FractalHQ··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
How sure are you that you aren’t also just a (more advanced) “next word predictor”. Pattern recognition plays a fundamental role in intelligence.
FractalHQ··on Microsoft's AI Bing also generated factual errors at launch
Copilot mostly spews distracting nonsense, but when it’s useful (like with repetitive boilerplate where it doesn’t have to “think” much) it’s really nice. But if that’s the bar, I don’t think were ready for something like search, which is much more difficult and important to get right for the average person to get more good than harm from it.
FractalHQ··on How Spotify's podcast bet went wrong
It’s funny because I listen to music quietly in the background while my podcasts play, so I can’t use Spotify for podcasts _because_ they’re in the same app.
FractalHQ··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
Sveltekit and Supabase. I can have a portable, auto scaling serverless app running with auth and user accounts / CI CD in like 3 cli commands for $0.
FractalHQ··on A mental health tech company ran an AI experiment on real users
The irony is that slurs gain their potency from their novelty which is emboldened by censorship and hindered by exposure. If taboo language was used freely and often, it would lose its shock value and subsequently its power to harm people sensitive to it.
FractalHQ··on Constrain – Interactive figures using declarative constraint solving
Canvas is generally more performant so I imagine it could be a better fit depending on how complex things get. Very rarely have I encountered the performance limitations of svg, though it has happened.
FractalHQ··on For your next side project, make a browser extension
Svelte / Sveltekit also works great and is a bit more lightweight / performant while being easier / faster to develop with.

I have an implementation on GitHub for my personal hybrid bookmark-manager / hackernews-reader newtab extension[0]. Its still a wip but i use the website version[1] daily as it doesn’t need to be installed and can still be set as my newtab page (warning as I’ve never opened it on mobile).

FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Is TypeScript worth it?
Sorry, “real life project” was a poor metric. I suppose I meant anything where bugs would have a negative impact on the world — either a business or individual. Realistically though, anything that I’m expected to spend more than 20 minutes working on. I’m quite the extremist when it comes to languages and highly opinionated in general.

I compulsively rewrite JS into TS and 100% of the repos I work on have “allow-js” set to false in the tsconfig. It seems to be fueled by the same “OCD” I get when designing UI, organizing css, or making music for example.

FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Can you crowdfund the compute for GPT?
Sheepit[0] does this with peoples Blender files, it’s awesome. I use it often and donate gpu time when I’m not using it.

FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Is TypeScript worth it?
You couldn’t pay me to work with Vanilla JS on any real life project. It feels like going back to horse and buggy.

The biggest things I wouldn’t be able to live without:

- the self-documenting nature of Typescript code (I instantly know what a function accepts and returns by hovering over it).

- the comprehensive auto complete my ide gets (saves hundreds of trips to the docs / source code per day).

- the incredible productivity gains when refactoring (change one thing, instantly get notified of all 30 places in the codebase that change introduced errors and clean them up in minutes).

FractalHQ··on 3D in CSS
Those animations are extremely janky on iOS (unsurprisingly)
FractalHQ··on Why is the JavaScript ecosystem like this?
I love Typescript
FractalHQ··on Why Google and Apple work to snuff out the mobile web
To be fair, this would be true if you just emerged from a 20 year coma.
FractalHQ··on Auth.js Authentication for the Web
As someone who dislikes Vue and Angular but loves Solid and Svelte, I understand your reservations but I have to ask- have you ever built something non-trivial with Svelte? The list of DX improvements using TS in a framework like Svelte that gets out of your way without a labyrinth of gotchas and framework specific footguns and api patterns born through a decade of tech debt is nothing to scoff at.
FractalHQ··on Auth.js Authentication for the Web
SvelteKit gives tangible speed and DX advantages over React that can be measured in less LOC.

