Glyptodon··on Meta Deployed AI and It Is Killing Our Agency
I tried signing up for Instagram once because for some reason there are a lot small businesses in artsy spaces (jewelry, etc.) who basically make it the main way to interact with them (or did) and I got banned almost instantly for no reason I could discern. Kind of gave up at that point (well, after trying to go through their "show an ID process" and it not working) and if I want to see some artist's insta I ask my wife. Don't care that much about the agency stuff, but their account management situation is indeed totally broken.
Glyptodon··on Facebook is cooked
It's interesting and very annoying. I use FB basically to follow a couple groups that I've followed for like 15 years and a couple family members. Most of what it shows me seems to be related to interests I have or anything I slow down for even 5 seconds to process. Like "slow down when scrolling to see if I really am seeing the insane thing I think" and it'll show me more. Sometime I report stuff. Like a real (I think) thirst trap holding up a sexual innuendo/come on with the writing reversed. But they never actually take action on anything I report no matter how fake, false, or innaproproate it is. I also routinely block everything it ever shows me with AI (photorealistic AI images of history with a chapter of writing seem common).

It's all a big joke of spam and scam.

...but engaging even slightly in a few specific topics or interests seems to make the worst of it go away for more of those topics.

Glyptodon··on 99% of adults over 40 have shoulder "abnormalities" on an MRI, study finds
I don't know what causes it, but even without major issues I think a lot of people continually loose range of motion in the shoulder as they age. So this doesn't surprise me.
Glyptodon··on Arizona Bill Requires Age Verification for All Apps
One thing to keep in mind is that every session has crazy proposals in AZ. (Not clear how many of them get anywhere.)
Glyptodon··on Can a Computer Science Student Be Taught to Design Hardware?
I have trouble believing there's a talent shortage in the chip industry. Lots of ECE grads I know never really found jobs and moved on to other things (including SWE). Others took major detours to eventually get jobs at places like Intel.
Glyptodon··on EU bans the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear
For some of these things I wonder if there are missing recyclable options. Like could you economically run a pile of defective clothing through a blender and and use it as fiber reinforcement in some kind of construction material or insulation?
Glyptodon··on Ask HN: Are you using an agent orchestrator to write code?
Completely agree. We need to get the DB into a container, which is somewhat easier said than done for a long-lived project that didn't do it initially.
Glyptodon··on Ask HN: Are you using an agent orchestrator to write code?
The stumbling block we have is spinning up separate environments for every agent so they have isolation for their branches. I think this is solveable, but we aren't trying to solve it ourselves. In practice it means we aren't doing a lot of agent supervision.
Glyptodon··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
Half the time my Mac doesn't show the resize cursor when in regions where it works to resize windows. It's annoying. But not quite the same issue as seen here.
Glyptodon··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
That's more so another example of a law that shouldn't exist.
Glyptodon··on How I estimate work
I agree with most of things on this article with and additional caveat: estimates are also a function of who is going to do the work. If I have a team of 5 offshore devs who need hand holding, 2 seniors who are very skilled, and two mid level or juniors, how long something will take, what directions will be given, and even the best approach to choose can vary wildly depending on which subset of the team is going to be working on it. On top of all the other problems with estimates. This variance has degrees, but particularly when there are high-skilled on shore engineers and low skilled offshore ones, it leads to problems, and companies will begin to make it worse as they get more cost sensitive without understanding that the different groups of engineers aren't perfectly fungible.
Glyptodon··on Downtown Denver's office vacancy rate grows to 38.2%
Denver does have some neighborhoods that almost are good in some of the respects you mention, or at least I remember some development that seemed similar in the vicinity of the Millennium Bridge - it's just insanely expensive (and I'm remembering pre-pandemic times).
Glyptodon··on Harvard legal scholars debate the state of the U.S. constitution (2025)
I think my question is "if it's failing does it mean it's broken?"
Glyptodon··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
That doesn't mean a different candidate wouldn't have had a better electoral map or more votes.
Glyptodon··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
I don't know, it seems like there has been a fair amount of reporting about closing or struggling SMBs and farms, and there's also the economy changing to make more and more of the spending come from upper income, which will be less price sensitive and the question of whether various things could have gone down in price otherwise.

The popular zeitgeist seems to reject the inflation numbers because of perceiving it to be higher, too.

I do agree it's probably not inventory, but the frequent changes to the policies may also be part of it too.

Glyptodon··on American importers and consumers bear the cost of 2025 tariffs: analysis
Much like I think if any Dem other than Hillary Clinton ran against Trump for his winning term 1, I think if the Dems had a proper primary process for this last election they'd probably have picked somebody who'd also have won.

