Flankk··on DRY is an over-rated programming principle?
The DRY example is better though. The payload is an object. When you have multiple objects of the same shape you have a class of objects. Menu items could be loaded from a JSON source. Separation of concerns and duplication is removed from the code.
Flankk··on Ask HN: Looking for feedback on our website (freelance platform))
The grammar is poor throughout. For example:

> We help companies access top freelancers faster, more cost-effective and risk-free

This is better: "The fast and cost-effective way for companies to access top freelancers."

Cis is slang for cisgender. Cisgender force has a weird connotation. Page load times are slow. Icon set and bootstrap design looks cheap. Lacks differentiation from Toptal. Hope that helps.

Flankk··on The Norwegian library with unreadable books
Given that space shuttles now use a touchscreen it's fair to assume you're wrong. One hundred years will likely bring us a brain interface. You're thinking too small.
Flankk··on Ask HN: How to keep my daughter busy while tickling her curiosity
Yes but the market is kind of poor right now. You'll need to have good numbers to attract any kind of attention.

Batteries increase in capacity by 5% per year. They will be 1.05^100 = 132 times the capacity of the batteries of today. This does not include increases to energy efficiency, which will possibly be even greater. In other words, smart watch batteries will probably last as long as digital watch batteries do today. By then, smart phones will be about as relevant as a palm pilot.
Flankk··on Ask HN: Am I incompotent for web development?
The web has always been bad, just never quite so complex. The stacks are more complex and fragile and I would argue fragile because of the complexity. Most of these tools are intended to improve developer experience but I have yet to see evidence of that. I'm just glad I'm mostly working with C++ these days.
Flankk··on Driverless robotaxi fleet paralyzed for hours in San Francisco
Obviously there is no failsafe that pulls the car over, otherwise you would see that the cars had pulled over. This might be annoying on city streets but imagine if it were on the highway. An almost guaranteed 50 car pileup. If history is any guide, this will actually happen in the next few years and be followed by a lawsuit and regulation.
Flankk··on Meta bans staff from open discussion of Roe vs. Wade
I looked it up and it's in decline but still three-quarters of America. Half of Americans said their religion is very important in their own life.

Flankk··on Meta bans staff from open discussion of Roe vs. Wade
Emotions are feelings. You don't have control of them but you do have control over your actions and your speech. If we agree that policies should be rational, then we agree that emotions are non-productive here. The human rights you are talking about are not fundamental in any way, they are contrived. If the state does not protect human life, then nobody will. The issue is not as simple as you've made it out to be.
Flankk··on Meta bans staff from open discussion of Roe vs. Wade
There's way too much emotion in politics these days. I would like to see a return of rational discourse. I've had my fill of both the screaming liberals and the dusty conservatives. Most of the complex issues deal with morality so it's probably all for naught. The tip of the morality pyramid is God for most people. No point using empirical evidence when you don't believe in it to begin with.
Flankk··on Sleeping longer than 6.5 hours/day can help you lose weight: study
After years of using a standing desk I decided to up my game a bit. I'm now using an inversion table with a built-in laptop mount. This puppy has a 24V DC motor to maximize circulation for extended hacking sessions. I've found it has marginal productivity gains but colleagues no longer bother me during a sprint.
Flankk··on Need some advice, feeling depressed about the direction of our industry
People choose what language they learn based on what jobs are available. Companies choose what language they use based on what FAANG companies use. What you're saying is not obvious, it is a naive assumption. Popular does not equal good. If that's what you think you can go ahead and explain why Java is superior to C++. I don't think you even know why it rose to prominence.
Flankk··on Need some advice, feeling depressed about the direction of our industry
It's not easier to build anything. It's easier to build web applications and video games but we already have way too many of those. If you're doing something innovative you will find things have indeed gone backwards in a fundamental way.
Flankk··on Need some advice, feeling depressed about the direction of our industry
No advice, I feel the same. The industry has gone to shit and it's crossed the point of no return. The only real innovation has been with AI. Everything else is an endless reinvention of the wheel. Most of the skills I've learned are equivalent to underwater basket weaving. OOP was supposed to manage complexity but it actually creates more complexity. Imagine going back to the 70s and talking to a developer learning C and Scheme. How depressing to tell them no improvements will be made over the next 50 years and languages will actually get much worse.
Flankk··on Ask HN: Model Business as Markov Chains?
No, that wouldn't work. Business is a game of incomplete information. Take financial predictions as an example. They are frequently wrong even though they are based on real data and the problem is much simpler. As a startup, mathematical modelling is a waste of time. It is done in large corporations using machine learning and such. Beware of premature optimization.
Flankk··on Jack Dorsey announces ‘Web 5’, a new platform built on Bitcoin blockchain
Who is the person that says, "No Jack, this is a dumb idea and a total waste of resources." For all Amazon's flaws, at least they're solving real-world problems. I mean you can fly around in a $10B/year fairy tale land but there are still many unsolved problems that don't require a blockchain.
Flankk··on Ask HN: How to advocate for prospective employers to show us their codebases?
This is exactly right. Puzzles have one solution, programming problems have a solution space. It's like judging an artist by asking them about art.
Flankk··on EU lawmakers vote to ban sales of gasoline cars by 2035
Supply will increase with demand. I think by 2030 most gas stations will have EV chargers. It's already a non-issue in the West, not sure what you guys are doing over there. For me, the larger issue is repairability.
Flankk··on Top Microsoft exec resigns after being accused of fondling women at work
Was he one of the executives that extorts money from third-world governments? Or is that a separate department. My only surprise is that the Surface doesn't come with a straw for cocaine.
Flankk··on Welcome to the M1 Windows project
It is a problem for businesses though. If they were going to go after anyone, it would be a business violating the EULA. Same problem with running macOS on Windows.
Flankk··on An AI shopping app that was just using humans
VCs would get better returns if their strategy wasn't just throwing money at anything with AI or blockchain. True innovation comes from lateral thinking and often sounds like a bad idea, precisely because it violates your assumptions. AI is the opposite of that, it is a meme technology.
Flankk··on Coffee drinkers live longer, especially if they add a spoonful of sugar
They adjusted the hazard ratios to remove the effect of diabetes. Would this not skew the data when they are not included in the sugar cohort? The confounding variables I'm talking about are behavioral, not clinical.
Flankk··on Coffee drinkers live longer, especially if they add a spoonful of sugar
Is this meaningful or just a deceptive statistic? Are the people who are not adding sugar abstaining because they have diabetes? Because they're trying to lose weight? Do younger demographics have a sweet tooth? Do older generations drink black coffee? Do black coffee people drink more coffee than those who don't like the taste? Et cetera.

