Gnewt··on "Buy Gold" vs. "Buy Bitcoin" on Google Trends
What was the event in April causing a spike in both searches?
Gnewt··on [dead]
Nothing strange was found, some guy just looked at a McNugget with a microscope and called it 'creepy'. Absolutely no science or evidence here.
Gnewt··on DreamObjects, an S3-compatible storage service for $0.04/GB
I wonder if this would be a good system for backups of Linux boxes? That's $.80/mo to store 20GB. Could be really cost effective doing differential backups.
Gnewt··on Android Bootstrap
Why would one implement this instead of using Android's builtin widgets? Android apps have always felt better to me when they use the UI recommended in the Android style guide.
Gnewt··on UK spies continue “quantum insert” attack via LinkedIn, Slashdot pages
Is this for users accessing sites like LinkedIn without HTTPS, or do you suppose that the NSA is signing trusted certs?
Gnewt··on Square talking to banks about possible 2014 IPO
Fully agreed. I just implemented Stripe to take payments for my consulting business online, and it's really nice. My only complaint is that Stripe takes a week to initiate a bank transfer, rather than Square's one business day.

I think right now there's a large difference in culture. Square is really hip and tries to avoid exposing 'nerd stuff' to their users, whereas Stripe focuses heavily on API examples etc. Seeing them combine but stay two different 'personas' could be beneficial for both.

Gnewt··on WebRTC Copy – OTR and fast file transfers over WebRTC
Are you hosting the site through Github Pages?
Gnewt··on Ask HN: Homebrew for Linux?
More power to them, but I'm not sure why they're doing this. Pretty much every package manager included in current distributions is more useful than Homebrew. Homebrew only exists to patch a package manager into a system that isn't built with one.
Gnewt··on Ghost Launches to The Public
You should respond to your emails ;)
Gnewt··on The myth of NASA's expensive space pens
Twist-Erase forever
Gnewt··on Requests v2.0 Python module released
Cool! Requests has got to be my favorite Python library. There are so many times I have replaced ~80 lines of urllib2 ugliness with 2-5 lines of requests. Simple, Pythonic, pretty...
Gnewt··on A Rally Against Mass Surveillance in Washington, DC
I don't really think that's a valid argument any more.
Gnewt··on I just caught Facebook giving Likes from the unwilling.
Slippery slope fallacy.
Gnewt··on Ask HN: Going the cloud way - Linode or DigitalOcean?
Linode is straightup incredible. I've been with them for about 5 years now. Almost every year they've given some sort of free upgrade -- I still pay the same amount I did 5 years ago and I now have something like 10x the bandwidth, a bit over 2x the storage, 2.8x the RAM, etc. AND faster processors. They're a company who seriously know their shit, and they're FAST.

The $20/mo base can be a bit much for some usages -- I still have a few $2-7/mo boxes from LowEndBox for various side projects, but for anything I really care about, I wouldn't put it anywhere but my Linode.

Gnewt··on Show HN: Web-controlled Christmas Lights with Node.js, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi
Yeah, that's the issue I initially foresaw. I didn't try it but I know enough about non-realtime-OSes that I know it would not have worked consistently. Even on the Arduino, sometimes you have to change the timing a bit -- it's not exact.

There _are_ RTOSes for the Raspberry Pi, but they may introduce their own problems. I don't mind having an Arduino or something smaller in there to handle the light stuff. Even if you want more control than the circular buffer implementation, it's incredibly simple to write a serial protocol to just individually address the bulbs.

If you wanted to minify it, you could have an ATMega on a PCB with just the necessary components to use as a 'shield' of sorts for the Raspberry Pi.

That's incredibly cool! Thanks for that. I think my next project will be implementing Cheer Lights functionality.
Gnewt··on Real Terminal, All Chrome
I am so, so tired of all this Koding spam. I've seen spam from multiple accounts (one of which was fka, who now admits to being a dev) on both HN and Reddit.
Gnewt··on Link your GitHub projects to cloud: Clone in Koding button
Someone by the same name ('fka') has been posting stuff about Koding today on r/programming as well as a few other nicks. To me it seems like a bunch of shills trying to promote this crap project.
