Flankk··on As economists warn of a recession, what lies ahead for the US economy?
The great depression II and world war III. Biden will be announcing his plan to fix this mess soon. He will make the announcement right after this jam jam and crossword puzzle. A warm milk would go nice- wait, come here president kamala let me sniff your hair.
Flankk··on “Amateur” programmer fought cancer with 50 Nvidia Geforce 1080Ti
The FDA may or may not attempt to classify it as a medical device and then shut it down. Otherwise legal if it includes a disclaimer.
Flankk··on Learning Chess at 40 (2016)
Thank you for sharing that series. I've been looking for something like this and chess books put me to sleep. Check out BotezLive, Maurice Ashley, and Hanging Pawns on YouTube. xQc also has a series on how not to play.
Flankk··on Cats learn the names of their friend cats in their daily lives
Scent is the primary sensory input of a cat, not sight. They would be sniffing the screen and the experimenter's hands. I think this is the main reason cats fail the mirror test, not due to lack of intelligence. Cats eyes evolved for optimal visibility in the dark. To a cat, a backlit screen probably looks like sun baby.
Flankk··on Ask HN: Software Licenses Confusion
You don't sell software you sell software licenses. Details on how licenses can be revoked would be outlined in the EULA. Hypothetically you could do that but you wouldn't in practice. Customers don't tend to enjoy bait and switch tactics. Companies that switch to a subscription model typically issue a new version without revoking any licenses.
Flankk··on Twitter Deal Temporarily on Hold
I looked it up and the news seems to be reporting what you said, but it is not true. Section 9.9 of the agreement is contingent on a bunch of conditions being met, after which the deal is forced through if it is also funded. For some reason the media misreported it out of context. The break fee is paid by either Twitter or Elon, depending on who cancels the deal.
Flankk··on 'On a vegan planet, Britain could feed 200M people’
Similar to how you resort to cheap stereotypes within five minutes of being exposed to an uncomfortable topic.
Flankk··on Ask HN: How do you deal with rude interviewers?
"Walk out of a meeting or drop off a call as soon as it is obvious you aren't adding value. It is not rude to leave, it is rude to make someone stay and waste their time."
Flankk··on IBM's Asshole Test
Speaking from experience or from the ass? In my experience a startup is all consuming.
Flankk··on Ask HN: What's the best biohack you've found?
Not drinking too much. Regular exercise at the gym, three days a week. Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries. Eating well, no more microwave dinners and saturated fats.
Flankk··on Twitter warns of possible employee exodus before Musk completes purchase
Sic semper tyrannis.
Flankk··on Ask HN: Have we screwed ourselves as software engineers?
The internet blew the doors off conventional business. Instead of a local community, you're now exposed to 5 of the 8 billion people in the world. Most of the increase in complexity is coming from corporations. They have a tendency to run with a lot of inefficiency. New technologies are going to be introduced at an ever more rapid pace and fragmentation will only increase. I wouldn't say we're doomed, quality of life around the world is rapidly improving. It's a lot to stay on top of and overwhelming to be sure.
Flankk··on Ask HN: What prevents you from hiring remote workers?
Having a close tribe with strong morale can be powerful. It is in our DNA. Building a company of people who can answer brain teaser questions on a webcam is short sighted. Creativity is more powerful than intellect. But I digress. I've read Remote: Office Not Required, I've done plenty of remote freelancing, I'm not convinced.
Flankk··on A minimal C compiler in x86 assembly
That is a stupid analogy. I'm talking about a machine. You are not in control unless you build the machine yourself. Even if you were provided schematics, you cannot be sure they are accurate. The point is free software does not minimize risk. It's a false sense of security.

For things you actually care about, such a surveillance, what if I told you there is a hardware backdoor in your CPU allowing the government to spy on you? Do you realize that is already known? What about the fingerprint scanner. How can you be sure the same is not true of the hardware storing that information?

