GeorgeMac··on Show HN: Identicon library + command line tool written in Golang
All criticism/contributions welcome! I was just toying around to see if I could do it. Then I refactored out a little library. I will continue to work on it!

Try out the command line tool:

go get github.com/GeorgeMac/idicon/cmd/idicon

idicon html -w 5 -h 5 -x 10 your-name > your-name.html

I like the fact that can be publicly advertised as a unique selling point.
GeorgeMac··on GoTenna – Send and receive messages even when you don’t have service
Is it me or is their a guy in the video getting baked? Not only that it is around the security part where he is getting in contact with his mate "Jason Greengrocer" about getting more. That part makes me happy!
GeorgeMac··on How does the concurrency primitives in Rust compare to the ones in Go?
Right so you name the sender and receiver right? Then say a channel exists between them? Then send and receive are explicitly called on the sender and receiver respectively. Which is the opposite of how Go names the channel and the `sender` is the routine which calls a send `x<-` on the named channel. The `receiver` in Go would be the main routine which calls receive on the named channel `<-x`. I think that is the subtle difference.
GeorgeMac··on How does the concurrency primitives in Rust compare to the ones in Go?
I cannot speak for Rust, but I can speak for Go. The actor model is almost the reverse of how Go handles concurrency. Instead of sending to named actors, in Golang you name your pipes (or channels). Then you handle these pipes as first class citizens and routines can choose to receive or send on them. e.g.

1. In your main routine you build a channel of ints (noticed they're typed) named `x`

2. You hand `x` and an integer i (incremented by one for each new routine) to ten routines which will double that number and send the result down `x`

3. Your main routine then receives on `x` and builds a list of results. It hasn't blocked on the doubling operations for each integer `i` because you sent each of those operations in a new routine.

Ignoring the fact I haven't managed closing the channel `x` you can get the gist of how channels are named and passed around.

I can't say what the alternative would be in Rust, but I hope that sheds more light on Go!

GeorgeMac··on Introducing Paper
Is it me, or is it just facebook with news feeds and a nice big handful of gestures. Their must be a massive increase in RSI due to hundreds of apps/interfaces with different gesture controls. I don't know if my muscle memory has anymore room for this app. Im going to end up loosing important things, like konami codes...
GeorgeMac··on Ask HN: Quitting my job
I think you're right. I particularly need to see some of my outside of work projects to some level of completion. Beef up the Github account. Haha and like you say, Java skills are highly sort after. I shouldn't disregard that.

Cheers

I think you're hitting the nail on the head with this not really being related to an issue with the language choice. I think I just came to a decision I don't want to develop for the web in Java. I kind of lead with the language argument, but really my issue is with mgmt and processes. Mostly with promises from mgmt, regarding a positive change in the way we do things. However, this has been a long long time coming. I have started to get to a bit of a too little too late predicament. This has been fuelled by my mentors who have all left my company for the same reasons. Leaving me without a mentor figure, which is something I am really striving to obtain again. I would like a mentor at least until my development confidence has been made more concrete. As mentioned above, my development career is still early days.

What you have said about architecture and design also rings true! Many other employees in my company are crying out for the development a more maintainable and stable product, coupled with selling this product to clients expectations. Which we seem to struggle to get right time and time again.

I will definitely take you advice as well with the interview process. I need to ground my wants from a future employer.

Really appreciate the detailed response! Helps put in to perspective what my priorities should be!

Cheers!

It's interesting you say that! I have considered at least re building our demo product in Rails. Maybe this is a chance to at least show off to my own company that RoR would provide us with less headaches. I also completely agree about the patience side of things. I think my patience wore a bit thin today. I think I just thought I would use HN to vent my anger! haha. Thank you for the advice!

Cheers

GeorgeMac··on Ask HN: Quitting my job
Hey there,

Thank you for the advice. I do need to prioritise my development of open source projects outside of work. I have some RoR projects to work on. So I think I just need to push their priority to top of my list! Thank you mate!

GeorgeMac··on XPath is actually pretty useful once it stops being confusing
I have made a little XPATH primer. Which is very much a work in progress. Check it out on my github: https://github.com/GeorgeMac/xpath-primer

There are a few issues I am having with my markdown editor, in comparison to githubs markdown support.

I think they should delay the display by 12 hours. So it shows daylight of the previous day, during the night and vice versa. Even if it will be annoyingly lit up. At least they won't have any issues with aircraft.
