FranOntanaya··on Real-time, river sections downstream of sewage discharges from storm overflows
To be fair to our ancestors, their sewage composition was much simpler than the exotic chemical cocktail we send down the drain nowadays.

I assume they don't want wild animals that are ridden with diseases to end in something like cattle feed more than unavoidable.

Clicklock is much nicer in Windows than the awkward methods I've found so far with Linux.
FranOntanaya··on AeroSpace is an i3-like tiling window manager for macOS
I use an ultra wide screen and do both coding and video operations so I'm always having side by side layouts mixed in with tabbed windows.

One typical case is navigating a file manager to grab files that I need to drag and drop on a web UI, or folder/URI slug names I need to keep copying back and forth to use on a workflow.

Another is watching stdout/stderr of a running script and a log tail at the same time.

Sometimes I have tabs of web, file manager and some other app on one side and a terminal on the other as terminal commands are the glue of a workflow.

Or I'll be screening a video on the left and doing edits on the right. Or keeping notes open on the side during a conference call.

Sometimes I'll only have one window in a virtual desktop and ultrawide is too much, so I just have an idle terminal window as padding.

Not having to hunt around for windows then hunting for their edges helps when I'm constantly opening, closing and sizing terminals, file managers and so on and so forth. It simply is faster with tiles.

FranOntanaya··on Mars rover mission will use pioneering nuclear power source
It's still boosting the science profile of the mission to use it as test bed for Americium. There's a lot of science to be done in the Kuiper belt and further out where longevity may matter eventually simply because we wouldn't be sending repeat missions to each dwarf planet out there anytime soon.
FranOntanaya··on Reasons not to take Lumina's anticavity probiotic
Very much this. Specially if any relative has to watch their weight or sugar intake and a lot of "No sugar added" products are getting in the house, a very worrying amount of them are loaded with maltitol and its -ol friends. People don't understand why they are felling sick eating "health food" and go through a substantial amount of grief.
FranOntanaya··on Selling 'Ghost in the Shell'
I never felt it was any different. The 95 movie was always the more mystical take, for story the SAC series was better, specially 2nd GIG.
FranOntanaya··on Shattered Pixel Dungeon is an open-source traditional roguelike dungeon crawler
So many hours trying to farm cube slimes to get rare items in that game. I loved it.
FranOntanaya··on Regex character "$" doesn't mean "end-of-string"
I don't think anyone that writes regex would feel specially challenged by using the Alt+ | Ctrl+Shift+u key combos for unicode entry. Having to escape less things in a pattern would be nice.

You can configure the window icons directly in the config file.

FranOntanaya··on Hurried Thoughts: You're Wrong About Tidal-Locking
I do remember Earth exceptionalism being pervasive, from the first satellite views of Mars up till maybe Galileo's pictures of Europa.

Even today still get that feeling when it comes to the topic of liquid water, where people will point at the lack of meaningful atmospheres and declare places like Mars or any other body holding ices as too different to not be dry, when you just need the right ground temperature gradient and some trapped ice.

FranOntanaya··on Why are there so many methane satellites?
I'd think it's also useful for economists and investors trying to factor activity from other countries without any middle-people obfuscating the data. That kind of information will always find funding.
FranOntanaya··on 'I should not have written 'A Clockwork Orange''
I disagree with the disagreements. We look naturally at the shock value of the violence but harshly reject the shock of a character turning around out of the blue. We never give "good" the privilege of irrationality.
FranOntanaya··on Japan's first-ever soft lunar landing with SLIM spacecraft [video]
Seismic sensors would definitely benefit from this. Scientists have to get clever to estimate the direction of events when using a single sensor like on the InSight lander.
FranOntanaya··on James Webb Space Telescope captures high-resolution image of Uranus
I think you can barely see the outer ring (R/2003 U 1) in the bottom left.

I really hope we get a better look at the moons of Neptune and Uranus sooner than later. They seem to have lots of interesting history.

FranOntanaya··on Mars has a layer of molten rock inside
In the long run an overheated planet Venus style is much harder to deal with than a cold, nearly airless one. Anything that triggered mass plant death and decomposition could do.
FranOntanaya··on My favourite API is a zipfile on the European Central Bank's website
The main thing for me is that the data isn't broken down in a way that ends you having to make a thousand requests and collate them. If the client is expected to be able to pull the whole set of data, provide the whole set. There's other ways to rate limit.
FranOntanaya··on A TLS 1.3 stack written in Visual Basic 6
I don't speak for everyone, but in the end what bothered me of VB6 was that it was simply very slow. But nothing compares with the joy of loading some obscure .dll and finding out you now had some neat and fully functional component ready to lay out in your app.
FranOntanaya··on FFmpeg 6.0
Nostalgia moment with the CrystalHD decoder deprecation. That came along the Intel Atom netbooks, one of the few ways we had to bump a bit their austere performance.
FranOntanaya··on Why 23.976 and not 24 FPS? (2016)
One bewildering thing that I think isn't covered there is that old Quicktime video was specified as 23.98 simply because they were using fixed precision. An apparently harmless issue until you tried reading metadata and converting frame rates assuming that just doing the maths would work.
FranOntanaya··on A mysterious voice is haunting American Airlines’ in-flight announcements
Could it be from a throat mic of someone doing fighter plane training with high G maneuvers? Maybe it just so happens to overlap some frequency.
FranOntanaya··on Fire extinguished at Ukraine nuclear power plant, Europe's largest
Nuclear costs should factor in the need to run a larger military budget to make up for their vulnerability in a conflict.
FranOntanaya··on Life at 800 MHz
I still have my Samsung NC10, had it running an IRC bot until recently in power save mode with no fans. Opening a modern version of a browser is pretty revealing about how heavier the web has become though.
FranOntanaya··on PHP is worth learning and using
PHP pays my bills. I don't use it for web backends, it runs automations for a number of operations that glue APIs together, as well as exporting some custom document types and sorting out workflows/data.

Simplistically speaking, all I have to do is stick the path hashbang at the top of a php file, follow with the business logic and run it as a shell script. Clears any urgent ad-hoc request within a day.

FranOntanaya··on The James Webb Space Telescope has passed the final mission analysis review
Most rockets these days are pretty reliable. Ariane 5 only had one partial failure in 20 years I believe.
