FlorianRappl··on StackExchange: Does not work on Netscape Navigator 3.0
I thought its pretty hilarious. First I was worried I've been hacked (or SO has been hacked) then I realized they must start early with their April fool stuff. Liked the guestbook at the bottom!

Nostalgia FTW!

FlorianRappl··on A Love Letter to the People Who Build the Internet Archive
For me Google Cache was helping out under similar circumstances (also tried the Archive first, but apparently Google Cache was [at least back then] more up-to-date).
FlorianRappl··on Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation backtracks on one-year parental leaves
You got my smile ;). Also in Germany its no problem since all we do is sausages.

Wonder why a burger so different that the person making it cannot be on parental leave for a year.

FlorianRappl··on Elite Soccer’s Culture of Graft
What I always find interesting is that if a professional soccer player is caught only a (in absolute terms) substantial amount of money is fined, while "ordinary" people would certainly go behind bars in addition to paying the money. The 23 months seems to be quite a joke to insult the intellect of these ordinary citizens.
FlorianRappl··on AlphaStar: Mastering the Real-Time Strategy Game StarCraft II
Warmup opponent:)

They did the same with AlphaGo back then. First get some "good" player in there to see if they are on the right track. Then get a better player in there. Finally, prepare for a real showdown. In this case it would be ShowTime, Neeb or even some Korean pro (e.g., Stats). Maybe its time to switch matchups and make it PvZ - get Serral and then let's see if the current SC2 champion is good enough to beat this AI.

FlorianRappl··on AlphaStar: Mastering the Real-Time Strategy Game StarCraft II
Thought the same - especially since afaik no AI has yet beaten a Korean pro.

A few months (maybe 1 year ago) the best AIs tried vs some "retired" pro-gamers (like Stork) - it was not even close.

Would have loved to see DeepMind trying to show what's possible here.

FlorianRappl··on AlphaStar: Mastering the Real-Time Strategy Game StarCraft II
I was always wondering why this is not so common in SC2... I mean in StarCraft that was / is well-known and having good worker(-building) control is an essential skill (for Zerg even more than for the other races due to the natural decision where to spent the larva to).
FlorianRappl··on AlphaStar: Mastering the Real-Time Strategy Game StarCraft II
While this is super impressive we should not forget - it was just a single matchup (1/9, requires a lot of adaption; especially on the three races) on a single map (1/N, granted in SC2 the maps are not as diverse as in the original StarCraft) using a single (outdated) patch. Humans are still master in knowledge transfer playing an unknown map and lesser known matchup with greater precision. Once an AI reaches a level where knowledge is transferred more efficiently than what we are capable of I will start getting worried - not beforehand.
FlorianRappl··on Microsoft’s Azure DevOps: An Unsatisfying Adventure
We use Azure DevOps for a fairly large project and so far its working good (i.e., not great, but better than okay-ish). The point with the lost communication is something we also experienced more often than I would wish for, however, on a standard day I do not see the issue appearing at all.

Yes, the mobile page could be optimized (but this is not a deal breaker) and yes some pages do not subscribe for notifications, but usually all these things are not in the hot path.

TL;DR: Lots of improvements in the recent year and many things to come - it may not be perfect but it certainly is usable and provides value to our team.

FlorianRappl··on Who is horse_js?
Noticed it, but I like(d) the ad / package / presentation.

Personally, I think this is "good" marketing.

FlorianRappl··on 773M Password ‘Megabreach’ Is Years Old
I think having 2FA should be a feature of every page that provides a login possibility.
FlorianRappl··on 773M Password ‘Megabreach’ Is Years Old
Had the same; scary thing is the unknown number of people who will just pay / take everything in that email seriously.

