.
Grakel··on My first virtual reality groping
Should be easy enough to track hand proximity to sensitive areas and issue an auto ban. Hopefully permanent.
Grakel··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
Yep, and Google will fail to foresee practical needs and cancel the project in less than five years.
Grakel··on Bank of America execs warn junior staffers to ‘dress down’ as NYC crime surges
But at least we're not under a Republican mayor and all those racist policing policies that... completely cleaned up the city.
Grakel··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
37.5, which is 75 percent of half, I would say "nearly" half puts the education of the people very close to average.
Grakel··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
My favorite fake statistic in this article is "and nearly half have a college degree." They're trying to frame that paragraph to say the people are educated, and if you read it quickly it comes off that way, instead of "most of these people only have a high school diploma."
Grakel··on The Economics of Broadway Shows
Hamilton was workshopped for a very long time and then had a long Off Broadway run at The Public Theatre where additional changes were made. A huge amount of money went into it because of the trust that Lin Manuel had generated with previous work.

Spiderman was in tech for over a year (beta testing) because the damned flying didn't work. Then they radically changed the script because it hadn't been workshopped, and it was still terrible.

I would encourage you to work on a theatrical production some time. I think you'll find a lot of familiar difficulties, including insane schedules, incompetent management, project bloat, abuse and burnout.

Grakel··on Towering musical theater master Stephen Sondheim dies at 91
When someone's still alive, it always sounds a little weird to say they're the greatest of all time.

But among those who care, there will be those who were alive when Steven Sondheim lived, and those who came after.

What an incomparable writer, for his ability to write simple, clear, clever songs that cut to the bone.

Grakel··on Science Fiction Books Everyone Should Read
I found Dune hard to get into, although I loved the film.

But I think we're getting into just differences of opinion, so firm handshakes all around.

I'm glad there's more out there to read every day!

Grakel··on Science Fiction Books Everyone Should Read
Strange list- almost totally made up of weird, unapproachable stuff, and then also Andy Weir and Ted Chiang.

I'm not knocking it, but these are edge case titles, certainly not what I would say everyone should read. Except Ted, who's maybe the best living short story writer.

Grakel··on Shopping Malls Thrive in the Age of Online Retail
It's great to say they're 100% occupied, but it's very unclear by what. The example given is that the second floor of the former Nordstrom is now a vaccine clinic. So how does income compare?
Grakel··on Los Angeles is gearing up to ban wood-frame construction
So they're banning structures made of 100% biodegradable material that offsets carbon as it grows and is planted exclusively for this purpose, in favor of concrete and steel? Interesting.
Grakel··on Wolves make roadways safer
We do put money and effort into protecting them just because.

But committees sit around and think, "here's a way we can further justify and generate some press."

How much human effort is wasted by group politics and general shrugging?

Grakel··on [dead]
These keep getting flagged.
Grakel··on [dead]
Clear case of self defense. Glad to see the system working.
Grakel··on Jamie Hyneman Appointed Professor of Practice at LUT University
In my field professor of practice means you have to a bunch of crap work for the department and you're not getting tenure or seniority.
Grakel··on [dead]
The article brings up the massive amount of immigrants Russia is pushing at Poland through Belarus, but says that is believed to be unrelated. Well it wouldn't be so unrelated if either those migrants get the idea to flee back toward Russia, or if Poland decided to push into Belarus, however unlikely that may be.
Grakel··on [dead]
Even allies conduct espionage against each other. One of the major activities is gaining or creating blackmail material in order to influence policy. Do this enough, and you can essentially control a country, even one as powerful as the US.
Grakel··on Scattered thoughts on why I waste my own time
This is nuts. Hacker News keeps me thinking about smart people's opinions about everything that's going on today. He wishes he was playing chess instead, a fun game, but one that is more a competition of raw processing power and memorization than anything having to do with the human experience.
Grakel··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
RTF comment. He found the count informative, as do many people.
Grakel··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
Its very hard to get contractors to work with materials today. So you can have some factory create panels of steel and glass, and the contractor can have (relatively) unskilled cheap labor snap them into place. That's a lot of construction today.

Some really beautiful structures do use minimalism, but so many big architects today strive for speed, size, and function. I think most modern beautiful, minimalist structures are usually smaller, built for fewer people, etc. Maybe?

Grakel··on 18-Button Open Office Mouse Makes a Keyboard Look Minimal (2009)
They say a camel is a horse designed by committee. Great features, but ugly, slow, and mean.
Grakel··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
This misses a big point: highly skilled craftsmanship will never again be affordable on an architectural scale. So we'll have it again when it can all be done by machine.

It costs human lives to build a Notre Dame, both in deaths and in total lifespan output, and as for Sagrada Familia it's still not complete. We now value human life and labor too much to be able to afford it.

I personally can't wait to have detailed, warm, organic architecture back again, but I damn sure don't want to carve any stone.

Grakel··on Consumers cut back as some meat products up 40%
You're correct, that's why I posted it. Who are you addressing in your comment? Thanks.
Grakel··on A city within a city in Kyiv, whose design was inspired by Legos
"Help, help, I'm being oppressed!"
Grakel··on A city within a city in Kyiv, whose design was inspired by Legos
Yeah, it's gaudy. If you want cheery that everyone agrees on except architects and city planners, you go with detailed neoclassical-ish brick buildings. Beautiful, homey, charming, relaxing. Natural materials and colors with time tested shapes. There's not a person in the world who sees a picture of Edinburgh and doesn't say aww. But it's expensive, so screw it!
Grakel··on Star System with Right-Angled Planets Surprises Astronomers
I'm just complaining about "right angled planets." Sounds like a Tetris piece orbiting a star.
