FranksTV··on The best engineering interview question I've ever gotten
I got a job as a front end developer. We had a ton of streaming data and needed to index it in the front end.

The "right" solution would be to fix it in the back end so that we didn't fetch all that data when it wasn't needed, but that wasn't possible because of the horrific project/product management.

So I had to build binary search trees to index the data so we could work with it fast enough to have a reasonable user experience.

So yeah -- you will need some of this stuff. You're constantly going to be searching for things, reversing things, looking for patterns.

it won't be so clear and abstract, as a leetcode puzzle but the reason why I had to write that binary tree was because whoever came before had clearly never considered using one and was doing everything completely wrong. It was a disaster and made the codebase insane.

If they filtered in the hiring process for people who know the basics then things would have been a lot more performant, and they wouldn't have burned so much time working around the performance issues caused by his terrible solution.

FranksTV··on How Do I get my Co-Founder to Leave?
This is a bit naive -- agreements don't require written documentation to be binding, and there are lots of indicators that an agreement existed (listing him on the website for example.)

The real problem is that this relationship (and it's unresolved status) would need to be disclosed to future investors.

The best solution is to come to a reasonable agreement with the person about exiting them with some compensation for their work that is reasonable.

Walking away entirely is definitely possible, but it exposes the company to future liability, so it's worth cleaning up properly.

Retention of staff. Finding good engineers is exceedingly hard, and I imagine there were rumblings of an internal revolt.
FranksTV··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
You can drag whole screens from one monitor to the next. Open command center and then just drag the whole screen over in the top bar.

For me it's a two-finger double tap on the mouse (I think--not at my computer at the moment.)

FranksTV··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
I prefer windows to be full screen. Then I three-finger swipe between apps on my trackpad.

Snapchat is privacy. You can send a snap and it's deleted -- and importantly your mom can't find the pictures of you smoking weed.

When developers change roles so frequently, being an employer with a reputation for being full of smart people is a good recruiting tactic.

Not because you get good work done, but because people will apply because you look good on a resume.

It's definitely not perfect -- great fun, but lacking polish.

I got diagnosed at 35. Definitely do it -- it's been life changing for me.

But don't stop with a diagnosis, get some coaching from an ADHD specialist. There's so much more to it than just attention -- emotional dysregulation, time-blindess, executive function impairment.

It's a whole thing. But with support you can cope with most of it. And most importantly learn to separate the condition from.your character.

FranksTV··on It’s 2022 and the Magic Mouse still charges from the bottom
It's 2022 and people who have never used a magic mouse still think this is an issue.

I have to charge my mouse quarterly.

I flip it over, plug it in and take the dog for a walk. By the time I'm back it's good to go for another couple months.

FranksTV··on World War III became possible (2015)
This is some needless scafemongering.

American responses to a tactical nuclear weapon aren't just wipe out life on earth or roll over.

As we are seeing there are political, economic, and social levers that can be pulled.

Beyond that, the cyber domain is highly active. Both Russia and the US have advanced cyber capabilities -- look at Stuxnet.

While I don't doubt that Putin is crazy enough to believe this nuclear deescalation strategy, I find it hard to imagine that somehow this writer at Vox has thought it through but it somehow escaped the notice of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

FranksTV··on The Crypto Backlash Is Booming
Interoperability isn't juat a technical problem. It's also an economic and game balance problem.

All three problems are insurmountable. It's just a monumentally stupid idea.

Bernie Madoff started forging documents in the early 1970s and turned himself in in 2008. Twelve years is nothing.
FranksTV··on The Crypto Backlash Is Booming
1) Stocks in companies have value not just because people buy and sell them to each other at higher and higher prices, but because companies add value to the world, and generate income.

2) the difference between a crypto rug pull and a company being drained of its resources is that the second one would result in a police investigation, and fraud charges. It would be illegal, because of the laws that protect investors from exactly that situation.

If "It's all the same" then why invest in crypto at all? It's way riskier, and had a lot more negative externalities.
