ForHackernews··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
The outlier valuation is exactly the point! That's why it's a lottery ticket. Some people get $900k, others get $3m, not because of anything they did, not because of improvements made to the property, but just because they picked the lucky patch of dirt.

As discussed in the article, LVT can be implemented in a revenue-neutral way where most homeowners would pay lower property taxes so your handwringing about "yet another tax" is unconvincing.

>the people involved all had to pay money, so presumably it was someone's investment

People pay money for all kinds of things that aren't investments. Ever eat at a restaurant? Ever buy a car?

I agree with parent: houses should be more like cars and less like stocks. Prices should be lower, there should be less debt-financing, and we should end the expectation that home prices will go up endlessly forever.

ForHackernews··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
If you bought a house for 50 grand in 1984 and now it's worth $3 million because you got lucky and happened to buy in the right spot, that's a jackpot in my book. You didn't do anything to create the value of that land: that's what Georgism recognizes.
ForHackernews··on "As a Language Model": Chat Template Switches LLM Self-Referential Voice
Consumers choose cigarettes, too. Especially in aggregate, humans are fallible creatures prone to vices, and our regulations should recognize that an discourage dark patterns in UX.

Sounds like a problem with how you fund your elder care. What about the old folks who weren't lucky enough to win the housing jackpot?
ForHackernews··on "As a Language Model": Chat Template Switches LLM Self-Referential Voice
In my view, these models should never be set up to output first-person "experiential" (from the abstract) language. It's too easy to humans to anthropomorphize software that presents itself as having an identity.

The AI companies have chosen to package LLMs as friendly chatbots because they know that will be engaging for humans, but it's manipulative dark pattern. An honest LLM interface would sound like the computer off Star Trek.

ForHackernews··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
That's not how I remember it. Anthropic didn't grovel sufficiently when the White House/Pentagon wanted to use their models to kill people, so they were penalized for their disloyalty.
ForHackernews··on Classified Estimates Show the NSA Is Paying Billions to Test AI Models
I don't think Trump has ever cared what the US intelligence community has to say about anything. Maybe when AI hacks his TruthSocial.
ForHackernews··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
Maybe? Hard to speculate what they have https://worldstopdatacenters.com/nsa-bumblehive/
ForHackernews··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
Why are they paying? What kind of elite hackers are they? Why haven't they already exfiltrated the weights and running these things on their own giant classified infrastructure?
ForHackernews··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I assure you the French government is large enough and obstinate enough that they will dictate to external parties what inputs they accept.
ForHackernews··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
https://lasuite.numerique.gouv.fr/ is the French government's office suite. I think this can work as long as the devs are responsive to users' needs.

They don't need to reimplement all of MS Office, just the parts they need to serve their constituency.

ForHackernews··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
That's fine, I don't care as long as they are legitimately competing and not colluding to the detriment of consumers/employees/citizens.

The question of a fair tax burden for the ultrarich is a separate (but related) one from "how big is too big?" for megacorps.

ForHackernews··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
> Companies should get kneecapped if their market cap gets too high?

Yes. They should be broken up because competition is good for consumers and society. If we had functional anti-trust enforcement Google would not have a near-monopoly on search ads where they own both the ad inventory and the marketplace where you have to buy those placements.

ForHackernews··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
What? No, exactly the opposite. It's very easy to jam radio signals and much harder to cut wires. There's a reason the drones on the front lines in Ukraine are dragging fibre optic lines these days.
ForHackernews··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
In my experience, Go. It was designed to be idiot-proof. It's very verbose, not very expressive, compiles fast for quick feedback loops, strict autoformatter, plenty of examples in models' training data.
ForHackernews··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
that's one way to skirt e-waste recycling requirements!
ForHackernews··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
lowkey insane that it will end up cheaper to shoot your datacenter into space than get it past the county board permitting process.

ForHackernews··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 Series
The comment you're replying to is implying that in an ARM world nothing is standard, portable, or compatible by default. Think about smartphones: Every single one a bespoke board with bespoke hardware.

In ARMland, there's no such thing as standard OS images you can install on any machine, or generic components that users can buy and install themselves.

ForHackernews··on Linux support is coming to Snapdragon X2 Series
They must think they will sell more chips to OEMs that want to offer Linux. It's not like they're going to be shaking down Debian for cash.
ForHackernews··on Cloud Agents Are Inevitable AI Prisons
No, of course not. That's an innovative revolutionary tiger that might soon be able to devour not just the audience but all of humanity! You don't want China to have better circus tigers, do you?
ForHackernews··on Cloud Agents Are Inevitable AI Prisons
No. LLMs do not have a history of self, you are anthropomorphizing in a way that will lead you to mistaken conclusions.

"Agentic AI" is a harness with a loop that runs LLM inference repeatedly and saves output to markdown files for the next iteration https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/blob/main/plugins/...

ForHackernews··on If materialism is true, the United States is probably conscious
Maybe you have some other definition of "conscious" in mind but dogs and bats certainly seem far more sentient to me than then the linear algebra box is. My dog wants food, and he doesn't forget he wants food if I tell him he already ate a whole bowl of food.

Oops, my mistake and you're right to call me out for that. I'll make a note in my MEMORIES.md highlighting that one whole bowl of kibble has been consumed. That requirement is satisfied.

I just want a robot butler. It doesn't have to prove mathematics theorems, just do my laundry and make lunch.
ForHackernews··on The Download: why AI's latest breakthroughs and fears may be more hype than rea
As you are eager to declare yourself indistinguishable from a bot, I'll stop replying (I prefer to engage with humans) and your algorithm will presumably run to completion and halt.
ForHackernews··on The Download: why AI's latest breakthroughs and fears may be more hype than rea
I'm a materialist and it's not that I think there's something magical about biological wetware but your refusal to acknowledge the manifest differences between a bird and an airplane ("they both fly! what's the practical difference!?") marks you as an unserious thinker on this subject.

ForHackernews··on The Download: why AI's latest breakthroughs and fears may be more hype than rea
I don't know what to tell you, but there simply are huge differences between a living animal with innate drives to survive, eat, mate and a pile of code on a server that does nothing until you run it. Running your bot locked in a `while True:` loop won't change that.
