Goopplesoft··on App Container and Docker
> just do it in your own project and let the best project win > Bullshit. If it's open, let the best idea win.

So are you suggesting docker should merge and maintain support for a container spec they weren't involved with which, was created because docker is "fundamentally flawed"?

I'm sure the pull-request author knew that this would do nothing more than cause fuss in the community. Shykes comment seems to me like it was a response to what seems like a hardly legitimate PR and much like a PR stunt.

Docker has 722 contributors on github, I'm sure the community will discuss and decide what to do with this while I watch this battle play out and work with both products.

Shykes latest comment on that github thread has a point: https://github.com/docker/docker/pull/10776#issuecomment-743...

Interesting move by CoreOS here to create what will likely be a false dichotomy for docker in the public sphere (as an indicator of their openness). If you truly believe docker is fundamentally flawed you'd be doing your users a disservice writing this. If its transitionary, create your own docker fork/binary instead of a public scene to try to force dockers hand. Lots of fragmentation to come, which sucks because the ecosystem is so important.

Goopplesoft··on Why are free proxies free? (2013)
> extra piece of code that does things like send all data entered in forms to your server

Assuming you're injecting JS, the site isn't SSL meaning all that data is available to the proxy anyway (its part of their operation). The botnet angle is much more interesting than the loss of privacy one.

Goopplesoft··on Why are free proxies free? (2013)
Most do actually, most links on html are changed so that you continue using the proxy, JS is often removed, etc.

Goopplesoft··on Mochi – Dynamically-typed language for functional and actor-style programming
It's written and supports python fully (see flask snippet and source). The code was definitely an interesting read. Really cool and well done OP.

My only gripe is that unfortunately the reverse isn't true (you can't 'mochi' in python). I wonder how much could be achieved with a 'Dynamic functional programming for humans' type thing that stays pure python.

Goopplesoft··on Interface Upgrades in Go
That second one is damn interesting, didn't know you could do that. Thanks!
Goopplesoft··on Interface Upgrades in Go
It seemed to me that interfaces have a second function of providing partial uniformity across types (not just abstracting procedures). I.e the Animal interface has a method `Speak() string` and you have a function that takes an Animal that prints something like "Animal type {species} says {speak}" you would have to define a getter on the Animal's species even though its not a really a procedure. But I see what you mean though. Thanks!
Goopplesoft··on Interface Upgrades in Go
Go's interfaces are great, but one of my annoyances is that you can't define an interface with values (methods only). Which makes little sense considering it works just fine with getters and setters. i.e:

    type Blah interface { Var string }
wont work, but

    type Blah interface { GetVar() string }
does. I'm sure theres a reason for this. Can someone shed some light?
Goopplesoft··on Announcing Docker Machine, Swarm, and Compose for Orchestrating Distributed Apps
Docker push/pull only do the layers that arent already available. What we did was create a base image that has docker + our main base image (ubuntu + the packages we want) and then we ship builds on top of the base image which won't be pulled down again. Code builds are like 30mb shipped (pretty much just the code). Note you need your own registry for this.

Also familiarity with how union FSes work and using 'docker history' to trim container size makes it a lot easier.

Goopplesoft··on Announcing Docker Machine, Swarm, and Compose for Orchestrating Distributed Apps
> I felt like in the beginning I could rely on Docker being focused on containers

This whole "wheres docker going" thing is getting blown way out of proportion. Docker Swarm was built by ONLY 2 people on the docker team (https://github.com/docker/swarm/) and they are totally separate binaries. Thats like saying I cant use Google X anymore because Google is building Google Y...

Some of these considerations are valid (vendor lockin, etc), but they've been valid for a long time. Nothing changed today or the day rocket was launched.

Disclaimer: I like docker but I have no horse in this race, my only affiliation is using docker.

Goopplesoft··on Microsoft Azure Outage
It was one region, multiple availability zones. You're right Multi-AZ != Multi-region (for things like Sandy and natural disasters) BUT they have mostly separate infra which does make multi-az failures very unlikely. Due to its simplicity (with VPC and stuff) some people (perhaps wrongly) treat multi-az like multi-region.

Great work! I was exploring the distributed docker networking space yesterday for an open source project I'm working on (https://github.com/pnegahdar/sporedock) and the ones I have currently found are:

Weave - https://github.com/zettio/weave

Ambassadord - https://github.com/progrium/ambassadord

Warmhole - https://github.com/vishvananda/wormhole

QTunnel (not docker specific) - https://github.com/getqujing/qtunnel

Flannel - https://github.com/coreos/flannel

I'd love a comparison write up if you guys ever get to it.

Goopplesoft··on How long do GUIDs really need to be?
Its an infinitesimally small chance. You'd need a mac collision, must be generated at the same time, and a uuid collision. Even at the largest scales (Google et all) the probability of that happening is effectively 0.
Goopplesoft··on How long do GUIDs really need to be?
Actually it can. As long as they aren't randomly generated. UUID4s are random, lots of them including the mongodb use a timestamp/mac address as the first n bits of the guid. Not sure whether they have "no chance of collisions" but it is very possible.

I think 2 posts above is referring to this: http://money.cnn.com/2014/10/02/technology/security/google-a...

20 seconds in he says approximately: "Besides the fact that we show ads in gmail which we've done for over a decade and used the information for nothing". Now that I listen again it seems like an interesting play on words that makes it very unclear what he means.

Goopplesoft··on Fig 1.0: Boot2docker compatibility and more
It links docker containers for local dev environments. You can launch a project with say a webapp, a cache like redis, and a db like mysql with the comamnd 'fig up'. The 3 docker containers in this case are linked via a fig.yml that defines the setup. It also attaches your local development code so realtime changes propgate through the cotainer (e.g live server reloads)

Getting a new dev onboarded with your whole dockerized stack involves:

- pip install fig

- cd into directory with fig.yml

-'fig up'

Really a great tool. Definitely recommend it. Good intro here: http://www.fig.sh/

Goopplesoft··on Route leak incident on October 2, 2014
I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out why GAuthify had brief downtime and do a post-mortem. Luckily I'm read most CF blog posts here on HN and saw this. Is Cloudflare planning on having any real-time notification system for things like this? I'm sure it'll save a lot of headache trying to figure out what happened especially if you don't read the cloudflare blog.

Its very likely that I and especially the other non-hn folks could have missed this all together (checking cloudflare for an issue is likely my last check list item due to its amazing record).