FlorianRappl··on MailChimp deleted my account with no warning
I see why people like using something like MailChimp - but I would personally never do (nor advocate) doing so. Your mailing list(s) / subscribers are very valuable. Not controlling these entities and relying on MailChimp to handle them well is... well, quite a bet I would not want to take. Stories like the one referenced are quite common and even though these are outliers I would not like playing with these odds.
FlorianRappl··on Google Chat is the worst desktop chat program I have ever used
Is Google Chat really an Electron app? If it is, then I wonder why it cannot do OTA update or why it has to open a browser for login (instead of opening the page in the Electron shell).

Long story short: It's either a really badly written Electron app or no Electron app (well, still obviously not written for 2018).

FlorianRappl··on Kubernetes on Google, Azure and AWS Compared
I thought 100% the same. While it is known that GKE yields the best managed Kubernetes experience I thought the whole Azure bashing was not only pointless, but also flawed with many inaccurate and even false statements. So much to "honest".
FlorianRappl··on Microsoft suspends development of touch-friendly UWP Office apps for Windows
When I first looked at WinRT app development I thought "how are they going to sell it with these limitations and incompatibilities?" and they did not. UWP was a slightly improved version on WinRT, but it still had some of the same core issues. Luckily, Microsoft has some kind of exit strategy already - I just wonder where that leads.

That all being said: Microsoft should still invest in their desktop stack (especially WPF / .NET for desktop applications in general). Bringing the positive parts from UWP to the established frameworks would be a big win for everyone.

FlorianRappl··on You Don't Need Moment.js
Coming from .NET you should know Noda Time (https://nodatime.org) and the problem it solves. Consider moment the JS alternative, however, with JS native Date being more limited / broken than .NET's DateTime.

TL;DR: Goes way beyond standard formatting.

FlorianRappl··on A review of the Julia language (2014)
I would really love to see what happened since the article, since I, personally, stopped using Julia around the same time (unrelated to the article) and only followed the announcements (e.g., of hitting the 1.0 milestone). I would love to know if the outside view ("it improved / matured a lot") is the true story.
FlorianRappl··on TypeScript at Google
I can believe how popular TS is and it is super useful. I would not write a React application of any noticeable size without TS (and just FYI I would never willingly write an Angular app). The reason that I get far superior code completion and meaningful warnings / errors is sufficient to add a few annotations here and there.

Many people are doing TS wrong. They add types everywhere. Honestly, you should write as many types as necessary, but not more. Use type inference which works remarkably well.

FlorianRappl··on Bye bye BetterSlack
> They did corner the market so clearly they must be doing something, but really I just can't see it. I'm completely stumped.

One of the reasons is the lack of competition, e.g., we use Microsoft Teams instead, but its also an electron app with the same problems (and takes ages to start).

FlorianRappl··on Show HN: Pts.js – A library for visualization and creative coding
They wrote it in TS. Don't know why you think it would take longer with TS. Personally, I prefer using TS as I'm faster with TS when the code is going beyond 1 file or O(10^2) LOC.
FlorianRappl··on Horrors of Using Azure Kubernetes Service in Production
We have a larger migration project going on for months. So far not a single failure occurred and our TEST environment is already fully migrated (quite responsive and rock solid) since 2 weeks.

However, I do share that Azure indeed has released a lot of half-baked features and services lately (last 1.5 to 2 years). I hope this trend does not continue.

FlorianRappl··on Pipelines – a guided tour of the new IO API in .NET
While I agree in total (e.g., how Microsoft approached the problem is great) I do not agree that the Stream API is that ugly. Yes, it is not nice and has a lot of pitfalls, but it is one of the "lower level" APIs in .NET and certainly did its job. Now its (finally) time to move on.

The future here looks bright!

FlorianRappl··on Gnome has moved to GitLab
Thought exactly the same, even though removing the "functional" cookies made the cookie appearance re-appear. If the banner requires a cookie I would have expected this cookie to be in the "essential" section.
FlorianRappl··on Ask HN: Should I share my new open source project on GitHub or GitLab?
Interesting... do you have more information on this? Haven't read about it yet and would like to know more.