Flankk··on Ask HN: How do you know when you are right and your opponent is wrong?
The terms right and wrong conflate facts with opinions. Facts are either right or wrong. The sky is blue. Opinions are subjective. Abortion is wrong. The former can be debated easily by simply looking at the evidence. The latter requires at least some common ground to begin with. Without that, there will never be an agreement.
Flankk··on A minimal C compiler in x86 assembly
No, you've missed the point. Don't you understand? The software cannot be trusted whatsoever unless you control the entire stack. So you haven't solved anything. Also, if you think a paragraph is long winded then I'm sure you have never listened to Stallman.
Flankk··on A minimal C compiler in x86 assembly
This is what I don't understand about Stallman. Even if we all agree to use free software, that's only the beginning. The next step is nobody is going to use web applications anymore. Okay now that we're all liberated from corporate espionage what about how the software is made. You can't trust package maintainers any more than you can trust companies. So we all use GNU/Gentoo. As you said, the compiler may be compromised too. Well you learn the dark art of compiling a compiler. But wait, your entire computer is a black box with no schematics whatsoever. Rinse and repeat.
Flankk··on Runcible is a circular, Firefox OS smartphone with a wood case
Unless the industry is switching to circular photos and circular video there's not much point. The front looks like a Nest thermostat and the back like a retro futuristic tit.
Flankk··on Why Are American Chips So Boring?
"Dedicated potato chip eater." Would probably go good on a resume. Doritos spicy sweet chili are S tier. I would put the international kimchi and shrimp chips in F tier. I have a hard time believing this article is written in good faith given that the former is crafted by food scientists. It's not even close.
Flankk··on The Agony of Eros: Dating
Not just you. I found it cringeworthy. Love is not rational. You're not going to be able to quantify your taste in music. I think social media has got many women holding men to a ridiculous standard. You're going to wait a long time if you're looking for some combination of Elon Musk and Justin Bieber.
Flankk··on Ask HN: If I Write Novel While Working at Google Does Google Own My Manuscript?
It's usually in the contract that anything you do on company time is property of the company. I have a feeling they'd be more concerned about the time theft than selling your my little pony fanfic.
Flankk··on Warren Buffett: Explanation for why he doesn’t believe in Bitcoin
It's just an alternative currency. It's the same as exchanging your USD for a foreign currency that has high volatility. Foreign exchange trading doesn't have the hype bitcoin does but it's the same thing. Eventually, bitcoin may prove to be a less inflationary currency so people may enjoy the small annual gains. Until then investing in bitcoin is essentially gambling. Believe it or not, the most successful investor in the world knows what he's talking about here.
Flankk··on Ask HN: What is the fastest way to serve code behind an authenticated endpoint?
https://hasura.io/

It looks shiny enough. I'm still not sold on graph QL, myself. Maybe one day someone will explain to me why it is better.

Flankk··on The Owen Wilson Wow API
I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power you're using here. It didn't require any discipline to attain it. You know, you read what others had done, and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourself, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could before you even knew what you had.
Flankk··on Ask HN: Most Beautiful iOS Apps
Check out Apple Design Award winners and dribbble. Everything is flat UI so don't expect it to blow your pants off.
Flankk··on A dog’s breed doesn’t determine much about its behavior
The comparison is DNA-to-survey and then breed-to-breed, yeah? So they're not controlling for breed or owner bias. Asking an owner what they think of their precious dog is sure to give you junk data. I don't see what you're missing.
Flankk··on [dead]
You're not real, man.
Flankk··on Elon Musk, Twitter’s next owner, provides his definition of “free speech”
What are your thoughts about following people around who trigger you and downvoting their comments? If you want to go on a date just let me know, sweetheart.
Flankk··on Elon Musk, Twitter’s next owner, provides his definition of “free speech”
Freedom of speech is not just some law for the government, it is a principle. The left wants to obey the letter of the law but not the spirit. Freedom of speech is recognized in international human rights law and by the United Nations. Nobody is saying racism and bigotry are good. But anyone saying censorship is the ideal solution should be met with a great degree of skepticism. I think this problem can be solved as simply as having an extra setting to toggle platform moderation. That way everyone gets what they want.
Flankk··on New data: Do developers think Web3 will build a better internet?
When the bubble bursts and Bitcoin goes to zero it will take Web3, NFTs, and shitcoins with it. And people thought silicon valley was dumb during the dot-com bubble. At least those companies were real and not just a convoluted ponzi scheme.
