Fizzadar··on Choose Firefox Now, Or Later You Won't Get A Choice
I will use Firefox when a single tab can't cause the entire browser to pause. Until then, for better or worse, Chrome wins.

EDIT: Would much prefer Opera if it supported all my Chrome extensions.

Fizzadar··on Sense – Wake up when it's right for you
Sleep Cycle already does this - without the need for any extra items lying around... can't see how this improves on it.
Fizzadar··on A Server Naming Scheme
In what world is `tst` a better part of a hostname than `testing`? All this article seems discuss is a naming scheme for lazy people who don't want to type long and descriptive hostnames.
Fizzadar··on iOS 8 randomises the MAC address while scanning for WiFi networks
Despite this it does allow apple to enable customers to choose by turning bluetooth on/off, and not forcing them to disable wifi to avoid tracking (am I a minority that have bluetooth off by default?).
Fizzadar··on The day I left my son in the car
When I got to the bit about being arrested I was completely baffled... there's a law against this? I'm from the UK and as a child was left in the car for short periods, which is almost certainly commonplace.

I'm simply stunned that parents can be prosecuted for this. Another wtf America moment.

Fizzadar··on HipChat is now free for unlimited users
We use HipChat at work, and I use Slack for some other projects; both pale in comparison to the simplicity, flexibility and client-options of IRC. But for those less technical it's a fantastic and easy to setup alternative. Pointless in an all-dev company, but anywhere else, priceless.
Fizzadar··on New Haxe website
Thanks for the links, really interesting reads and some great programming concepts.

Although I'm not a fan of curly brackets and semicolons, it's the `var` keyword which annoys me the most!

Fizzadar··on New Haxe website
Fantastic idea. Shame the language had to take so many cues from JavaScript!
Fizzadar··on It's OK not to use tools
Couldn't agree more, perhaps a tiny bit of PHP to handle headers/footers but certainly nothing more.

It seems these days you need a whole Django/Wordpress/etc app for even the simplest, static content.

Fizzadar··on Static Site Generators
Quickly scanned through - pretty sure jinja is a templating engine, not a static site generator...
Fizzadar··on The New AWS TCO Calculator
Obviously completely biased. Well utilised hardware or dedicated servers can easily compete (and blow out of the water at cheaper DC's) on price with AWS (and then you actually get guaranteed resources).
Fizzadar··on KernelCare – Kernel updates without rebooting the system
The site is pretty light on details; I'd want to know more how it works before moving from kSplice...
Fizzadar··on Can You Buy A License to Speed?
There's a fine balance here; speed isn't necessarily a problem, but speeding in the wrong places/at the wrong times. It's all about driving to the given conditions, which sadly many people do not do.
Fizzadar··on Digital Ocean needs to start showing outages on their status page
I suspect this is because it looks bad to display the individual status of every node, because they'll have more common failures; keeping it limited to DC-wide issues is good for business.

They should have a private/client-only per-hypervisor status page.

Fizzadar··on Loca – social heatmaps, beta signup open
I love these "skip ahead w/ referrals" systems, because they're so incredibly easy to cheat - sorry about that!

Am very much looking forward to checking the app out.

Fizzadar··on Russia kicked out of G8
What the countries allied against Russia's moves into crimea don't seem to realise is that Russia literally doesn't give a shit:

Lavrov added that Russia was "not attached to this format and we don't see a great misfortune if it will not gather. Maybe, for a year or two, it will be an experiment for us to see how we live without it."

Fizzadar··on Coming Soon to Hacker News: Pending Comments
I love this idea, and welcome any attempts to improve the quality of comments on HN (despite already being one of the more sensible discussion sites).

My problem is with the not being able to post more comments while one is pending. I'm mostly a reader/lurker and only really comment on posts which really get me fired up. Now what happens when I'm taking 30 minutes in the morning to read HN and want to make 2/3 comments on a couple of different posts? Would I now only be able to comment on one and hope the others remained suitably visible for me to find them later? I really think blocking further comments while a user has a pending one is a terrible idea, and will only harm HN in the long run.

Fizzadar··on Custom Colors of HN
Loads! Thank you everyone - enjoying a nice purple-topped HN :)
Fizzadar··on Custom Colors of HN
Currently sitting @ 249!
Fizzadar··on LuaJIT 2.0.3
I built a web framework & control panel (early stages) using Lua + Nginx (http://github.com/Fizzadar/Luawa & http://github.com/Oxygem/Oxypanel). Although both are pretty basic currently I think Lua has huge potential when it comes to high performance web frameworks.
Fizzadar··on The French way of cancer treatment
I'm glad to see this on the HN homepage, it's about time americans started questioning why their insurance/healthcare system is focussed on money and not health.
Fizzadar··on How I Ended Up In Solitary After Calling 911 For Help
Perhaps the safest (certainly not right) thing to do is call 911 and get the fuck out of there rather than trying to help and being imprisoned/abused for it.
Fizzadar··on How I Ended Up In Solitary After Calling 911 For Help
Thanks for the link, really interesting/enlightening read. I would hope, at least, that Europe's police officers are on the whole less pointlessly violent (though, as Peretz points out the majority of SF police probably don't act as such).
Fizzadar··on How I Ended Up In Solitary After Calling 911 For Help
“I mean, there are a lot of young cops on the street, trying to make a name for themselves.” - oh, so it's OK then. Absolutely disgusted by this story, particularly after reading another story about a different fucked up justice system in America (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7229930).

I did and somewhat still want to live in America for a year+, but seeing this shit daily puts me right off. So glad to be European right now.

Fizzadar··on The Facebook Comment That Ruined a Life
Although he's an idiot for posting such comments, the way the US police and district attorney's have behaved is unbelievable. This guy is clearly innocent but they seem hellbent on getting a prosecution. I see cases such as this much more often on HN recently and it feels as if the entire US justice system is totally fucked up and completely missing the real targets: the criminals.
Fizzadar··on Bitcoin withdrawal processing suspended
So another exchange which ignored the known 'bug' in bitcoin and which as a result made them open to exploitation. Why can't bitstamp just admit they have a software issue and are fixing it?
Fizzadar··on Python with Braces
Depressing to think anyone on this earth finds curly braces an improvement to Python. I always prefer languages without, curly braces are ugly!
Fizzadar··on You might not need jQuery
jQuery still has it's uses... like when it's essential to have consistent support across browsers old & new. However I much prefer to tell users who insist on using out-of-date/poorly-built browsers to upgrade or fuck off, hopefully gently encouraging them to do so.
Fizzadar··on You will probably need jQuery
pfft I'd rather not offer support for buggy/lagging-behind JS implementations.
Fizzadar··on Digital Ocean vs. Linode
The way I see it:

Linode for production

Digital Ocean for staging
