FinnKuhn··on Claude Opus 4.8
/security-review already exists so I don't think it would be crazy to have a /mythos-security-review as more thourough command as well. I think it's more likely it is going to be released at some point to the general public though - although the the pricing might make it quite unattractive.
FinnKuhn··on We're testing new ad formats in Search and expanding our Direct Offers pilot
I would have expected them to wait with ads until OpenAI starts first and users switch to Gemini. Google is probably the player that could afford to wait the longest with this and increase their market share that way.
FinnKuhn··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
Only via QR codes as I understand. So no replacement for paying via Apple Watch or card.
FinnKuhn··on EU to crack down on TikTok, Instagram's 'addictive design' targeting kids
I think especially restricting endless scrolling is a good thing overall to reduce the addictiveness of social media and its harmful effects.

HN having pages instead of a feed or endless list is one of the things I really like about it.

FinnKuhn··on Bitter Lessons from the ISSpresso
According to their website [1] only some scanners support the 2L limit while others don't so you will only know on arrival at the airport which limit is relevant for you.

FinnKuhn··on Poland is now among the 20 largest economies
Lots of people who work in Luxembourg don't live there so anything "per capita" is a bit misleading.

Additionally a lot of the EU's institutions are based there or have offices there, some of which might count as investments as well.

Lastly, everything there is really expensive. So you need to invest a larger amount to achieve the same thing as elsewhere.

FinnKuhn··on DNSSEC disruption affecting .de domains – Resolved
A real party killer if I have ever seen one.
FinnKuhn··on iOS 27 is adding a 'Create a Pass' button to Apple Wallet

FinnKuhn··on Trademark violation: Fake Notepad++ for Mac
Thank you for explaining this to me. That makes total sense!
FinnKuhn··on Trademark violation: Fake Notepad++ for Mac
So, it's a French trademark. Not a lawyer, but from what I remember trademarks need to be registered in every region you want to enforce them in separately.

If the author of "Notepad++ for Mac" doesn't happen to be French as well, is there anything (legally) preventing them from using this trademark?

FinnKuhn··on Southwest Headquarters Tour
While mostly correct it is missing that not all customers in all stores want the same.

Customers in store A might have wildly different preferences to customers in store B. Starbucks can't account for that - small stores can.

FinnKuhn··on Trademark violation: Fake Notepad++ for Mac
Using the trademark is one thing. The authors brazen reaction another: https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/issue...
FinnKuhn··on I Spent My Sabbatical Building a Power Meter for Sledgehammers
Oh
FinnKuhn··on I Spent My Sabbatical Building a Power Meter for Sledgehammers
Minimum vacation days here in Germany are 20 with many companies offering 30 so the idea that you can't take of at least a couple of weeks for a vacation is just crazy to me.

How do you travel and see the world like that?

FinnKuhn··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
"BeReal" tried this and I thought it was pretty cool. However, it died somewhat quickly.
FinnKuhn··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
> You're telling me there's no "notify me when domain X becomes for sale" service?

I looked into this a while ago and I'm pretty sure that there are hundreds of these services and even ones you can host yourself. No idea how well they work though.

FinnKuhn··on I wrote to Flock's privacy contact to opt out of their domestic spying program
Titles should be descriptive and in this example the blog is doing a deep dive into how the tech actually works. So the content isn't about that "Pizza Tycoon simulated traffic on a 25 MHz CPU", but about how it did so.

As far as I can tell this is supposed to catch "How to" titles, where it totally makes sense though. I guess there is an exception to every rule though.

FinnKuhn··on I wrote to Flock's privacy contact to opt out of their domestic spying program
There are definitely some automatic formatting rules for titles though.

E.g. capitalization or one that removes any "How" from the beginning of a title. When I wanted to submit "How Pizza Tycoon simulated traffic on a 25 MHz CPU" I had to edit it after posting or it would have said "Pizza Tycoon simulated traffic on a 25 MHz CPU", which doesn't make any sense.

FinnKuhn··on Bring Back Idiomatic Design (2023)
I'm not in Asia though.

It's also normal to speak Chinese in China. That doesn't mean that I should be speaking Chinese as well.

FinnKuhn··on Bring Back Idiomatic Design (2023)
No, modern browsers are horrible at this as they are often ignoring your settings (at least Chrome and Edge on Windows do). They are basing the format entirely on the language instead of the date format configured in your Windows settings. Safari on iOS seems to not have this issue though as far as I can tell.

FinnKuhn··on Happy Map
The makes sense when you look at the responses themselves.

Children/family are mostly containing answers such as "My son visited me on Mother's Day.", which you can't really cause yourself.

FinnKuhn··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
That the person is dead would be a pretty convincing one.

Or they just lost access.

FinnKuhn··on Are We Idiocracy Yet?
It's a quote from the movie.

If you want to look at some old ones the Seiko museum in Tokyo has a few. Entry is free and I can only recommend it.
FinnKuhn··on iCloud appears to be down for some users

FinnKuhn··on German men 18-45 need military permit for extended stays abroad
The law exists since the 1950s. It was just suspended from 2011 to 2026. The new law just reactivated the old law.
FinnKuhn··on Show HN: Apfel – The free AI already on your Mac
Ok, then it might just be pretty bad at German Sie/Du. It manages to translate texts, but is unable to change between Du and Sie. interesting limitation I haven't encountered anywhere before. Even DeepL was able to swap between them.

Here is the chat I used to test this again to highlight this limitation:

Hi John,

I hope you're doing well! I'd love to grab a coffee or meet up for a chat sometime soon. When do you have some free time this week?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

For small tasks this seems perfect. However it being limited to English from what I can tell is quite a downsite for me.
FinnKuhn··on Philly courts will ban all smart eyeglasses starting next week

FinnKuhn··on My MacBook keyboard is broken and it's insanely expensive to fix
The new MacBook Neo's keyboard is not riveted and instead held with screws. As far as I could tell it is still just as thin and light as other MacBooks.