That said, I'm not sure being a woman was worse than being from CA or black with a solid chunk of the electorate. (I'm reminded of how some of my own relatives seemed to want to avoid visiting us in CA growing up because they had such a strong notion of how "communist," "liberal," and dangerous it ostensibly was.)

In some ways this also illustrates that propaganda likely had a significant role, too, IMO.

Glyptodon··on Most renters shut out of energy-saving upgrades – study
Nobody has incentives or cashflow that will change this. At best if we built more housing it's something landlords might face competitive pressure over. In which case it might change. But currently cases where someone has a choice between two equivalent rentals and can try to pick the efficient one are pretty few and far between. Most people just try to balance as low of a monthly rent payment as possible with their commute and not having to rent from a slumlord type.
Glyptodon··on Ford F-150 Lightning outsold the Cybertruck and was then canceled for poor sales
I think if people who like trucks didn't see videos of things like the bumper ripping off when towing or minor failures leading to whole vehicle shorts it might have done better. The people who want trucks want resilience and ability to self-service more than the average car buyer.
Glyptodon··on I’m leaving Redis for SolidQueue
Ignoring how it works, there are a a solid handful of great features you get out of the box with Solid + Active Job that don't exist w/just using Sidekiq, even through the Active Job adapter.
Glyptodon··on No management needed: anti-patterns in early-stage engineering teams
As a former engineer at a YC startup from pre-A to post-B, I generally agree with much of this in a broad way if the startup is a technology first one with organic growth or hasn't really figured out product/market fit.

But I think some of the management and team stuff is much more complicated in B2B or B2B2C situations, regulated industries, or cases where there are substantial non-engineering employees, perhaps doing sales, onboarding, or things related to the "offline" world (if there are physical aspects to the business).

In particular, I don't think you can have a super flat eng structure run out of a few docs if eng needs to be working with one or more teams larger than the eng team itself unless there's some kind of separate interface to large outside teams.

If you end up with a significant sales team, account management team, support team, significant numbers of contractors, or other categories of workers because of the nature of the business, you will have to be more regimented about how things are structured. In companies that face this issue, it's often one of their major challenges and not avoidable compared to other kinds of startups - your sales team may have all kinds of ideas and some of them may even be good, and some may even want to sell them before you've built them. And if your sales team is 2x the size of product and engineering... it's not easy to run out of one document. (Note that I don't love or endorse this, but in certain kind of markets and products it seems like a bit of an unavoidable issue.)

Glyptodon··on I'm making a game engine based on dynamic signed distance fields (SDFs) [video]
Using layers with settings about which SDFs interact with which layers for operations seems interesting. Like put trees in a layer and then have an axe that can negatively deform the trees but not the ground layer or something. Or a predator layer that can absorb things in the prey layer. Haven't really thought through.
Glyptodon··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
I mean converting vacant is fine, to me it's the same category basically - increasing housing supply.
Glyptodon··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Just build more housing, the whole "let's make rules to avoid the easy and obvious solution" trend annoys me.
Glyptodon··on I wanted a camera that doesn't exist, so I built it
I think it's directly related to sensor size and given the shape of lenses (cylinders) that means bigger sensors should probably have a non linear relationship to lens size.Though it is probably not quite that simple. In any case, bigger lenses allow for smaller f stops with a given focal length, and people really do love bokeh...
Glyptodon··on I wanted a camera that doesn't exist, so I built it
I think people really underestimate how nice it is for the lenses to be smaller and not just for the camera to be.
Glyptodon··on I wanted a camera that doesn't exist, so I built it
I have a GX-8 and I still like it...
Glyptodon··on Anthropic: You can't change your Claude account email address
That was my first guess TBH. Mostly because it seems like the kind of thing scientists writing Python would do.
Glyptodon··on Anthropic: You can't change your Claude account email address
Maybe they should read that article (that was on HN) from the other day and switch to using account numbers with no customer information since that'd be about the same difference anyway given this behavior.
Glyptodon··on Log level 'error' should mean that something needs to be fixed
I agree errors should be errors. Many things that are logged for other reasons should use a different label.

That said, the thing I've cone find being useful as a subcategory of error are errors due to data problems vs errors due to other issues.

Glyptodon··on U.S. unemployment rose in November despite job gains
If you look at HN who is hiring threads sometimes the same companies post every time for very extended periods of time. And I've applied at some of them to never hear back. IMO they're just fishing for people who have specific profiles that they don't disclose in the job description, not actually hiring.
