GhettoComputers··on Pine64 and Radxa's new Pi CM4-compatible boards
That’s pretty different from ‘a ton’ and I doubt the zero is used meaningfully in iot. I’m trying to think of a scenario where the pi is better than an embedded system, it seems like overkill or overtly complicated to need Linux to monitor this stuff unless it’s also computing it before sending the data, maybe in thinking about it wrong? IoT and edge computing are what I generally think of, and something like Pi I see as a hub.
GhettoComputers··on Ask HN: What is the best way to pay users?
Not him, but I’d say the user experience is awful compared to others and your money isn’t safe. They hide lots of useful things, they can steal your money any time, and it feels extremely mentally taxing to deal with issues like them randomly breaking things or locking your account. It’s comparing a modern iPhone to the first edition of android, so much work, so slow, so unnecessarily complex to do simple things like unlock your account when they lock it randomly.

I do just to try. Popular isn’t a good measure, window on desktop, Intel graphics and Facebook are popular. I like systemd but I wouldn’t mind trying other init.

Widely suspected is nothing but speculation, and intelligence agencies aren’t exactly moral. Apple cooperates with China, but do people care when they buy their products?

You’re going to have to give the names of the journalists targeted and the country instead of vague suspicions that you say are wide.

You won’t like this but don’t use technology and especially the Internet. Your data is being mined by ISPs and linked to transactions, your mobile devices are triangulated so the know your location at all time, and expecting any privacy in a world that mines your data is impossible, especially since security actually means “hasn’t been hacked or don’t know if it’s been hacked yet”.

If you relocate, you can move to Japan, the culture is very privacy friendly. They don’t even tell spouses if they’ve seen a missing person. The culture shift is probably the easiest but immigration to Japan isn’t easy and they don’t allow dual citizenship.

My hated comment I thought the same thing , the site didn’t load completely for me, maybe you had the same issue. 4/7 are, there’s a brief mention of a Chinese site.

The focus is disproportionately on the Israeli firms which are often used by the US. The US armed and taught the Taliban, why are we blaming the Taliban instead of the CIA for giving us the problem? It’s like blaming constructors of a crude oil rig instead of the oil companies for making it.

Good points. They’re entitled to their research and development not being cloned. I think that fracturing is likely with RISC-V in the short term but a natural hegemony will form under some protocols, hopefully they don’t suck and can scale.
GhettoComputers··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
Yeah it’s really unfortunate that volume is spoken of as a good measure, like the failed idea that programmers need to write an amount to be considered productive. You can hire an inexperienced lawyer for less money and have the case take longer and maybe get more money, or they can be experienced lawyers who still know intricacies but need more time, effort, and work for a higher payout.

You get a quick experienced lawyer who charged you a lot more per session, you get advice that cuts down on busybody work and your case is simplified and you move on with your life to spend time doing other things.

Complexity is a trade off. It’s often seen as more work, but more work isn’t always better.

Do you already know the answer to that?

They can and choose not to, someone used their own 2012 tools they developed in a scientific paper (detection of Nazis)

Nobody controls their own data, it’s not FB it’s all data mined.

How can you trust Facebook? I refuse to use their rebrand, you don’t give trust, they earn it. Did Facebook earn your trust?

The proof they can detect is is they use it to advertise. https://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-faceboo...

Nazis are pretty easy to detect (caste discrimination can be trained, anti Muslim sentiments are easy too, but this is a low hanging fruit).

Like Leary said, do they care?

Facebook obviously can do it, they’d rather sell ads and use the users as marketing data instead of removing them, until they need to virtue signal. I can’t find the paper but I doubt anything I said is a surprise. These tools are used to make money, not moderate.

Most people do if they install a distro from my experience. It’s easy and it just works.

You never install more software in Linux? I certainly do, it’s why I got it. You can use this to make Windows “distros”. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufactur...

