Firehawke··on FB users buying Oculus VR headsets to get customer service prioritization
Should be a footgun, but they've never really been penalized for things like that.
Firehawke··on MacType: Better Font Rendering for Windows
This was exactly what irritated me and sent me over to this thread-- there's basically no comparison shots to get an idea of how this should look.

For something that's so visual, you really REALLY need to draw the eyes to something that shows why you need to download it.

Firehawke··on I Am Parting with My Crypto Library
Glad to see my initial immediate mental reaction of "He should get in touch with IA" was right.

If there was ever a team that could get this dealt with properly, it's them.

Firehawke··on The Itanic Has Sunk
This post, funny enough, absolutely gets my thoughts down entirely.

If I didn't know better I'd have accused myself of ghostwriting that post. That's amusing and horrifying.. but it's all accurate to what I think!

Firehawke··on Microsoft Silently Dropping Emails – a Sad but True Story (2020)
I've never hit this with GMail, but I've hit this repeatedly with outlook.com/hotmail.com accounts. There's a persistent 20% chance of any given email to my accounts being dropped silently.

It's been enough of a headache that I haven't been able to migrate off GMail and that's frustrating as hell. Especially with important medical emails..

Firehawke··on Windows 96
This is why I would create a c:\wininst folder and dump the CD worth of files. When I needed to do an OS reinstall, I'd boot to DOS mode, cd \wininst, and do the install from hard drive to hard drive. Much MUCH faster and much MUCH less painful.
Firehawke··on Illinois first state to tell police they can't lie to minors in interrogations
This. The rules that allow them to confiscate and sell or use materials deemed to be "having been used in aid of committing a crime" means the funding is actually drastically higher than it once was.

High enough for them to buy APCs for staging public relations events.

Firehawke··on Ask HN: I was hit with a patent troll lawsuit, how do I deal with it?
So the theory he was Stalin is clearly not true.
Firehawke··on You can legally get and run WordPerfect for free
This, contact Jason Scott (@Textfiles on Twitter, www.textfiles.com) and he'll probably hook you up with someone in a matter of 24 hours.
Firehawke··on “Please don't add any of my stuff to this project”
Well, Home Assistant's handling of this is well-timed. I was just looking at the possibility of redoing my openHAB config in HA but this makes it really clear I don't want to go within a 150 mile radius of HA.
Firehawke··on Dolphin Emulator - Dolphin MEGA Progress Report: April and May 2021
F-Zero GX has a widescreen option as well. It's probably one of the better looking games when you can pump it at 1080p or higher, but I don't think a Pi is quite ready for that level of abuse yet. Maybe another 2-3 generations of new Pi hardware.
Firehawke··on LOL just got kicked out of @ycombinator
Any kind of working moderation system is going to have a certain level of "we have to play it by ear" or else it gets overrun by rules lawyers playing to the word and not the spirit of imposed rules.
Firehawke··on John Carmack on JPEG
For arcade, yes, but MAME does do consoles as well in both NTSC and PAL formats. MAME has a pretty high-quality MegaDrive/Genesis driver, for instance.
Firehawke··on John Carmack on JPEG
I'd add the relative lack of calibration on NTSC as another huge factor. When you have TV manufacturers putting out sets with completely different defaults on top of broadcasters not being able to calibrate to any sort of standard TV appearance, you'd see a lot of different results per-station AND per-show.
Firehawke··on Rethinking the computer ‘desktop’ as a concept
No kidding. I don't see why you'd need to clear your desktop unless you're screen sharing and have things open you really don't want the other person seeing. If you're trying to find something on the Windows desktop, Win+D once to minimize everything, then a second time to bring all your windows back.
Firehawke··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
Haven't had any problems with Amazon shipping, but I'm thinking I might need to record every unboxing just to make sure I can prove what happened the first time it DOES hit me.

Because it most certainly will, sooner or later.

Firehawke··on Security keys are now supported for SSH Git operations
My experience is that the initial setup with gpg-agent is a massive pain, especially on Windows+WSL2 setups, but once you get it working it's great.

Well, except when gpg-agent dies out of nowhere and you have to restart it..

It's still better security even if it doesn't go quite as smoothly as I'd hope.

