GigabyteCoin··on Aereo Founder Is Back with New High-Speed Wireless Service
I'm still seeing "To Read the Full Story, Subscribe or Sign In" when I click on that link, or when I click on the web link at the top of this page as well... strange.

Deleted cookies and all that jazz, too...

GigabyteCoin··on Firefox Can Now Get Push Notifications from Your Favorite Sites
>There's a 9-year-old bug open, requesting this feature.

Well is it a feature-request that a simple firefox extension could handle? Or is it a bug report about something inherently wrong with Firefox?

Because it sounds like a feature request to me.

GigabyteCoin··on Federal cops gets pulled over by TN cops, car illegally searched
Can confirm.

I was "digitally sniffed" for explosives once at an airport in Florida about 3 years ago.

They took a piece of what looked like tissue (probably an odorless control) and rubbed it inside my backpack.

They then placed that "tissue" into a very large machine (half the size of the man performing the procedure) which I assume smelled it for explosives.

After standing there for about 30 seconds staring at the machine, I was told I was free to proceed into the secure waiting area.

GigabyteCoin··on The Surreal Story of StubHub Screwing Over a Kobe Fan
>When the reason given for the 'mistake' is obviously false, it's not impossible.

The problem is that you could not concretely determine that to be the case. Thousands if not millions of ticket sales are canceled for a variety of reasons on StubHub every single day.

They would be going broke trying to investigate all of them for fraud, not to mention open themselves up to potential lawsuits by the alleged perpetrators they wrongly defamed if they made a mistake.

GigabyteCoin··on The Surreal Story of StubHub Screwing Over a Kobe Fan
Of course they knew what was going on. A seller "made a mistake" in listing the tickets, thus the tickets didn't actually exist in StubHub's eyes and they were forced to cancel the transaction.

It is impossible to know if the seller is telling the truth in this situation or not. Everybody makes mistakes, this seller just claims to have made a more costly one than usual.

StubHub is a marketplace, they can't investigate every time somebody claims to have made a mistake in listing their tickets.

IF the seller re-listed the exact same seats for a higher price once the original order was cancelled, I could see how StubHub could easily call out the fraudster and ban them from using their site... but even then the seller could just sign up using another credit card and a friend's address.

GigabyteCoin··on Iron law of oligarchy
>It's quite common for children to follow in their parents footsteps.

Sure, but there are arguably 300 million people in America who "would like to be president" I imagine. It's every child's dream, isn't it? To grow up to be president one day?

There are millions of people who want to play professional basketball, too. And many more "professional basketball player" positions available as there are POTUS. But even still, after the ~3,000 professional basketball players that the NBA has seen pass through it's doors, only 78 of them have become "second generation" professional basketball players. [0]

The odds of both sons of a former POTUS becoming (or even having a strong chance of becoming, in Jeb's case) president are just out of this world when compared to other disciplines.

edit: I changed 10,000 pro basketball players to ~3,000 as per forrestthewoods's info below.

GigabyteCoin··on Macbook charger teardown: surprising complexity inside Apple's power adapter
The problem is that apple expects typical consumers to treat the cable with such care.

Why should I have to buy 2 chargers (at $99 a pop, no less) when one charger for pretty much every other laptop company out there will work for years with "rough and careless" users, and only cost $20 to replace?

GigabyteCoin··on In a world where all terrorist attacks are not equal
>When my people died, they did not send the world in mourning. Their death was but an irrelevant fleck along the international news cycle, something that happens in those parts of the world.

I think the author fails to understand the close relationship that France has with most of the western world.

It's not that the west doesn't care about a terrorist attack that happened in Lebanon (I certainly heard about it the night of on my national news channel), it's just that we tend to care more about attacks in locales that we and other people we know have frequented more often.

I don't know anybody from Lebanon or anybody who has ever been to Lebanon. Personally, I have been to Paris. My entire family and my wife's family have been to Paris. My wife's bosses were just in Paris last week.

The attack on Paris just hits closer to home, that's all.

GigabyteCoin··on Lost at sea: a man who vanished for 14 months
I remember walking the boardwalk of Atlantic City when I was very young. My grandfather (a farmer) asked me if I wanted to "see something". Sure, I said.

The next thing I knew, he had grabbed a seagull by both feet with one hand and it was flapping it's wings wildly and squawking into my terrified face.

So I'd imagine that after a few weeks at sea and actually depending on catching birds/fish by hand for survival that one could do so.

GigabyteCoin··on Lost at sea: a man who vanished for 14 months
I find it incredible that their drifting sent them in the same general direction that Thor Heyerdahl [0] suspected (and verified in the Kon-Tiki expedition) that one would go without any extra power of their own.

The fact that a man who didn't even plan for the trip (or have any provisions) made it out alive even though he was virtually alone for the entire trip (his partner died after 2 months) leads me to believe that Thor was mostly right, and that South Americans did indeed travel to Polynesia and beyond probably more often than we originally thought.

What an amazing story.

GigabyteCoin··on Tesla autopilot stops a collision [video]
I wonder if all of this tesla-autopilot hype might increase their chances of being in a collision? At least initially.

I (regrettably) found myself leering over into a tesla driver's console the other day as he drove past to see if he was using autopilot or not and started to think of how dangerous it probably is to have everybody around you looking at you and not the road.

I guess at the very least tesla's autopilot will have some good practice early on.

GigabyteCoin··on New species combining wolf, coyote, and dog emerges in eastern North America
Guns are basically outlawed in Canada, yes.

You are allowed to own a handgun, but it has to be locked up 100% of the time unless you're at a gun range or out hunting with a government license.

You can own "long guns" too but that's a different and much longer story.

Still though, you're definitely not allowed to carry it around with you walking your dog and shoot any coyotes you see fit. In suburbia at least.

GigabyteCoin··on New species combining wolf, coyote, and dog emerges in eastern North America
So this is why we have been noticing exponentially more "coyotes" roaming around the suburbs of the GTA recently?

My girlfriend was walking our dog last week and saw 3 of them within an hour. The next morning she saw 2.

The other day I was walking the dog and some kid stopped me to warn me about a "wolf" that was growling at him around the corner.

This is all within steps of our small "downtown" and I just kept thinking how strange it was to see so many of them in such a short period of time. I have lived here all my life and I don't think that I have ever seen a single "coyote" in the flesh.

Looks like it's time to start carrying some pepper spray on my usual dog walks? The thought of watching some wild animal devour my dog (or me) is terrifying.
