FractalHQ··on Do Animals Know That They Will Die?
The answer was no, probably not.

Beautiful story!

FractalHQ··on They're Breaking Every Retirement Rule to Be Off Now, Not Later
You need extra money to save it.
FractalHQ··on DevHub.app – Developer Utilities for macOS
I think they meant a shell command that talks to an LLM, like typing ?? into a terminal that has Copilot CLI installed:

?? convert images to webp and upload them to s3
FractalHQ··on Ask HN: How do you manage your prompts in ChatGPT?
I use Claude and Cursor because they’re so much better and don’t require any fancy prompting to not completely suck.

For snippets, I use the system built into Raycast. For non-programming questions, I just ask Perplexity as I’d ask a person and its orders of magnitude better than Google or any single LLM.

FractalHQ··on Tell HN: Burnout is bad to your brain, take care
Every-time burnout comes up, I can’t help but notice that people are describing my default state as someone with severe ADHD and a fundamental dopamine deficiency. I can relate so much to every reported symptom that it becomes very difficult for me to frame burnout in the context of my own experience. Medication, exercise, healthy food, and cold showers are the tools I’ve always used to get myself close enough to a neurotypical background to be able to do things like teach myself how to code.

I feel for you, and I wish you a swift recovery! And if you get Covid, SLEEP AND CHUG WATER like your life depends on it, or you may get permanent burnout in the form of long covid (my worst nightmare), without the hope of recovery that you currently have to look forward to and strive towards :)

FractalHQ··on Show HN: Wealthfolio: Private, open-source investment tracker
Are there any you can recommend?
FractalHQ··on Poor man's signals – tiny vanilla JavaScript signals implementation
These are Observables, as seen in Svelte and RXJS. When talking about reactivity primitives / patterns, Observables and Signals are two of the most common / prominent ones. So in this context, they are closer to being 100% different things.
FractalHQ··on Show HN: Repaint – a WebGL based website builder
I had the same thought regarding the renderer — the worst case scenario would be a complex design with correct code that renders incorrectly in the app. I’d sacrifice frames per second just to avoid ever being in that position.

Regarding the text editor — I can’t stand using any editor that doesn’t have the hotkeys and multi cursor editing that I’m used to. I even stopped using note apps and just use vscode anytime I need to author more than a paragraph of text.

I worry that a clever image caching strategy and the Monaco npm package would be a better alternative for many reasons — especially considering the role that easy access to Devtools plays in the design process, which you also lose with a canvas.

FractalHQ··on Show HN: Hestus – AI Copilot for CAD
Surely all of GitHub is “enough training data”
FractalHQ··on Athletes and musicians pursue virtuosity in fundamental skills
I would argue the process of producing a song falls under “practice” of the craft.
FractalHQ··on Artifacts are now generally available
All of these “make me stereotypical app that you’ve seen thousands of examples of online” that people are using to prove how great AI is at programming now is actually just a shittier version of copy paste where your clipboard randomly changes arbitrary parts of the text before pasting it.
FractalHQ··on Ask HN: What's your favourite startup that didn't work out?
I still use this for private family group chat and it’s such a fantastic piece of software. It’s really in a league of its own with all the features it has. I was heart broken when Zoom ate them up and shit them out like a proper American ~~business~~ anti-competitive tumor.
FractalHQ··on Chrome is entrenching third-party cookies that will mislead users
Brave browser is such an obvious win for me… chrome + privacy. None of the bugs and missing features that come with Safari or Firefox.
FractalHQ··on We built an open-source UIPath alternative that solves problem in all RPA
What is RPA
FractalHQ··on 16GB of RAM Could Be the New Minimum in Apple's Upcoming M4 Macs
I’ve had at least 6 MacBooks since age 13 and never once have I cracked a screen… I’ve even dropped them many times and traveled the world with them, sat on them, had drunk people throwing champagne on them…

MacBooks are tanks and their build quality is literally state of the art.

FractalHQ··on I'm tired of fixing customers' AI generated code
This website is so cursed… on mobile it’s constantly layout shifting up and down by an entire screen height every ~0.3 seconds. I’m not sure how to feel.
FractalHQ··on Show HN: Hotshot – 4 Person Team Builds a State of the Art Video Model
Wait why does the title say you built “Sora”? Isn’t that the OpenAI project?
FractalHQ··on Show HN: Uisual – Free Tailwind CSS Components and Templates (No JavaScript)
Nice! I still think making your own utility classes is far better in many ways than using Tailwind, but that isn’t the point of this learning project. Congrats!
FractalHQ··on VanillaJSX.com
That’s how I felt going from Astro to Sveltekit, but that’s a shorter distance to travel.
FractalHQ··on Oops.js
No types is a non-starter 100% of the time. I wouldn’t use a library for something like an undo manager though — the core is quite simple and you’ll want full control.
FractalHQ··on Google Gemini 1.5 Pro leaps ahead in AI race, challenging GPT-4o
GPT-4o was left in the dust by Claude months ago…
FractalHQ··on We Should Stop Using JavaScript According to Douglas Crockford (2023)
I’m glad I found your comment at the bottom of this thread, because while I avoid JS like the plague, I love Typescript, and I can build what feels like anything for any platform faster than many people believe is possible when I quote them.

I just need some more advanced features from C# / some runtime types… not a new language altogether. But even still, of all the languages I’ve tried, I prefer Typescript and its flexibility, power, and ecosystem by a decent margin.

I must be missing a hell of a lot because I find it very hard to relate to anyone in this thread.

FractalHQ··on Tauri 2.0 Release Candidate
I converted my Sveltekit PWA to a desktop app by running `tauri init`. I was amazed that it just worked.
FractalHQ··on An experiment in UI density created with Svelte
Also a Svelte component just takes JavaScript… so you can just create and use a canvas and interact with the DOM normally.
FractalHQ··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
Was nice when we had anti trust laws. This is gonna bite us all so hard as a society in the coming decades.
FractalHQ··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
I support this behavior as the only correct reaction.
FractalHQ··on Node.js adds experimental support for TypeScript
Source maps and build files are automatically generated when bundling which you need to do with or without typescript… so this argument always confuses me. There is no tangible downside in my experience.. either way it’s just typing “pnpm build”.
FractalHQ··on Will Figma become an awkward middle ground?
Strange… my iPhone renders it instantly with 0 issues.
FractalHQ··on Show HN: TargetJ – New JavaScript framework that can animate anything
Does this really have no types? How can something like this be usable in 2024 with no types?
FractalHQ··on How to Get Voters the Facts They Need Without a Trump Jan. 6 Trial