Flankk··on Build and launch your startup in 30 days
I don't know anything about no code. Maybe it will work for you. I remember how bad Dreamweaver was so I stay away. You can definitely do an ecommerce website rapidly. What successful software products have been built using no code?
Flankk··on Build and launch your startup in 30 days
I've been programming for 20 years and as of now it takes me about three months to build a MVP solo. That's full time, binging on coffee, sleeping under my desk. There's always unforeseen things that creep up and create a total brick wall for you. Whether that is a library issue, a cryptic bug, an architecture problem, or unknown complexity. Probably all of the above. You will meet these challenges, and you will overcome them. Just not in 30 days.

"Build half a product, not a half-ass product."

–Getting Real

Flankk··on Mark Zuckerberg on Messenger (2013)
Shareholder value is a business term, sometimes phrased as shareholder value maximization or as the shareholder value model, which implies that the ultimate measure of a company's success is the extent to which it enriches shareholders.
Flankk··on Much of the rise in autism is likely a statistical mirage
The seven most frequently prescribed classes of psychoactive drugs were antidepressants, stimulants, tranquilizers/antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, hypotensive agents, anxiolytic/sedative/hypnotics, and benzodiazepines. The data on other relevant diagnoses indicate that children and youth are frequently treated with medication under an autism-spectrum diagnosis, even though the target symptoms may be commonly associated with other mental disorders. Age data indicate that about 70% of children with autism-spectrum disorders age 8 yr and up receive some form of psychoactive medication in a given year.

Flankk··on Much of the rise in autism is likely a statistical mirage
If you had read the article you would know that's exactly what it says. The definition has broadened. The pharmaceutical industry has a perverse incentive to medicate everyone. They are the invisible hand destroying America. They profit off of autism, ADHD, obesity, anxiety, and depression. The opioid epidemic is the tip of the iceberg.
Flankk··on Why building profitable trading bot is hard?
Two investors can look at the same balance sheet and come to opposite conclusions. 90% of actively managed investment funds underperform the market. It's a hard problem, full stop. If you're good at solving hard problems, you could solve something less boring and probably make more.
Flankk··on Mark Zuckerberg on Messenger (2013)
It's not a getting old thing. Corporations ruin everything. Maximizing revenue at the expense of everything else has its cost.
