FractalNerve··on Basscss – Low-level CSS toolkit
I initially thought, hey great that's something you simply include and have a base layout that's a great starting point for any type of project, but after looking through the document I realized that it comes with as many "modules" as bootstrap or other full-blown "css-frameworks". Wish they just made a better and more consize and proven {normalize.css reset.css base.css}

Some of the styles are nice and ready to copy though, ie. the table styles, but not sure what the intention of this project is.

--

→ What lightweight css-starter-kit would you choose for any of your upcoming projects? Other than reset.css or normalize.css of course :)

I don't like bootstrap and similar, because it's just too large and most people end up using all of the classes and the whole javascript instead of only the stuff they need. Bootstrap is absolutely great for projects that quickly need a whole "UI Theme" fix.

Does someobody have a nice printable version that doesn't look ugly when printed? I would love to hang this onto our wall in the office.

Not sure if making this into an Infographic is less work than creating a css style that allows printing it correctly.

FractalNerve··on Ask HN: Anyone using a “no hands” setup for programming?
I think he used the python NLTK Kit. http://www.nltk.org/

I don't think that Dragon Naturaly Speaking is the best NLP tool out there, it appears to me that Stanford's CoreNLP is much more accurate, albeit being a little slower and more ressource hungry due to Java I think.

FractalNerve··on Virtual-dom – A Virtual DOM and diffing algorithm
I start to see .io domains associated with a lot of cool projects, which makes me ask myself "Where do you buy these io domains?". Is it cheaper than were I looked? I think it was about >=65Eur/anno

Last time I looked the prices offered for grabbing one I was schocked with extraordinary high costs for one domain.

Hi, I've thought a classroom with master students in computer science Mithril and we've found that the tutorials on your Homepage aren't easy to follow. A girl for example wanted to follow the tutorial 1:1 but found herself stuck, we know that the code at the bottom of the page worked, however I would heartly support you and your framework more, if there were easier to follow tutorials, more examples, integrations into build systems etc.

The topic of my talk and excercises was building & scaling modern web apps. That's we used:

React, Yeoman, Mimosa.io, Swagger, Strongloop, Redhat OpenShift, Microsoft Azure and VisualOps.io to quickly build a build framework, deployment targets and a workflow for a 'large' sample application and develop modules for the web app that consumes other APIs.

We've also used Mimosa.io and Yeoman and have followed the tutorials on their websites and were very pleasantly surprised. Especially the tutorial on Yeoman's site was stellar. I think integrating Mithril with both of these frameworks with one empty and one opiniated boilerplate to quickstart into coding without having to create the js/css/html files by hand would be more practical to follow by total newcomers. It would also fit the keyword "modern" in my talk more than having to do it by hand.

Thank you for taking the time to read this far! You're invited to a cool and chilled beer (or coffe), when you have the pleasure to visit Germany :)

That's super interesting, I didn't know that he took a journey from C++ → Java → Python → Javascript → Go.

But Why Go? [1]

There are so many interesting programming languages, I'm curious why he chose go. And where do you have your information about high-profile Node.js users migrating to Go, if I may ask.

I've not used the go language yet, but a school friend was a fan of it a few years (3?) ago and started learning it. He was positive with about it, but went on with life and uses php and nodejs mainly now. However can't wait for an ArchLinux PKGFILE :)

FractalNerve··on Ask HN: Are there any tools you don't use/support for ethical reasons?
I also stopped using any of Google's services, because their products are made so smart, that when you realize why it's free, you've already given up too much of your data into the wrong hands.

Enabling the location services on your phone in example, asks you only once to "increase" the precision by using using cellular, gps and nearby WiFi SSIDs. That's because Google lost a lawsuit for illegaly collecting a database of all SSIDs. Now they let you do it.

But think about it, how can they improve the precision of your phone's location services, when GPS + Celular already are accurate within 1-2m? I mean nearby SSID's won't magically give you military precision and more precision than what you have with GPS+celular alone is not even required.

I'm using https://swisscows.ch instead of http://google.com, because it's more secure, faster, less personalized, equally strong in features and provides me with more accurate results than duckduckgo.com + it has semantic filtering tiles that I really started liking.

FractalNerve··on A standard for building APIs in JSON
I'm a fan of swagger, especially because it's not tied to one language and helps the developer to design his API in an easy way. The tools provided for describing your API using the Swagger spec is really fascinating.

This tries to standardize API transports, which doesn't make a sense to me, because there is no need for that. If you are going to develop an API with (open) SDK clients that support consuming your services, then I don't need to care for your API transport to be written in JSON-API. Especially making transports human readable appears to be a waste of ressources in my eyes. Those API's are meant to be consumed by machines and debugging can and should be done with tools, not by enforcing a standard.

What Git workflow do you have? Is it the something simple like testing, staging, production or is it much more customized for your needs? Recently I got very interested in that, since we evaluated Phabricator and Gerrit[1] (we choose Gerrit btw.). Ok this had to be asked: Do you send commits via mail too? :)

Thank you nitrogen. I wasn't criticizing HN or it's readers.

Tl;Dr: Simply put, I just felt powerless over the suspicion driven hunt for people who might imply that they belong to a party, a side an ideology, a religion, or whatever is the 'currently trending enemy' of the day. Thus I wanted to reflect my feelings on that, because it's something that's not said often enough.

--- For those who still can't put me into drawer: I don't belong to a religion, don't choose a political party or take any active position in current or past political movements.

