Goosey··on Facebook using tagged photos for authentication
Considering the data is already there at the point of authentication I think this is a great and innovative idea. Infinitely better than 'What is your mother's maiden name?' type questions.
Goosey··on Monads in Python, with nice syntax
Maybe I am just not understanding the true purpose of Monads. I thought they were a mathematic construct which (for lack of a better word, pardon my ignorance) allows Haskell to 'cheat' some imperativeness into it's otherwise purely functional garden of eden. Given that Python is a an imperative language to begin with, what is this trying to solve?

Not trolling here. Just curious.

Goosey··on NoSQL, Heroku, and You
I was thinking the same thing. I would kill for a detailed analysis of the benefits and trade-offs between the widely different database solutions callously thrown into the single moniker of 'NoSQL'. Heaven knows such articles are/were frequent when comparing various SQL database engines.
Goosey··on The absolute bare minimum every programmer should know about regular expressions
I can only hope this challenge inspires a spiteful hacker to create a full grammar parser in a regular expression. It won't be me, but I love how these types of comments can sometimes spawn the most interesting toy projects. :)
Goosey··on Script type="text/python"
It is a bold first step. I sincerely hope Microsoft includes this functionality standard in the next release of IE. It would be refreshing to see them pushing innovation on the browser front.

I can see Firefox following suite. Just embed CPython and route it through that; given that they are struggling to match the Javascript performance of V8 it seems they might welcome a free diversion.

Chrome following suite is more questionable. V8 is the current king of the ring in JS performance, but Google is widely known to be a supporter of Python. I can imagine them amiable to the idea of unifying their server side glue with the client. Besides; they have shown time and time again to make 'strategically strange' moves in order to help advance the general state of the internet. When it comes to google if the internet wins, they win.

Opera would be wise to support it as a differentiating feature. They need all the tricks they can pull to stay relevant.

The bugaboo to me is Apple. They have Nitro, which is right up with V8 in most benchmarks, and support for languages which have benevolent dictators living in their enemy's quarters doesn't sound like an Appleish thing to do. I doubt they would peacefully hand over any control.

Of course if we do stumble into a multi-client-side-language-choice Renaissance it will be Adobe with the most to lose.

Goosey··on Multi-core HTTP Server with Node.js
Multiprocess is going to be more robust against failures, for one. While it is a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, I thought Chrome had shown pretty conclusively the benefits of adoption multi-process over multi-threaded
Goosey··on Microsoft changed IronPython, IronRuby and DLR licenses to Apache 2
I recall a video of the IronPython team talking about VS2010 support where they mentioned they would be changing the license for GPLv3-compatible. Considering how great this tiny little open source loving team buried deep in the bowels of microsoft have been so far I am willing to trust that is the main reason, not PR.
Goosey··on Optimizely (YC W10) Makes It Remarkably Easy to A/B Test
There are many names for this. Fad/Fashion/Trend.

And I don't think the phenomenon is a negative one. Just as clothing fashion changes so does naming fashion. For some reason we feel that names should have a timelessness to them, but clothing should not? Both exist to engage humans on an emotional level and human engagement will change over time due to exposure to the current trend.

IMHO Rebranding long lived companies > Stressing out about finding a 'timeless' brand. Optimizing your brand must take temporal concerns into account.

Goosey··on Show HN: HackerNewsers, com, find other hackers near you
I think this adds on nicely to hackrtrackr which appears to only be useful for geo-locating yc-readers. This looks to be built much more to satisfy that "community of people who can pick each other's brains" need.

A more blunt assessment.. Hackrtrackr is a toy that isn't that useful, this has the potential to seriously improve the lives of many people here.

