Frummy··on Large Language Models Show Concerning Tendency to Flatter Users

Frummy··on In a showdown of psychotherapists vs. ChatGPT, the latter wins, new study finds
Even if it turns out to be worse, having an alternative can be good. Imagine a bunch of therapists in [insert country you find evil], they obviously depend on salaries and for example could divert critical but healthy sentiments toward e g the local military. Strange example but just the cultural variation and independence I mean can be worthwhile.

But then there’s the logs and the training and telemetry maybe a journalist for example would have to run locally if they had such a demand without better alternatives

Frummy··on The IRS Is Buying an AI Supercomputer from Nvidia
The people maintaining the systems could use AI to grapple with transforming it faster, no? I mean, if you have to rewrite existing programs from 1995 all the time you might as well feed an AI the context and get some suggestions and just verify and test the changes instead of manually with pen and paper jotting out the tree of the sections and the database relations and how the architecture requires it to be and what new legislations need to be accounted for in what way etc etc..

So AI can be used to speed up transforming the existing infrastructure instead of AI doing the actual processing which would obviously be not the direct use case in anyones mind

It could also be implemented in less volumous tasks, like specialised scenarios like complex cases of fraud detection idk

Frummy··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
Pardon the cult-like musings ahead of time, but it’s par for the course.

My initial thought was rationalism is obviously egoic and selfobsessed, loving and trusting ones own thoughts. Set theory should tell you that you cant make a mental image of yourself to act by that will be more encompassing than the totality of what you are. You can’t build a mental model inside of your ego that will work better than your natural instinct for all interaction with reality. Trust sheer emotion to say that rationalising any loss of life means an upside down philosophy, a castle in the sky. This cult with its ”functional decision theory” […that the normative principle for action is to treat one’s decision as the output of a fixed mathematical function”] makes actions a sort of cold choice without emotion. Like people using religion in war to remain cool when killing, a misuse of a neutral idea such as a mathematical function.

But it can’t be that easy to handwave it away. When Aum Shinrikyo was mentioned down below, I changed my mind, there’s no easy answers. A sick leader can justify anything and you can judge any tree from its fruits. From doctrine section on that wikipedia: ”Their teachings claimed a nuclear apocalypse was predicted to occur soon” (Parallell to AI now in rationalism), ”Furthermore, Lifton believes, Asahara "interpreted the Tibetan Buddhist concept of phowa in order to claim that by killing someone contrary to the group's aims, they were preventing them from accumulating bad karma and thus saving them" ” (Parallell to rational behavior guidance gone wrong, these datascientists just lost touch, Norm Macdonald would say theyre real jerks pardon the humor).

I just the other day listened to Eckhart Tolles podcast where he talked about doomsday fear, on the bottom of the transcript it says: [“There's also an unconscious desire in many human beings for what we could call the collapse of the human made world.

Because most humans experience the world as a burden. They have to live in this world, but the world is problematic. The world has a heaviness to it.

You have your job, you have the taxes, you have money, and the world is complex and heavy. And there's an unconscious longing for people in what we might bluntly call the end of the world. But ultimately, what they are longing for is, yes, it is a kind of liberation, but the ultimate liberation that they are really longing for is the liberation from themselves, the liberation from what they experience as their problematic, heavy sense of self that's inseparable from the so-called outer world.

And so there's a longing in every human for that. But that's not going to happen yet.”] Eckhart Tolle: Essential Teachings: Essential Teachings Special: Challenging Times Can Awaken Us 30 jan. 2025

Obvious parallell to AI doomsaying can be drawn.

When we were children we experienced unfiltered reality without formulas to replace our decisions. But we could even then be wrong, stupid, or convinced to do stupid shit by a charismatic playground bully. But when we were wrong it resulted in falling and scraping our knee or whatever. Theres no reality checks in internet culture bubbles.

This is sick people huddling together under a sick charismatic warlord-ish leader whose castle in the sky is so selfcoherent that it makes others want to systemize it aided by the brainwashing methods.[”Zizians believe normal ideas about morality are mostly obfuscated nonsense. They think real morality is simple and has already been put to paper by Jeremy Bentham with his utilitarian ideas. Bentham famously predicted an expanding scope of moral concern. He says if humanity is honest with itself it will eventually adopt uncompromising veganism. Zizians think arguments which don't acknowledge this are not about morality at all, they're about local struggles for power delaying the removal of an unjust status quo.”] Insert Watchmen pic of grandiose narc Adrian Veidt asking Dr Manhattan if utilitarian masskilling was the right choice

And then the sleep deprivation indoctrination method dulls even their rationality even further. So they can all become ego clones of the cultleader.

And that other link in this thread mentioned other groups of rationalists debugging from demons sent by adversary groups and other psychotic stuff, yeah is it the chicken or the egg where those people gather in a place where people loop with their mind or is it the mindlooping that sends them in a downwards spiral. Maybe we should calculate the bayesian.

That’s very correct haha. Thanks for hyping, it’s always awesome to see. You’re right because how can I build complex moneymaking stuff if I’m too hesitant to build simple cheap stuff, all the more reason to get to building so it doesn’t stay that way

Frummy··on 2k-year-old wine and the uncanny immediacy of the past
Even recent kings have this grand education from the best of the best if not from actual geniuses, examples abound like Alexander the great and Aristotle, and usually there’s other examples in wikipedia articles for most recent kings, even without tutoring here’s a list of books that could have been used to educate royalty in less ancient times than this case but of course maybe a book wont teach craftsmanship https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirrors_for_princes

The elite/aristocracy of these old ages was at the top for reasons that make some sort of sense even though it could be violent it would be perhaps not completely uncorrelated with ability, if a prince is born into it they’d sometimes get taught multiple languages, music, poetry, on top of the reasonable politics and warfare, strategy etc. As for craftsmanship that is a good question since it’s working with ones hands but with the examples here so far it would make sense if they could just get instructed by the best craftsmen as well to learn that too of course this is maybe too far backwards and another continent to extrapolate

Frummy··on David Lynch has died
He said something like, in speaking with a therapist, ”if i get therapy, is there a risk i’ll lose my creativity?”, and she said ”yes”. So he didn’t take it if i recall, and did this transcendental meditation thing instead. That’s someone who loves his art.