FractalHQ··on User Interface Design: Rules of Thumb
For booleans I tend to prefer using “Enable/Disable”. In this example, “Disable Flash” with a checkbox that is clearly in an “Enabled” state can reduce ambiguity. Alternatively, displaying the state and using tooltips that describe the action can be great, but falls apart on mobile devices.
FractalHQ··on Programs are dead, and JavaScript has killed them
Why has nobody mentioned that you can (and should) just lock your dependency versions…?
FractalHQ··on SvelteKit 1.0
Sveltekit has been transformational for me. I can't express enough gratitude to the legendary team who made this happen. Congrats guys!!!
FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Is the weaponisation of ChatGPT now inevitable?
Surely we shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, no? Trying to control this is surely futile — how long until a company like Stability AI releases an open source, uncensored version of GPT?
FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Anyone else suffering from tinnitus?
I just ignore it and let it fade out of my awareness. I forgot it’s even a thing (until now…)!

I’ve always had it bad because of my career as a musician / producer / audio engineer.

If I do happen to become aware of it for whatever reason, it rarely takes long for for it to drift into the background again.

FractalHQ··on Adobe at 40
Adobe, please allow me stop your spyware from automatically spinning up a dozen processes every time my computer starts even when I don’t plan on opening one of your astonishingly terrible applications. Thanks!
FractalHQ··on Apple blocks Coinbase Wallet
Progressive Web Apps can run offline thanks to Service Workers. I’m not sure how reliable or feature-complete the iOS/Safari service worker API is (likely half-baked and bug-ridden like the rest of their browser APIs), but in theory it can be installed once and run offline just fine.
FractalHQ··on Coding Curves
A live, interactive REPL for coding these would take a weekend to implement and add orders of magnitude to the accessibility and UX of this resource.
FractalHQ··on Thoughts on Arc Browser
On MacOS I use the fullscreen window shortcut (followed by browser fullscreen shortcut) to hide the UI for a more Vivaldi-esque experience.
FractalHQ··on Thoughts on Arc Browser
Edge is nice but it’s extremely invasive. Brave is a great drop-in replacement that prioritizes privacy without sacrificing features that people love from chromium browsers.
FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Why JavaScript experts tend to not use TypeScript?
It’s currently private unfortunately but the client is considering open sourcing it once were done using it in a few upcoming projects! Will ping you when that happens.
FractalHQ··on Helix: Post-Modern Text Editor
I’m the same way- my MacBook trackpad is closer to my fingers than the escape key! Not to mention, in VSCode I can do anything with the command palette with cmd+P without the need for separate modes and without the need to memorize a million shortcuts.

If I know the first letter or two of the command, then it’s only 3 keystrokes away. For example, “Evaluate Math Expression” is “cmd+shift+p”+”ev”+”enter”. The command palette also provides great additional explorability with the fuzzy searchable menu + descriptions.

This is a far superior workflow because I have access to every possible command in the editor / installed extensions (very easily mapped to my own shortcuts of I want) without the need to memorize anything. I can even reverse-search commands by typing the shortcut and it will tell me the commands bound to that shortcut.

I could be missing something, but Vim and family feels like a huge step backwards in workflow for me.

Just use Brave (and don’t press any crypto related buttons if they offend you for some contrived reason)
FractalHQ··on Ask HN: Why JavaScript experts tend to not use TypeScript?
Thanks for saying this.. I use TS religiously and haven’t been able to go back since diving in, but man is complex Typescript hard! I’m building a DAW right now with pretty large interconnected, dynamic systems and the TS is getting really mind bending with all of the layers of inheritance and generics. A functional architecture as opposed to this OOP one would probably make life easier… but those decisions were mostly out of my control early on.

That being said, as a Svelte user, I really wish Rich would stop dragging his feet on Typescript as much as he does (no TS in markup is a huge bummer). I can’t complain too much though.. the Svelte Compiler is a magnificent beast and I couldn’t write it let alone contribute to it in a meaningful way. If leaving Typescript to the other maintainers helps him be more productive, so be it.