Goosey··on Comments now cost 99 cents and your name.
I think this will work out great for them. Somethingawful.com is one example of a site which has a pay-barrier to it's forums primarily for the reason to keeping out trolls. Now you may have mixed opinions over the nature of things discussed in the forums there, but the maturity of the discourse is pretty impressive for the size of the audience. The fact that so much of the topic matter is 'immature' only helps exemplify how effective the system is.
Goosey··on GNOME 3: The Future of the Desktop
Anyone else find this article really useless without being able to see the screen shots in higher resolution? I am interested in the UI improvements, but I won't be told about them. SHOW me.
Goosey··on Great programming quotes
The irritating thing about that argument is it comes with the built-in implication that you already know something else (Windows/OSX/whatever). It is basically complaining about learning-curve, right?

The other irritating thing is it usually 'means' general computer usage, but as hackers we need to choose OS's for things like server deployments, development environments, etc. In my experience when you start mixing in enough complex/worthwhile applications of the OS it becomes a wash in time consumption between *nix/Windows (since you are using the bulk of your time learning application-level things)

So if your doing something 'worthwhile' might as well go with the option that only costs 1 of the assets rather than three (time, money, and freedom)

Goosey··on Why has no-one brought back a JuicyCampus clone?
Philosophically I am with you, but the site design seems to make it feel 'dirty' to me. I really wish it broadcast the ideals your blog post is rather than broadcasting a cockroach and dirt.

I am curious what kind of features exist to combat slander (and what features exist to keep those features in check against honest, but negative, feedback)?

Goosey··on Razor Burn: A Flood of Fancy Shavers Leaves Some Men Feeling Nicked
You are right on the money. It all comes down to the best shave for YOU. It's worth experimenting. After all if you are going for clean-shaven you are going to be shaving about once per day. 365 times per year. Thousands of times before you die. It is worth optimizing this to be as pleasant as possible.

I can absolutely respect people who prefer the 'classic' old straight edge shaves, or the dollar store single blades, or the ultra-manly outback shave with a friggen knife.. I have actually tried all of the above (the knife was a mistake!)

Now I found my personal golden sheep; I got a free one of the new Shtick Hydro's and it is bar none the best shave I have ever had. The first time I used it I was actually startled. It didn't FEEL like I was shaving, just like I was rubbing something smooth over my face and the hair was suddenly gone.

I think a lot of the backlash against the pushing of newer shaving products is legitimate (prices of blades going up.. how many blades do we really need? ergonomic grip? Really?), but I think a large part is also some sort of machismo. Having a really 'fancy' smooth shave just isn't as manly.

Personally I am not shaving for the man-points. I am shaving for utility and comfort.

EDIT: full setup, shave while shower is running so I am in a steamy room, I use shaving gel (the Gillette sensitive skin), and I make sure I change the blade every two weeks. Follow up with the shower and some post-shave lotion after toweling off.

Goosey··on How much is Facebook Connect limiting Quora's growth?
I love seeing facebook connect buttons because it means I will be logging into a site without touching my keyboard. This is a big win for when I am on the couch.
Goosey··on 1000Memories: A Loved One Has Passed Away. What’s Your Digital Strategy?
" We make idols of celebrities in our generation but what of the past generation or two." Consider the insane amount of people who are considered extremely influential in their respective fields/disciplines/arts only AFTER they pass away. I don't know if that is a trend that will continue into the future, but I certainly hope so.
Goosey··on Dan Ariely on why online dating is so unsatisfying
Off the cuff solution: Require accounts be tied to a real identity (provide driver's license #?.. No I haven't thought about legal/privacy repercussions) and introduce a post-date rating system. Sprinkle in some sort of staleness algorithm along with an anti-maliciousness algorithm (IE: someone who always rates their dates as creeps might themselves be a nutjob) and perhaps the system can survive.

Off the cuff so tear this to pieces. Perhaps I just WANT the idea to work so well that I am not seeing the forest through the trees.

Goosey··on Clojure's edge on Node.js
Strangely enough this post has caused me to decide to give D another wag.
Goosey··on Dan Ariely on why online dating is so unsatisfying
This blind date idea is really what interests me. I think profiles create two issues beyond the ones you already pointed out. I am pulling these examples from my experience on OkCupid.

