GertG··on What my 4-year-old taught me about technology
Sure, new generations interact with media differently. But isn't this article reading way too much into a 4 year old liking to touch things and not having patience? I'm sure I also threw a tantrum every time commercials interrupted my favorite tv shows. (Still do, occasionally.)
GertG··on Nearly 40 percent of Europeans suffer mental illness
How do they come up with the 38%? From the numbers given in the article I get: 165 sufferers in a population of 514. Isn't that 32%?
GertG··on How we split test our job listing titles with Optimizely
One must love conclusions like this: "Even though the results aren't statistically significant (...), we were able to learn ..."
GertG··on Show HN: I built an app to improve your Vocabulary

GertG··on We'll build *any* webapp in 7 days
In FF4, the "launch fast" part of your title is almost completely hidden. What happened, only had 6 days to make it? ;-)
GertG··on My Year as an Amateur Android Game Developer
A harsh analysis, but entirely consistent with all I've been reading about Android Market experiences. The developers that luck out and get hundreds of thousands of downloads for a game or even another application, STILL hardly make a living out of it (for the limited time that the success lasts, that is).

It's enough for me to bury my own commercial Android plans. I'll just finish the hobby game I'm working on as best as I can and release it for free. For a few dollars a month I'm not going to pester users with ads either. Who knows, with that experience and changes in the market I'll still have a shot at an Android business later on.

For the braver developers in this thread who already have applications out there, and building on the network promotion mentioned here: Why don't you get together and set up your own system of referrals? That could work much better than just referring to your own other applications (if any) in a closed loop.

GertG··on Poll: What OS do you currently use?
Windows XP for work, Ubuntu and Linux Mint for fun. (Both work and fun being programming...)
GertG··on Belgian man completes 365 marathons in 365 consecutive days
That's supposed to be a picture of his last race, which he finished in 4h21m59sec according to this (Dutch) article: http://sport.be.msn.com/running/nl/nieuws/?Article_ID=492504
GertG··on How we made a $25,000 website for $3,000
Still trying to make up my mind about crowd sourcing, but I like to compare it to the well-established practice of architecture contests. That system also gets criticism for forcing architects to do a lot of work without a guarantee of being paid anything, but nevertheless it is broadly accepted: big-name bureaus participate in them too. The reason why it works, imo, is because the potential reward is much bigger. They might spend weeks preparing an entry, but in case of a win it's usual to have months or years worth of paid work. In my eyes, for web design/software crowd sourcing to gain the credibility needed to attract more than starters looking for a foot in the door, it will need the same effort/reward ratio. For example, you design a specific part of the future website in detail, and the winner gets to redesign the whole site. That way, the client still has the benefit of getting more than well-written intentions in a project proposal, and the contestants know that the potential reward is bigger than being paid for what he has already done.
GertG··on Ask HN: What do you think of our new domain name generator?
You might want to correct the typo in the second heading: How to I use it?
