I miss Windows 2000 Pro, it wasn’t bloated, pretty fast, didn’t crash and had the fewest problems.
Asia did not have patents and Europeans did. If my ideas aren’t my own and anyone can copy it, I wouldn’t want to put efforts into something others will clone.
I think patents are a necessary evil at least enough of it to make innovations, but foreign copycats and bootlegs serve this market well.
Do I agree with it? No, I use Linux but it’s really not an issue that hasn’t been around and isn’t easily ignored, and many people may never encounter it.
I say this as a Linux user who doesn’t use windows except for some Win only programs that VM and wine can’t run.
Pinephone doesn’t make software, it just makes hardware. It’s philosophy is they make hardware that’s easy to hack. All the software is community maintained and not official.
Use KDE, it's just like windows but better.
>I think my biggest fear are driver issues and having to convert a ton of files over to new formats for things I use to run my business. (Lots of MS Excel files for example). I use Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and Microsoft Visual Studio (F# Development) heavily. Excel is my biggest worry. And fighting with driver issues.
Use a windows VM if you have to, or just use MS's office cloud in browser or some electron app. The kernel is the driver, there are no driver installs except from nvidia off the top of my head. Everything just works. If you can use a server with linux you are fine.
>Anyone here convert from Windows to Linux? What kind of issues did you run into? Should I do it?
Yes, 10 to Kubuntu 18.04, no issues at all, less setup, miss foobar2000 and installed deadbeef instead.
>Perhaps most importantly: Which Linux distro should I choose, and which desktop environment?
Kubuntu 20.04 LTS is easy as a windows user, and if you want to use still use Windows I suggest Windows 10 LTSC.
You can have cash gift cards codes for reaching a tier so you can send payments of $5 or $10 off the top of my head, but seeing a bunch of .03 cent transactions would just annoy me.
Whats the point of developing on a device that needs lots of other parts that most people won't have? Its like selling a game system with no controllers and each controller can be used for only a few games (like eyefi).
This is why I don't bother with seeing m.2 SSDs enhancing online gameplay for faster loading. You always wait for the weakest and slowest loading game and network to start.
I feel like it would be newsworthy if they were trivial, or we'd see more of them. Today there was a story on malware on Pinephone, a device almost nobody has that didn't cost any money to anyone. If they were trivial, it would be utilized more and we wouldn't need to care about the wayland issues as much since the alternative is worst.
I tried wayland just because of this thread, and I got 2 crashes within minutes.
