Where does the fresh water come from? Your assumption is that sex cells are magically exempt from the accumulation of errors.
FlorinAndrei··on We will be able to live to 1,000
"How much money does he think he'll need to meet his goal?"

That question doesn't make a lot of sense. This is not a Web 2.0 startup. It's a lot more fundamental than that, and a lot of the required tools and technologies have not been invented yet - that's what they are trying to do.

FlorinAndrei··on We will be able to live to 1,000
"Does anyone really want to live to 1000? I think you might get a little bored"

Boredom is infinitely better than nothingness.

FlorinAndrei··on We will be able to live to 1,000
If it's an imperfect mechanism, then look back at the huge chain linking you to the first living creature: adult body / sperm & egg / adult body / sperm & egg / adult body / ...

How come that chain hasn't failed?

Basically, you're just rephrasing the "aging through accumulation of errors" hypothesis. The problem is, errors should accumulate along the chain mentioned above, too. Yet they don't.

FlorinAndrei··on We will be able to live to 1,000
IIRC, either Kurzweil or de Grey said exactly the same thing.
FlorinAndrei··on We will be able to live to 1,000
"I think there's a reason complicated life evolved so that it would age. The standard reason given is that eventually errors in replication accumulate and cancer results. I.e. we age to avoid cancer. But that is a ridiculous reason."

Exactly. Any justification along those lines falls flat on its face when you realize it should also apply to the sperm and egg. Yet it doesn't apply in that case.

FlorinAndrei··on We will be able to live to 1,000
I don't think there's any debate on the fact that, given enough time, research will eventually figure out how to stop and reverse the changes brought by aging.

The debate is - whether this can be done soon, as opposed to 10000 years from now.

I certainly wish that AdG was right. But is he? I'm not sure. Maybe he is (yay!), maybe not.

FlorinAndrei··on 'Artificial life' breakthrough announced by scientists
I agree. The cell is a much bigger challenge.
FlorinAndrei··on 'Artificial life' breakthrough announced by scientists
I agree. They wrote a new OS and uploaded it into existing hardware.

Still a great feat, but not quite 100% "artificial life" yet.

FlorinAndrei··on Living in denial: When a sceptic isn't a sceptic
"In a nutshell: Global warming either (1) isn't real (2) isn't caused by humans or (3) doesn't matter"

I know people who might serve you either #1 or #2 or #3 depending on the situation, their momentary mood or the course of discussion. Sometimes they even provide you a potpourri of all of the above at the same time.

It's like arguing with flat earthers.

FlorinAndrei··on Blundering Sony Nukes PS3 Supercomputing and At What Cost?
Aw, man, I'm so conflicted about that.

I made the financial effort to refurbish the "fat" PS3 when it died, even though I'd already bought a Slim, just to keep that system around to learn Cell programming. It's still running the old firmware and, in fact, boots directly into Yellow Dog Linux by default.

Yet, I agree, it feels kind of pointless nowadays, with the GPUs becoming so much better all the time. Just recently the GTX 260 broke the $200 floor at newegg.com and I'll probably buy one pretty soon (maybe when they are around $150) - and those things are pretty powerful. The real motivator is actually to play Tomb Raider Underworld :-) but I'm pretty sure I'll at least try and do some CUDA with it.

So, doing an open source project on the Cell doesn't seem so attractive nowadays. Maybe just for bragging?

I've also heard rumors that there's a successor to the Cell in the works. I'm not sure how it will compare with the GPUs though.

FlorinAndrei··on Hearing prayer shuts off believers' brain activity
If they go into a light meditative trance when hearing the prayer, that may explain it.

The changes in the brain's functioning during meditation are pretty amazing. This has been researched pretty well with buddhist monks, etc.

FlorinAndrei··on Ubuntu 10.04: First Thoughts
"I have been using Linux since I downloaded Slackware over a 2400 baud modem (1991?) and have used most of the major distros over the years. For me, Ubuntu is the "get stuff done with minimal hassles" distro - love it."

Same here.

Or you could just install the free AVG, the cost is zero (if money is what worries you), the impact on performance is negligible (I do photo and video processing, the antivirus doesn't seem to make Vista slower than it already is), and it's definitely better than nothing (caught a few cockroaches trying to sneak into my system already).

But what do I know, my laptop is running Ubuntu, my primary desktop has always been Linux since 1997.