Frummy··on Self Unhelped: On psychoanalysis and therapeutic culture
Sorry I don’t understand the question and how it relates to my comment? If you’re currently writing on an eisenhower matrix, if that’s what you’re asking, I suppose you’d have to evaluate for yourself which options place where on the two axes in relation to your own life. Probably AA takes preference for you, we often frame things in a way leaning toward what we already chose haha :)
Frummy··on Self Unhelped: On psychoanalysis and therapeutic culture
You know I think a lot of the problems is we are looking for magic when it is dull and boring around us. If all else fails, just stay at the surface and say everything is as it seems and nothing is deep or dramatic, and do nothing else but your eisenhower matrix (what’s important and urgent first, four squares on a two axis box). Because when we say nothing is magical we stop looping internally trying to find a touch of divinity when what we need is to interact with the world in a structured way to build momentum to change our environment.
Frummy··on Ask HN: How to learn marketing and sales as a solo entrepreneur?
It might not help directly with digital, but if you get on the phone to sell something that gives a sort of fundamental understanding of sales that can inspire plans for other avenues of sales and marketing

Frummy··on OpenAI's Sora has been leaked
Yeah this 'leak' can be plugged really easily, more like a temporary taste test rather than full blown model leak I mean the spreader doesn't have to be the originator (lazy, bad security etc) either, but could be Have to agree with that tweet saying Sora isn't as impressive anymore there's competitors and so on time just keeps compounding on alternatives Anyways the huggingface space just keeps restarting and giving error 500 I guess there's some loop with increased attention and infra not keeping up in time (likes go up by roughly 5 per restart attempt)
Frummy··on Everyone is capable of, and can benefit from, mathematical thinking
Thanks for sharing. The reverse direction here, I'm trying to go from fuzziness to the exactness of those true/false dichotomies, haha. The way I've been attacking mathematics, it's like a tree in the forest, one could start with the axioms and from the base reach each branch and the leaves and fruits. But I've just been walking around the tree, looking at the leaves and fruits and branches from different directions to see ways of climbing without doing a whole lot of climbing. What I mean is I've been thinking and reading in an imprecise way a whole lot without actually juggling symbols with pen and paper, haha. Or a roadtrip analogy, I've done little driving and a lot of map ogling. At least I won't miss the turns when I pick up some speed.
Frummy··on Everyone is capable of, and can benefit from, mathematical thinking
Have you ever ascribed numbers to real life personal problems? I find that managing to frame something bothersome into a converging limit somehow, really dissolves stress.. A few times at least.

Frummy··on Buddhist Retreat: Why I gave up on finding my religion (2003)
My personal feeling is that when some sort of spiritual practice succeeds I almost forget why I did it in the first place because it was so low level and tightly bound to my experiencing of reality that it couldn't really be described (or remembered) in words.

And then if it succeeds in eliminating like a bad aura that envelops each moment of perception, you almost forget it ever existed and then one can throw the baby out with the bathwater, stop practicing altogether what brought one back up and then beyond to the level of pride where one can dismiss it all, only to three years later or so need to adopt a certain level of spiritual practice whether that's contemplative or practical or community-oriented.

As criticism it's completely valid on a personal plane and multiple times we can all see we've had to dismiss ideas as not fitting our lives anymore, but I also can't help but notice a certain negative tint to the entire article and leaps in logic in the criticism. This is obviously indicative that maybe the author had their fair fill of fruit and on a slightly filled stomach moves on to science etc. But it's not a debunk or a representation of the faith and practices beyond the personal journey of the author.

Frummy··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
Thanks for the advice. Potentially, it's not insanely farfetched to assume AI and math (currently doing math) can unlock more precision with less data and invasiveness. While it's at one level physics, stronger algorithms and analysis can maybe reduce the size + cost + danger of the hardware, as well as require less data for more precision. Just a hunch. There are always plenty creative ways to experiment without animal harm as well, just a matter of attention and will to explore. Yeah, safety is super important, and if this sort of scanning can be made better in a fresh way that would unlock a lot. Just like having a 10x cheaper API that does the same job automatically becomes useful in new unforeseen ways.
Frummy··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
Yeah the focus would be on inventing non-radiation means of scanning, e g further developing Ultrasound Elastography (vibrations) or Diffuse Optical Tomography (near-infrared light). So there's the concept of a thingamajig, a plot device that moves things forward. Focusing on a narrow area gives opportunity for specificity hacks that can then unlock further pivot opportunities. You know start specific and go wider once something works
Frummy··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
Money Oh that sort of why Because it's a spiritual thing, the yuppies who are also slightly hippies would want to see size and health and calcification %, more data sort of like a feedback loop like if you can do crunches and see more pronounced abs in the mirror, why wouldn't you want to meditate and drink and eat healthy and see if stuff changes in the physical state of the brain
Frummy··on Functional ultrasound through the skull
I recently had the idea to start a company that measures specifically properties of the pineal gland, I think people would pay for that. I have no domain expertise whatsoever. If anyone wants to investigate this deeper with me let me know