1 - People don't give fully honest answers to personality questions. Instead it seems people craft a personality they think will either get them the most results or get the the specific results they are looking for. So not only the profile, but also the questions become gamed due to the 'aggressive filtering' people do.

2 - People spend obsessive amounts of time crafting their profile, which actually gets read, and very little time answering personality questions, which don't. Assuming the personality question formula is more reliable for matching than making decisions based on someone's profile writing skills, this reverses the emphasis.

I think a basic system like OkCupid's could work for matching. I like the way you both give your answer and you give the answer you want your mate to have. It's intuitive and allows for complex dynamics like a submissive person seeking a dominant person. But the profile viewing/filtering gets in the way of the legitimacy. If it was a blind-date popcorn machine I think it would work a lot better (and be a lot more fun!)

Goosey··on Flattr, and Why It's Brilliant
Hopefully it will reach a critical mass sufficient to allow sites to REQUIRE a flattr account to see their content. Note that this is different from requiring a subscription, since you aren't forced into donating to them. But you are forced into jumping into the 'donation scheme' so if they produce content you like, why not click it?

I'm not sure what kind of critical mass that would require though. I think in some niche areas it would be possible without much effort if there was some sort of banding together among the major content producers for that niche.

Goosey··on Ask HN: What's your most interesting life goal currently?
Mine too, along with the infamous (at least among my friends) quote: "NO ONE Hacks the Gibson!"
Goosey··on 11% conversion rate increase from a "Commitment Checkbox"
"This checkbox alone, with that particular title, helped increase their successful application conversion rate by over 11% – an increase of hundreds more applications a month!"

Sounds like it is off the application page, but if the wording is to be believed this is a net increase.

Goosey··on Ask HN: Managing my own server.
I second this! I wrote a post ( http://goosey.posterous.com/the-good-news-is-you-dont-have-t... ) recently about this development strategy. It has many advantages beyond the "you don't have to worry about hosing your laptop" one, for sure!
Goosey··on LinkedIn: Is it A Strategic Error?
It is for this very reason that I update my profile regularly, even if insignificant ways. I actually have a Google Calendar to remind me to do it twice a month.

This can be great for your career.

If you don't work for a itty bitty startup you can count on someone above you in the org chart catching wind of every LinkedIn update you make. I have been asked about my frequent updates twice at my current job; the second time they were so concerned that I was looking around for a new position (and I had just taken a crucial role in a new project) that they offered me an unasked-for performance bonus following the completion of the project. It totally floored me.

Goosey··on Vows - Asynchronous BDD Framework for Node.js
There must be something wrong with my brain in that the design of the page and the framework make me finally want to really give node.js a try.

I find this happens to me a lot. Anyone else find themselves picking their 'meats' based on the available 'spices'?

Goosey··on New service cleans up whiteboard pics with an email
Really great idea, but most advanced whiteboard cleanup software includes perspective correction and things like that.. As far as I can tell this just is a color-scale modifier and sharpener.

However the idea behind the service, whiteboard cleanup via email, is pretty sound. I would love to have this with features that allow me to send the pic along with list of 'end product' recipients.

Need some https secured site as well for sensitive whiteboard snaps.

Goosey··on Release yourself to the church, to the state, to Apple Corporation. Or Flow.
I have read Flow twice in the last few years and while I considered it an important work that has shaped my perspective of personal psychology immensely I never understood Flow on a logical level. For me the 'idea' of flow made sense, but I wasn't able to follow the cause-and-effect that made it work.

In other words I accepted the correctness of Flow at a faith-based level rather than at an logic-based level.

In these two sentences, Flow now 'clicks' for me at that logical level: "So complete absorption leads to flow, that great feeling, because all your resources are dedicated to it: the task is precisely challenging enough to engage all of your resources, and nothing more. Since all of your resources are engaged in the task at hand, you no longer feel self-conscious because there’s no “bit” available to mull over your ego or self-image."

This post is not perfect and does contain a bit of speculative wandering, as others have pointed out, but for finally making the circuits of my brain comprehend Flow at a deeper level.. Thank You!

Don't stop writing.