A tip to anyone else here who wants to do this: You want gpg-agent, and you absolutely need to use a newer build of OpenSSH than the one that ships with Windows 10 currently. Remove that and go find the official distribution on GitHub or Chcoolatey so you have a version that supports that key type. Then you also need to make sure to set up the environment variable GIT_SSH to point to that version of OpenSSH or else Git for Windows will try to use its own older build and then you will spend a week trying to figure out how to make it work.

Firehawke··on The Return of Fancy Tools
At least in my own specific case, I have neurological damage that has swiss-cheesed my memory. I get that not everyone needs nor wants smart tools, but I prefer to have at least a moderate safety net.

The fact that there's such a wide range of options doesn't hurt. I'm currently using Logseq for note-taking (yeah, I actually had to look up the name. That's how bad my memory is) and it's been a considerable help there. VSCode, well, I use it with custom task setups that script as much of the manual work that I'd be likely to slip up on as possible.

Not everyone needs that sort of thing. I didn't 20 years ago.

So, yeah, I agree with what you're saying-- different tools for different needs.

Firehawke··on The compiler will optimize that away
It had Shoutcast.
Firehawke··on What's Salesforce? (2019)
Scope creep from hell.
Firehawke··on Thoughts on a “HDD shortage” from an industry insider
It's interesting that that's precisely where we are with video cards-- the easiest way to get one is to buy a prebuilt system from any of the big names.

It's really not much of a stretch to see HDs go to exactly that same pressure point.

Firehawke··on Morrowind rebooted the original Xbox
It's notable that the controller and memory card slot are on the same bus-- in fact, the system isn't talking to the memory card directly! It has to send requests and data through the controller, back to the system, and then to the card port.

This is because the original specification would have had a memory card slot in the controller but it was too expensive. They also had considered using floppies for storage, but they were too unreliable (and my experiences with 1.44MB 3.5s definitely agrees that consumer-grade cheap disks sucked hard)

Firehawke··on Microsoft buys Nuance for nearly $20B
I'm not a full data point to work from, but I've got neuropathy and nerve damage. Side effects include severe short term memory problems (I can forget some things as quickly as 10 seconds, as frustrating as that is..) and sometimes motor control issues.

For me, speech recognition and assistants, along with software like Todoist, are able to keep me far more functional than I would be otherwise.

Firehawke··on Microsoft buys Nuance for nearly $20B
Is it too early for me to be hoping that Microsoft will integrate Dragon into Windows and make the voice recognition actually work well?
Firehawke··on Google’s copying of the Java SE API was fair use [pdf]
Exactly this. There's a lot of historic revision that says IE was never good, but there was a significant chunk of time around IE2 and IE3 where it slaughtered Netscape on Windows. Better performance, less crashing all around.

IE4 is where ActiveX and browser bloat started to become more obvious, then IE5 was an improvement again.. but we were only a short time from the launch of what would become Firefox. By that point, people were tired of the constant IE issues.

Firehawke··on Leah Rowe Coups Libreboot
The right answer probably would have been to fork and just do her own thing under a different name. That's certainly happened more than a few times in the past, and sometimes the new one ends up being renamed to the old project name once it's clear that's the way forward.

Cleaner, less drama, and you don't break the trust of your former team.

Firehawke··on Ubiquiti starts serving ads in their management interface
Or hiding in plain sight in posts here.
Firehawke··on Ubiquiti starts serving ads in their management interface
More and more I'm seeing a general public backlash against advertising. It's been so large and so prevalent that people find it irritating enough to avoid products that are getting heavy pushes. I've found myself having a visceral "stay the hell away from this product" reaction on occasion as well.

My stance on web advertising has always been "go back to static, not in-my-face, non-animated, no audio, no javascript ads and I'll consider turning off my ad blocker."

I'm absolutely not letting my computer get infected through the ad networks, which is a separate issue really.

Firehawke··on Show HN: I built a VS Code Theme Creator – easily make VS Code themes in browser
Don't quite need to do that.

Follow https://themes.vscode.one/faq/publishing-theme to step 4. Then use VSCE to make a package file as shown on https://code.visualstudio.com/api/working-with-extensions/pu...

You can then distribute the VSIX file that you create any way you please and also do a VSIX file installation of the theme on your local copy of VSC.

Had a bit of trouble changing the title/description. Something was triggering uBlock Origin in such a way that I had to disable it to be able to change the title and description so I could save it.
