FuNe··on Ask HN: 8 years working, now 3-4 months off to learn. Looking for advice
You probably refer to low cost airlines. Things are much different in normal airlines I think.
FuNe··on Ask HN: 8 years working, now 3-4 months off to learn. Looking for advice
"Google-like working environment" You mean colleagues full of themselves, colorful furniture and lousy work/life balance? I think you are a bit prejudiced against non-software house companies. It's not that bad (according to my experience). Neither are software houses full of dream jobs (SW game industry anyone?)
FuNe··on Everyone is quitting
They are at the correct side of the technology (with Cloud) and they excel at the race to the bottom (AKA sucking as employer and paying as little as possible). So are most of the employers in Asia producing excellent gadgets (i.e. FoxConn). The good thing with racing to the bottom is -well- sometime you reach it and then you either have to get better or perish.
FuNe··on Xiaomi’s first laptop is a Macbook Air rival
Why windows? Won't that add to the price? Why not a linux "version" for 100$ less?
FuNe··on Employee benefits at Basecamp
They offer vacations too (3 weeks per year - towards the end of the list). I think Sabbatical is on top of that. I think their benefits are quite good even compared to the typical benefits of nice-to-work European countries (i.e. Germany).
FuNe··on Methane gas trapped underground in Siberia causes earth's surface to wobble
Definitely not a good spot to have a smoke.

PS: The article reads 'And when a scientist digs their heel into the earth, the methane gas is audibly released through the tear in the grass.'. Which scientists? They are clearly hunters.

FuNe··on The axle count of trains in Switzerland must not be a multiple of 2^8
Dunno much about trains but how far away from the traffic light would the button be? Certainly not more than 256 x wagon.length. I.e. in the unlikely case of a train with 256 wagons the light will signal green (unfortunate) but while it does so there will be a train passing by the crossroad. So in that case only (257 wagons won't do it - they'll merely cause a green blip) you'd need to have a really pedantic driver at wheel to try to pass because light went green.

FuNe··on Oracle and the fall of Java EE
My feeling too. I believe it comes from Architecture Astronauting: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000018.html Java/enterprise world is pestered by such guys.
FuNe··on Living, in Limbo
All the best and the most pleasant holiday possible :)

First time I read something of the guy and his blog made an entrance in my quick dial.

I take he lives in Germany. That is one of the best and free healthcare systems in Europe (if not the world). Timely and hassle-free access to medication and care is hugely important when you race against time. Kudos to the system there.

FuNe··on The employees shut inside coffins
Not far from truth. Not far at all for many of us.

PS: Some good ole Pink Floyd music would suit this as well.

FuNe··on Ways to maximize your cognitive potential
It's not that bad. Juice is in the details. Give it a chance.
FuNe··on Ways to maximize your cognitive potential
Admit it. You don't have kids - right?
FuNe··on Ways to maximize your cognitive potential
" Efficiency is not your friend when it comes to cognitive growth. In order to keep your brain making new connections and keeping them active, you need to keep moving on to another challenging activity as soon as you reach the point of mastery in the one you are engaging in. You want to be in a constant state of slight discomfort, struggling to barely achieve whatever it is you are trying to do " Then working in IT (aka being in a constant state of noob-ness) is making you ever smarter.
FuNe··on Investing Returns on the S&P500
<fun-at-parties-mode: on> Ehm it's a bit of a long shot to assume next 100 years will be more or less business as usual. Having said that and after a quick look around the climate frontier, economy and international affairs I'd probably buy (if I had money to burn) defence industries stock. <fun-at-parties-mode: off>
FuNe··on There Is No Handbook for Being a Writer
Hm, dunno. I'd say writing is about having something to say. Especially something other people want or (more importantly) need to read. I don't think that Charles Bukowski was particularly disciplined or educated for example.
FuNe··on Common definitions in chip design and production
Original title is: "200 chip definitions everyone should know" OP had the good sense to change and strip it off the of self-importance and self-righteousness (although the writer probably meant to say 'everyone in IT business). Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to be stupidly pedantic but no I do not think that social worker next door needs to know what ADC means.

IT-wise, yes younger generations seem to be in total loss with ICs and I believe the simple reason is that there are no jobs there anymore so there isn't a motivation to learn more about it. Virtual everything (as started off with JVM) has contributed too there. Not sure though that they are missing out that much.

FuNe··on Why this CEO is worth almost $1 billion but lives in a trailer park
Well said. Lots of us chasing after few apartments is a recipe for crisis (paid dearly by the financial weakest).

Sadly enough I don't see telecommuting catching on in the big companies. Too few ads for 100% remote jobs (i.e. crazy competition) and almost always from small start ups. Telecommuting once per week does not cut it (you still need to live close to work).

FuNe··on Ask HN: How do I stop myself being toxic?
Technique is what you probably missing. Try reading a classic like https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4865.How_to_Win_Friends_...

Bottom line: You can criticize as long as you wrap it up the 'right' way

FuNe··on Why this CEO is worth almost $1 billion but lives in a trailer park
Living in Ireland amidst the housing crisis (rents shooting in the sky) I can only testify that we desperately need some kind of democratization and lower barrier to home owning. Not sure if that is a matter of outlook and politics as much as innovation but surely this seem to be looking in the right direction.
FuNe··on UK votes to leave EU
EU was never about the people. It was and is all about banks and corporations. When they had enough for themselves and to provide enough scrapes for people to keep everyone happy all seemed well. The moment they started bailing in states to save banks and corporations (selling this as German 'austerity' fiscal policy) it all started cracking. So - to more and more 'Europeans' EU means a never ending future of joblessness and 'austerity' imposed on them by fat cats in Brussels, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, etc. It is unfortunate that extreme right wings and nazis are capitalizing on this frustration but somebody eventually would.
FuNe··on Antarctic CO2 Hit 400 PPM for First Time in 4M Years
Let it roll.

Few in the industrialized world if anyone really gives a shite (1). Lots of well-fed educated westerners would lose sleep if "free" economy is coughing but don't really care about this. Run away capitalism creating the problem in the first place is also -ehm- the reason why mostly leftists seem to get it. Not that this helps. It just makes the whole thing even more partizan.

Sad truth is the guys that are really screwed (so far and at the foreseeable future) by this are not exactly HN commentators. To them this might mean drought and death next year but to us -fat cats- this apparently means a danger to economic development. We simply do not have our asses on the line (yet) - which is why we can talk this to death but do _nothing_ to really prevent it. We might wake up when we start losing relatives due to 50C heat waves. Who knows.

And even then, if we get it, who would actually do something? We -at a global scale- have been terrible at resolving much simpler crises. Want an example? Ebola virus was stopped last minute. Zika virus is on the loose and is gonna get worse (because Olympic games will go on at the epicenter despite hundreds academics calling for delaying them). If nobody makes money out of it nobody cares. Our whole system is simply dancing to that music.

So - let it roll babe.

1. <brutally honest mode on> Including my fat ass. </brutally honest mode>

FuNe··on Antarctic CO2 Hit 400 PPM for First Time in 4M Years
"The science has been misappropriated by anti-capitalist activists." That is an undeniable fact - last time I entered the local university I needed to fist-bump a guy like Che, chant a few slogans, spit on a Friedman picture and show latest Naomi Klein book at the fraternity doormen. Oh god it was awful.

Welcome Zika et al
FuNe··on Natural Language for Developers
It was awful. It washed the cat and fed the car.
