FlamingMoe··on Valdi – A cross-platform UI framework that delivers native performance
Wholeheartedly agree.
FlamingMoe··on Firefox is the best mobile browser
i prefer the Brave mobile app. I previously used firefox focus, but I basically just made brave into a focus app by turning on Private Browsing Only, but can also disable the functionality when needed.
FlamingMoe··on California issues fine over lawyer's ChatGPT fabrications
$10k is not a high enough fine to dissuade this behavior. Large law firms will just approach this the same way that big tech accepts GDPR fines as part of the cost of doing business.
FlamingMoe··on The Unforgotten
This brings to mind "Still Life", the story of John McClamrock, a high school football star paralyzed during a game, and his mother subsequently devotes her life to taking care of him.

I somehow came across the article in April 2020, the peak covid lockdown, during which I lived alone in my small apartment.

It was one of the most profound things I have ever read: https://www.texasmonthly.com/being-texan/still-life/

FlamingMoe··on Launch HN: Bitrig (YC S25) – Build Swift apps on your iPhone
Neat. I just tried it out and one thing I was pleasantly surprised about was the styling it came up with. It was sleek, and it did not have the purply gradienty tailwindy styling that I always get from Claude. Did you do much to adjust the prompt for custom styles?
FlamingMoe··on Pa. House passes 'click-to-cancel' subscription bills
I buy a lot of plugins for WordPress sites, and there are definitely some companies in that ecosystem known to utilize dark patterns and have difficult cancellation processes.
FlamingMoe··on Calendars, Contacts and Files in Stalwart
Cool! I love anything in the direction of email decentralization.
FlamingMoe··on Find Your People
“I would have liked to work hard on something I cared about. But I didn't have anything I cared about”

This is one of those sentences that make me jealous I didn’t write it. Just such a perfect description of early adulthood for many.

FlamingMoe··on HealthBench – An evaluation for AI systems and human health
Good lord. The idea that a sleep‑deprived, bias‑prone mammal can be relied on to give accurate health‑related information is deeply flawed and troubling. It’s one thing to seek a human for empathy, small talk, or a routine vaccine, but entirely different to assume an overworked doctor will consistently out‑diagnose a modern data tool. I shudder at the thought that the practitioner I visit might simply repeat whatever a drug‑rep lunch pitch or outdated guideline left in their memory.
FlamingMoe··on Dotless Domains
I think this post is trending because of a comment on the announcement about the new Pope, where someone pointed out the redundancy in the vatican.va domain.
FlamingMoe··on From: Steve Jobs. "Great idea, thank you."
Great story, put a smile on my face.
FlamingMoe··on Show HN: I built a word game. My mom thinks it's great. What do you think?
"a timer (urgency) is usually not a very good idea for thinky games" 100% agree. I hate the timer on the NY Times mini puzzle. I like these types of simple games for unwinding, and a timer makes it more stressful.
FlamingMoe··on Restructuring Announcement
Mentioning "our revenue continues to grow" seems quite out of place in an announcement like this.
FlamingMoe··on Facebook Customer Service Scam
FYI, a friend’s mom was recently scammed, and her Facebook account was taken over. She called what seemed like a legitimate customer support number, but it was actually a scam—something that Facebook’s own system unintentionally made look credible.

I've included the URL that was used, but I removed the scammer's number. If there’s a good reason to share it, let me know, and I can provide it.

How the Scam Works: - Exploiting Facebook’s Search: Scammers take advantage of Facebook’s own search results page. When someone searches for customer support, Facebook may return a “No results” page. - Embedding Fake Numbers: Scammers manipulate the URL or search query itself to include a fake support number. Because Facebook displays the search URL, it looks like an official result—even though the number is fake. - Tricking Users into Calling: If someone dials the number, they reach a scammer, not Facebook. Account Takeover & Theft: The scammer may ask for login details, request payment, or gain access to the victim’s account under the guise of “helping.”

FlamingMoe··on BritCSS: Fixes CSS to use non-American English
However, that is not the perspective of the creator of BritCSS, who refers to current CSS property names as "bastardised" spellings.
FlamingMoe··on Show HN: Immersive Gaussian Splat experience of Sutro Tower, San Francisco
Beautiful, the visuals combined with the music gave me quite a nostalgic feeling for the city where I once worked daily but haven't visited in years.
FlamingMoe··on Doge Teen with Cybercrime Connections Now Inside Cybersecurity Agency CISA
One good reason? Look at the financial state of the country. We’ve been running trillion-dollar deficits, ballooning debt, and unsustainable spending for years. If Musk’s appointees are doing the opposite of what got us here—cutting waste, streamlining bureaucracy, and questioning sacred cows—that’s at least some indication they might be acting in taxpayers’ interests. The real question isn’t why assume they are—it’s why assume the status quo was working in the first place.
FlamingMoe··on Launch HN: Pinch (YC W25) – Video conferencing with immersive translation
I work with a lot of overseas developers who speak with thick accents and sometimes it can be very difficult to understand them or for them to understand me. I could definitely see this being a more pleasant experience for everyone.
FlamingMoe··on Matt Mullenweg, Automattic's CEO, Seems Bound and Determined to Wreck WordPress
The WordPress community of developers/contributors has been under the impression that the dot org site was under the control of the nonprofit WP foundation. However Matt recently declared that dot org has been his personal website this whole time, and that entitles him to solely decide when someone else can no longer use it. However documents of the founding seem to indicate that dot org is indeed under the foundation: https://x.com/sneakytits85/status/1881119968215142462?s=46
FlamingMoe··on Ask HN: Is it a bad idea to make an email domain with an uncommon TLD?
I spent $900 on a clean dotcom domain name last year primarily for email purposes. I had a lot of doubts, but in hindsight I am happy I did it - now I can host my email anywhere while keeping the same address.
FlamingMoe··on I keep turning my Google Sheets into phone-friendly webapps
True that Claude can generate a simple working prototype in a single prompt. But there's still the friction of deploying the app, making it accessible across devices, and easily managing updates. Which something like Glide streamlines for non-technical users.
FlamingMoe··on Clap to Find My Phone App
What does "Trusted by WordPress" mean?
FlamingMoe··on I Stayed
ChatGPT implies Automattic may have been first, or least certainly led it to wide adoption: https://chatgpt.com/share/6701e039-0e74-8012-b821-dea9789564...
FlamingMoe··on Response to WP Engine’s Lawsuit
Hopefully his first advice was to tell Matt to cease the hotheaded tweets, livestream interviews, and hn comments.
FlamingMoe··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
Why am I always last to get the cool new features??
FlamingMoe··on WordPress.org bans WP Engine
IMO the craziest revelation in this whole ordeal is that Matt personally owns WordPress.org. I have worked with WP for close to a decade and I was always under the impression that it was owned by the nonprofit foundation.

So this means that a large chunk of the functionality (plugin directory and updates) of a standard WP install relies on a website controlled by one man. No way this dynamic can be allowed to continue after this whole mess.

FlamingMoe··on WP Engine sent “cease and desist” letter to Automattic
100%. WP is GPL and they can use it how they like. And others are also allowed to call them out if they want to.
FlamingMoe··on Crypto scammers hack OpenAI's press account on X
he is implying that sam altman himself is a scammer
FlamingMoe··on Fine-tuning now available for GPT-4o
It's wild how quickly the AI landscape shifts. Just 6 months ago, I couldn't go a day without using ChatGPT. Now, it's like finding an old flip phone in a drawer. I've gone full Claude convert. Wonder where I'll be six months from now.
