ForestCritter··on In every reported mistaken arrest using facial recognition, person was Black
It is extremely difficult to get definition on a black cat no matter what technology you use. For that matter, it is harder to see definition on a black cat with the human eye. Just like it is harder to see definition in the dark. Its called color theory, refraction, absorption. Its also difficult to get depth and definition without reflective distortion on metal jewellery. Are we racist against metallics too?
ForestCritter··on If You Want a Car This Heavy, You Should Pay Through the Nose
It also often equates to safer vehicles. Crash safety matters.
ForestCritter··on If You Want a Car This Heavy, You Should Pay Through the Nose
So the least safe your car is, the more you pay. I'll take my crash safety in my volvo station wagon 'little tank' over an 'efficient tin can' any day. I can also haul a trailer which you can't do in light weight cars.
ForestCritter··on Who was the Bell Witch?
Agreed, writers should know their vocabulary.
ForestCritter··on Greg Rutkowski was removed from Stable Diffusion; AI artists brought him back
exactly, if you had never seen Greg's work, you wouldn't be asking for it and would never create it. People want the results of someone elses labor.
ForestCritter··on Greg Rutkowski was removed from Stable Diffusion; AI artists brought him back
The reality is that the really good artists will stop feeding their art into the internet and that will be everybodies loss.
ForestCritter··on The economics of the Birkin bag (2016)
Being both a craftsman and having worked luxury handbag retail, I can tell you right now that I could spot the difference in construction quality and after a couple months of wear, the disatrous difference. I also highly doubt that the 800$ price tag reflects the overhead , advertising, packaging, retail store markup required to run the store and the salary + commission it takes a dedicated salesperson to go through the special order process it takes to sell one of these bags.
ForestCritter··on Ask HN: Why does Firefox have such a low market share anyways?
I moved to Vivaldi, similar reasons. It's built off chromium and has a very nice syncable android app.The clincher for me was a configurable default search.
ForestCritter··on Ask HN: Why does Firefox have such a low market share anyways?
I used Mozilla firefox for close to 20 years, perfectly happy. I was very happy when they made their android app but sadly it was the plague. Then they changed stuff on the desktop and it stopped working the same. I moved on to stuff that works ( not chrome or google). I would say some of it is definitely an engineering problem.
ForestCritter··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
Cougars, wolves, coyotes. eagles, snakes (venomous and constrictors), hawks, and owls are natural predators of cats. Their populations have been decimated mostly by loss of habitat (same with birds). Peronnally I'd much rather be overrun by feral cats than rats any given day.
ForestCritter··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
You are the owner of a domesticated species. Feral cats are part of natures food chain and natural balance. Without them there would be no stopping the rodent population. Not liking them being there doesn't make them invasive.
ForestCritter··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
Before they were housecats fed from the grocery store, how many birds did they eat a day? A natural predator does not make their prey extinct.
ForestCritter··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
wild white clover is naturally short and takes up much of the lawn where we are renting. if it weren't for the other random tall stuff we probably wouldn't need to mow at all.
ForestCritter··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
They are very much not fun when they try to take up residence in your house and start eating stuff.
ForestCritter··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
yup, If only we make all but indoor only incarcerated cat pets extinct we will bring balance to the world. It's not like we ever had outdoor cats before when the birds were plentiful. All sarcasm aside, insecticides and loss of habitat are major players in declining bird, bee and insect populations. Natural predators not so much.
ForestCritter··on A third of North America’s birds have vanished
actually, feral cats are what keep mouse, rat, squirrel and chipmunck populations in check and they are on their way to going extinct with the spay and neuter army out there. They do prey on birds when they can catch them but not at any great rate. You state 10%, that is not a massacre when you factor that cats are birds natural predators. Will you be erradicating eagles and falcons because they too prey on birds? Feral cats are not the same as abandoned house cats. Their home is the outdoors, why are we eradicating them to extinction? They are part of natures balance and an important rodent predator.
ForestCritter··on How to Pick a Mate (1946)
women's colleges routinely mixed socially, had dances etc. with men's colleges. To the point that alot of girls went to college to meet eligible men of upper echelons.
ForestCritter··on How to Pick a Mate (1946)
When it comes to retail and factories, singles are much less reliable than parents. From my e xperience at least.
ForestCritter··on How to Pick a Mate (1946)
Marriage is the leading cause of divorce?....without marriage, there is no divorce.
ForestCritter··on Every person on the planet should have their own website
You don't own it, AI does
ForestCritter··on Every person on the planet should have their own website
...so that AI can suck them up...
ForestCritter··on Google says it'll scrape everything online for AI
Artists are expected to have online portfolio's of their work easily accessible for prospective clients and selection committees for any kind of shows or programs that they apply for. It is considered a mark of professionalism. Jpeg portfolios are too large to send like a resume. The very tool artists use to get work is being used to take work away from them.
ForestCritter··on Google says it'll scrape everything online for AI
Artists and writers are supposed to be ok with , why not everybody else?
ForestCritter··on Winning By a Hair
I shaved my legs for years, being a woman because society expects me to. Since I have stopped shaving ( having two full legs of stubble every day is a chore and uncomfortable) I noticed my legs sweat less and are way more comfortable, not to mention no razor burn, no ingrown hair, no prickly missed stubble because I was in a hurry and no more heat rash which I would frequently get on my thighs. Guess we have hair on our legs for a reason, imagine that.
ForestCritter··on Winning By a Hair
hahahaha, nobody has leg hair so thick they can't see a tick.
ForestCritter··on Ask HN: Does anybody not use an adblocker?
My statement is that you can't have it both ways. You can't lay claim to everything a web crawler can get its hands on but then expect privacy when it suits you.
ForestCritter··on Lawsuit claims OpenAI stole 'massive amounts of personal data'
Medical data and data about children have very specific protections. The article says these were accessed without permission. If a lab tech dropped my lab results on the floor and you picked them up, it would not give you the right to store and use my information.
ForestCritter··on Ask HN: Does anybody not use an adblocker?
Going on the internet is going out in public. If AI is allowed to appropriate anything on the internet because it is the public domain and you forfeited privacy when you put it there, then it is all public and you have no right to privacy. Can't have itboth ways.
ForestCritter··on Ask HN: Does anybody not use an adblocker?
It's not any different than paying for newspapers or magazines. People think their subscription price is based on the real costs. Subscriptions pay a small portion of the cost and gaurantee ad revenue. Ad revenue pays for the content. Everybody wants the best content but they would all be screaming if their subscription price bore the full cost of the product.
ForestCritter··on Ask HN: Best search engine alternatives to Google?
wow, just tried this, been researching herbalism, holistic medicine and homestead style farming and this engine is to the point! This stuff has been systematically disapearing from other searches. Thank you
