FrankenPC··on Visual Information Theory
Personally, I feel like a moron most of the time when I'm here on HN. The caliber of engineers here is astounding. So, I comment here hoping for clarification. I'm nowhere near the level of engineering necessary to feel confident to blog.

EDIT: I understand optimizing search algorithms to create better P=NP O(n) solutions. So, I guess I not totally stupid.

FrankenPC··on Visual Information Theory
It's a conceptual building block. YMMV. I enjoyed the concepts regardless of actual applicability.
FrankenPC··on Visual Information Theory
"I love the feeling of having a new way to think about the world. I especially love when there’s some vague idea that gets formalized into a concrete concept. Information theory is a prime example of this."

THIS! THIS is why I love programming and electronics/mechanical engineering. I live for the new ways to think.

FrankenPC··on If You're Not Paranoid, You're Crazy
I'm thinking about running Wireshark on my machine to analyze the packets to see what is going on. Or, putting a non-switch ethernet hub between my wifi router and my modem to tap in with Wireshark to see if anything else looks fishy. You're right. We should all be paranoid.
FrankenPC··on The world needs at least 600M new jobs in the next decade for young people
At some point China will stop believing in the value of US bonds.
FrankenPC··on If You're Not Paranoid, You're Crazy
What scares me is how few people take passwords, anti-virus/anti-malware, clean browsing habits, etc. seriously.

Without better end-node security, individuals and the entire internet are always at risk. (I'm primarily looking at you Windows...). In other words, IMO big government and corporate overreach are minor problems compared to the active-assault going on to dominate the non-technical end-user computers.

> For C# equivalence, imagine if all the most easily accessible functions operated on the concrete `List` to avoid having to introduce interfaces and all had duplicates taking an IEnumerable instead (that doesn't quite work as C# uses methods but there you are).

Thanks! Considering 'List' is one of the few structures of FP I understand, that makes actual sense.

FrankenPC··on The world needs at least 600M new jobs in the next decade for young people
Makes me wonder if there's already some form of credit default swapping going on with student loans that we won't uncover until after the bubble pops.

>They're also guaranteed by the federal government, which has seemingly infinite resources.

IMO That resource is GDP. If American's can't find meaningful work that has financial value not just domestically, but internationally, we'll see how much of that resource is left after a few decades. Or more accurately, we'll see a VERY tiny percentage of Americans with vast wealth and the majority struggling for subsistence because the government has essentially been deactivated due to lack of funds.

FrankenPC··on Resigning from the Haskell Platform
It's not a conclusion. I have no idea what's going on with FP. So, it's a genuine question.
FrankenPC··on Resigning from the Haskell Platform
Hmmm... Is F# a good alternative? I already have a ton of experience with .NET and C#. I'm thinking about doing a deep dive into functional programming and don't want to waste my time with something that has a major fundamental flaw.
FrankenPC··on Mercury Spill
So sorry you had to go through this. It's a legit homeowners nightmare. What could be worse? Some kind of crazy crawlspace mold outbreak?
FrankenPC··on Mercury Spill
How long have you owned the house? Toxic waste like that are grounds to sue the previous owner if not disclosed during the purchase...at least in California.
FrankenPC··on DARE: The Anti-Drug Program That Never Actually Worked
Developing software has all kinds of metrics that show the team if the progress is in the right direction, effective, and future proof.

How is it a program like DARE could have gone on for so long without peering into their own performance metrics to see if the program had any value?

It's a rhetorical question. It's obviously political. A group of powerful people banked their political cred on the concept and was unwilling to admit defeat. Just like the entire drug war.

FrankenPC··on The True Cost of an Expensive Medication
Heck, I'd be OK with a sliding scale regulation. If someone can afford the full cost without bankrupting them, then fine. If they have no money, the the cost is radically reduced and IDEALLY payed through public medical support systems.

Call it the "We actually care about human life price control" or something. They can use it as marketing ammo as well. Proving they actually care is good for business.

FrankenPC··on How a $2.7B air-defense system became a 'zombie' program
So, when engineering crazy things, many valuable lessons are learned that could help us all. Do we get any of that knowledge for this product WE paid for?
FrankenPC··on “We don’t do autism”
Side note: There are private companies who will MRI any part of your body no questions asked. 15 years ago it was 1000$ for a full body MRI. Sections were much cheaper.

Point being, how hard would it be to take pre-existing MRI plates to a specialist and buy an hour of their time to just take a look?

Well...my mind's blown. Astounding technology advancement.
FrankenPC··on Einstein’s Parable of Quantum Insanity
Well..not really.

"But pilot wave theory could still be important, because it has a different conceptual formulation, so if you set out to modify the theory, you get different modifications. In that sense, it is a good new idea. I personally think that you can produce a truncation of pilot-wave which doesn't coincide with ordinary quantum mechanics, but which is mostly the same as quantum mechanics when you are dealing with only a few particles only slightly entangled. In this case, you need the wavefunction to be a complicated function of the hidden-variables (the particle positions) which only obeys the Schrodinger equation approximately. This type of thing is a true modification of quantum mechanics, but I was never 100% sure that it works. I described the idea roughly in my answer to one of 'tHoofts questions on physics stackexchange."

FrankenPC··on Computer Sciences Courses That Don't Exist, but Should
Reminds me of a question a help desk person asked me about 20 years ago. They were having all kinds of problems printing word docs from this new windows 95 PC. I was busy at the time so rather than educate them on the nature of WYSIWYG I just told them to update/repair the graphics driver. It worked and they thought I was a god.

It's hard to create a course on the interconnections of everything. The best course I ever took was a Cisco IOS programming course. That included protocol analysis, debugging routers, switches, etc. I'm not a network layer programmer. But what I learned about how everything works together has helped me solve complex problems ranging from Kerberos authentication issues to finding duplicate DHCP servers on the same network. Without this knowledge, I would have to hire experts and waste a ton of time and money to get to the end goal which is a functioning product.

FrankenPC··on The lottery is a tax, an inefficient, regressive, and exploitative tax
It's not a tax. It's a statistics lesson for dummies.
FrankenPC··on IBM has built a digital rat brain that could power tomorrow’s smartphones
This is really interesting to me. I make money with OOP in the commercial arena. But I'm considering getting out and changing careers. Can you summarize WHY FP is superior? In this context is fine. If I'm asking too much, do you have a good paper which explains the necessity of FP to a OOP-head?
FrankenPC··on Non-Compete Can Be Imposed Mid-Employment with No New Consideration
I work in California and hired a lawyer to nullify a non-compete clause. The company backed off when my lawyer cited case law that basically says if a company attempts to clamp down on a skill you had pre-existing to employment, ALL previous contracts become null and void. California views this kind of corporate behavior as a form of enslavement.
FrankenPC··on Non-Compete Can Be Imposed Mid-Employment with No New Consideration
Doesn't this require a signature? If so, depending on the life circumstances, couldn't this be perceived as signing a contract under duress?
FrankenPC··on A 390-year-old bonsai tree survived an atomic bomb
I've seen the miniature fruit trees. They gave their all to crank out a single mini fruit which wasn't so mini compared to the bonsai.
FrankenPC··on A 390-year-old bonsai tree survived an atomic bomb
I too am fascinated with bonsai. It's not only aesthetically pleasing, but also really interesting from a purely biological perspective.
FrankenPC··on Jensen's Device
Thanks for the explanation. In general, is this considered an anti-pattern? In other words, It's interesting but not advisable to consider in production programming?