I think it was a depressive moment, one where I realized that the war is not only out there and far from where I live, but here and now. That it affects all of us. And is most frustratingly causing a split in once finely cooperating individuals and an ersatz valve for undirected agony on the other side. I've read comments from people in different forums who attack each other for tangential comments. (I mostly lurk around and only enjoy reading interesting or insightful comments)

The increasingly restricting laws that take the freedom we took for granted is a side-effect of our wars in foreign countries, but it's also causing a heat up of anti-surveillance protesters who'd like to reduce the symptoms of the war that targets them.

I couldn't voice otherwise it may not be one of my most insightful comments. Maybe it was an neede. I'm sorry that it doesn't mean nothing for viraptor or byEngineer. That's all.

I feel powerless over the ignorant political movement of people who, from my PoV, act like drones controlled by the media firing their ammunition and causing collateral damage. Be it Pro-/Contro Ukraine/Russia/America or Israel. We were good to each other, helpful and understanding and just because of a few leading politicians who can't go and fight each other on their own (without an army of soldiers dying for them), all of our lives shall suffer? I'm surely too blinded by the delusions of world-peace to come to grasp how people really are, but I hope to be misunderstanding before I give up my faith and let them destroy what we have build together.

I fear forums whom I enjoyed becoming places of distrust, hatred and battle space against the other political 'side'. Where admins and moderators use their given powers to torture the unwanted. I have only recently seen an Isreali woman marrying an Iranian man on television loving each other. And don't think that all people agree to what the politicians have to say.

We are better. If all fails, I still believe that: “Chaos often breeds life, while order breeds habit.” – Henry Adams Regarding 'Chaos' - this seem like a good read: http://www.halexandria.org/dward165.htm

Leading countries co-operate to limit capital-flow to Russia and this albeit sounding implausible to me, has direct influence on the economic liquidity. Implausible because I don't know how it would be possible for countries and companies to co-operate on such a scale on a capital market, where most notably personal profit leads the market over political decisions. I would be much more curious on which companies initiated the financial war and how they orchestrated their strategies, than the actual outcome, from the PoV of a mathematically and technologically fascinated guy.

have you read that book and would you recommend it over "The Fractal Geometry of Nature by Benoit Mandelbrot (1982) [1]?

I'm asking because I bought the latter and would like to know if this book provides more recent information on the topic.

Thank you.

FractalNerve··on Lennart Poettering on the state of open source communities
Hello!

Bully or not, please be friendlier. I will start and hope you're following.

I've seen a few interviews with Mr. Pöttering and I admire his cleverness and his ambitious fight for a better GNU/Linux. I am not a fan of his person, nor his speech, but this is not the time, nor place to call him an egocentric elitist. There is a reason for everything, I too would become such a person to protect myself from the everyday threatening and hatred. Things like that break a person!! Keep this in mind, we as Engineers are especially very susceptible and sensible to attacks, because we have sharpened and trained our minds to try to find a meaning behind every action.

Remember Aaron Schwartz! He couldn't bear the weight on his shoulders anymore. He was not a soldier, he was not a criminal, he was like you and me a person that deserves to be respected. Souls break apart and suicide isn't rare among our people. You shall keep this in mind, when you speak up without a filter.

Whenever I've been complaining about something about Linux, I was told to improve it, or shut up. That was a culture that I thought as very unfriendly, but it was nonetheless logical. I could pass that along to you, but you have an opinion about Systemd and Pulseaudio that I simply cannot fathom as authentic or fact based.

ALSA did not allow controlling the volume of different applications. Period. PulseAudio made it happen!! Yes it's not perfect, but it's opensource and maybe it'll be as good as the software you want to use on your own computer.

With Systemd systems are starting up much much faster than tweaks to other init systems can provide. You're comparing Apples to Oranges, when you say, but if you disable everything then and only then my favorite init system is faster than systemd. Not everything in systemd is smart or good, but it fixes a problem that people have neglected for too many years. Systemd changed that!

Let's not discuss what is better or not, you have to be a Software-Architect and not an untrained Software-Developer to discuss such things in detail without being a hypocrite, desinformative or misleading. My impression was that even though the ideas of Mr. Pöttering were brilliant, his Software-Architecture skills are his Achilles heel. That's what he needs more training in.

Thank you for taking the time reading this.

FractalNerve··on Germany’s great tuition fees U-turn
Hello Bane, I'm from Germany and have read all your comments on this thread, because they piqued my interest and I admired your ambitious fight to reach beyond what live offered you. There was one thing that I really couldn't understand and I've heard a voice in my head that said: "And then he considered moving to Norway, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands or similar to graduate much cheaper and then return with a masters degree to his family. He would then be able to upgrade his family's from the poor class to the upper-middle-class". But you didn't. Why?

Btw. tuition fees were 500€ and you paid about 280€ for the University every 6 months.

While I've the great chance to ask the right person, would you mind telling me how a German student with a masters degree in Computer Science is seen in the USA. I mean what common prejudices do exist, are the prejudices in favor or against one. No worries, I'm very open minded about that =) I am at my late 20's and have been thinking that it would be a great decision to move to the USA. Would you recommend moving to the USA and if so, which state and city should I migrate to?

What would I earn there without work experience other than as IT-freelancer? And would that be by other americans as a lot or normal pay? I heard that the health system is very expensive over there. Is there a reasonable number of salary that I'd have to earn to not have to worry about that kind of problems? This question might sound weird, but in Germany you only pay 80€/monthly into the state-issued health-insurance and that easily covers most of the regular stuff. By that I mean to say that you don't worry about getting broke, if you have to get an operation.

I am not affiliated in any way with the offer or the company, but I'm interested into the topic and thought that there might be people who can afford this and have serious interest in it. Unfortunately it's too expensive for me personally, but there are people who go to professional conferences like TED, or are employed as an iOS developer and might find this worth it.
