FourHand451··on The Overview Effect – William Shatner's Words After Returning from Space
I've never quite understood why a lot of people found launching the car to be so egregious. The first launch of a rocket routinely carries a "test mass" of some kind, which I understood to usually be a boring hunk of metal, or at least something that wouldn't be a great loss if the rocket failed. Putting a car on there didn't seem like a frivolous waste, as it would be unlikely for a customer to put forth a serious payload for the debut Falcon Heavy launch.

Yes, it was kind of meme-y and marketing-y. But it is a business, and I also don't think being serious about something means you can never make a joke about it.

FourHand451··on Mailable Live Animals
I worked in the campus post office while in college, and one of the most memorable days during my time there was when a box of live bees was delivered. It was about the size of a small loaf of bread, wooden on four sides and covered by screens on the other two.

We set them aside from the other boxes, near the counter where students would come to pick up their packages. It sat there buzzing quietly all day and generating a lot of surprised looks. Pretty neat.

FourHand451··on Powers of Hearing: The Military Science of Sound Location
I can appreciate the practical considerations that require setting a precise time for an armistice to go into effect. However, looking at that first image in the article of the readout from sound ranging equipment just before and after the armistice, the thing that stands out to me is how pointless the last couple of artillery shells before a scheduled cease-fire seem.

I suppose without the benefit of hindsight you could argue that one side or the other might have gained a slight advantage with those last shots if hostilities restarted. But knowing the outcome, it just feels really bizarre to think about those last moments.

FourHand451··on Alcohol-free beer is fizzing
Most grocery stores near me (in MN) have added separate liquor stores that are attached, but separated. But then they also still sell 3.2 beer in the main portion of the store. Seems weird to me. I assume it will disappear if they think of something better to put on the shelf.
FourHand451··on Alcohol-free beer is fizzing
Minnesota is the last state in the US (as far as I'm aware) where 3.2 beer is common. It's sold in supermarkets and gas stations where liquor laws mandate that beer sold in these types of stores must be at most 3.2% alcohol.

One state's worth of demand seems awfully small to me for the big brewing companies to keep bothering to produce 3.2 versions of their products. However that's assuming the legal climate is the main driver for the demand. Maybe the growing interest in NA or low alcohol content beers will lead them to increase availability of 3.2 beers, or market them more.

There, there!
FourHand451··on Julian Assange: The Man Who Knew Too Much
Even if you assume that Assange just released all information that was available to him, I still think it's hard to argue he's completely blameless. It seems naive to think that you wouldn't be made a tool of propagandists, even if you didn't endeavor to be a propagandist yourself.
FourHand451··on Intel: Advances in silicon photonics can break the I/O “power wall”
Why do you think it might not be a good thing in practice?
FourHand451··on Launch HN: Jiga (YC W21) – Faster custom parts for hardware products
My experience is mostly with machined parts. In that context, I find it most helpful to know the part can be fully machined, or if not, where exactly the finished part will differ from the model. I'm sure this can be communicated in a direct conversation with a supplier, but I find it more convenient if this information can be part of the quote.

I'll be interested to see how your offering progresses!

FourHand451··on Launch HN: Jiga (YC W21) – Faster custom parts for hardware products
Do you plan to develop more detailed manufacturability feedback for quoting? For example, too-thin walls or areas that may not be cleanly machined on a CNC part.

Also, any plans to add injection molding services in the future?