I’m not a Windows user but it’s not fundamentally different, Linux can come bloated, Windows can be stripped or another version like LTSC can be used.

Volume of “good drugs” can offset this, but addiction with high margins is the best model for making money. Fentanyl analogs are LSD dose size, not expensive, highly physically addictive and very deadly done without proper dosing.
GhettoComputers··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
It’s unfair to quantify it as amount of code, it might be excellent but longer programs and complexity isn’t always better for debugging, understanding, and maintenance even if performance is better simpler code that is lazier isn’t always worst.

“Hacking is cool” in longform isn’t eyebrow raising to me.
GhettoComputers··on Facebook bans 7 'surveillance-for-hire' companies that spied on 50k users
Not really, heroin has been laced with fentanyl analogs and even things it doesn’t synergize like in cocaine causing random deaths by knowingly selling (pre)cut chemicals isn’t morally neutral.

GhettoComputers··on Ask HN: What is the best way to pay users?
Brave did something where they’d “pay” sites by making a default wallet and you had to redeem it. It’s as successful as you can guess.

If you can be less vague it might help, such as amounts of payments or times you want to pay out.

GhettoComputers··on Ask HN: Private Alternatives to Alexa?
Can you use an Alexa and gut it while replacing the controller? I don’t know how it mixes the mics but you can have your case and array, hopefully the hardware isn’t dependent on the processor.

What about a controller you carry around with you that you can speak into, like phone software, a watch, or if you’re into the hacker chic look, a mounted mic you wear?

I don’t think speaking is even the best choice, it’s limiting, a phone can be a web interface, gestures over a sensor seems reasonable for basic controls and speech to text can be piped into it as commands though your phone you carry with you anyway.

If you’re controlling lights it’s less hassle though a GUI, and limiting it to voice will not make your life easier.

Thank you. I think these hacks will be seen as a historical curiosity with an influx of RISC-V chips that will be more open, ExpressIf is moving to it and hackable IoT chips are utilizing them more too.

They started out as a bookstore but Bezos had experience in finance, they quickly sold media, and the warehouses were nothing like other bookstores and it looks like it was more a base for larger operations that didn’t anticipate staying a bookstore, the same way their online functionality didn’t stop at a website, AWS and selling other stuff came fast.

Sure they were a bookstore first but they over engineered it to scale.

Thanks, I think the page didn’t load completely for me, and it had lots of info on the Israeli firms.

4/7 is a lot and there’s a lot of focus on it in the first parts. One is Chinese and there’s very little focus on it or info. I doubt this will have any significance, I’m not sure what spying means from the article. Are they just scrapers of public info or have friend requests that you’d share your info with publicly like the first image? Spying is ok when FB gets all the info, but it’s not ok if their ad revenue can be threatened or data they get on their own.

If you’re sharing info on Facebook it’s hard to take the words “spying” seriously unless you say Facebook is a spy too.

GhettoComputers··on Using AI to Animate Children’s Drawings
I think we should be careful of addictive technology in general, and it should be seen as a classifier rather than inherent tech innovation or new threats. Video games for instance can be very addicting, I wish I had done things differently. Drugs can be seen as obvious addictions but dopamine hits from electronics isn’t seen the same way.

Music liscening issues is when I do on streaming sites. Try uploading liscenfed music to Facebook, YouTube or instagram.

The algorithms are suggesting it. Is pop music good if radios play it all the time?

I will, KDE discourages me somewhat because it’s not enough or relevant information the few times I tried using their reporter. I think it has to do with mouse speed like gnome.

Everyone lies and overstates achievements online.

I’m a billionaire with 22in, my dinner with Bezos went well, I had to ignore 22 messages from hot models wanting to fuck to post this, I could have been working for 12k an hour but I decided your post was worth replying to even though satellite Internet costs on my huge yacht costs a lot more than you make in a day.

I’m going to fly on my private jet now, feel free to contact me about how you can invest and fall for my crypto margin trading that ends badly for you.
