FilterSweep··on In a Hot Labor Market, Some Employees Are 'Ghosting' Bad Bosses
I had to blink at this headline.

It’s 2019 and it appears this headline was better fit for 5 years ago.

I work as a dev, and I still have to climb through hoops and spend money on multiple technical interviews to get hired. Friends in other industries will sometimes even have it harder.

Where are these plentiful jobs? Where is this labor market so great that employees can just walk out on a whim? This seems like NPR is out of touch.

FilterSweep··on In a Hot Labor Market, Some Employees Are 'Ghosting' Bad Bosses
When one party conducts themselves with decency, and the other doesn’t (employer), the decent one is ripe for being taken advantage of.
FilterSweep··on Companies Manipulate Glassdoor by Inflating Rankings and Pressuring Employees
A previous employer would do the same thing. They would astroturf reviews whenever they received a bad one.
FilterSweep··on Companies Manipulate Glassdoor by Inflating Rankings and Pressuring Employees
It’s far worse though.

You’re going to eat another meal in 6-24 hours. Glassdoor is affecting people’s lives and livelihoods.

FilterSweep··on Tesla haters are parking their pickup trucks at Tesla Supercharger stations
Are you certain that is true?

I would assume numbered gasoline pumps will see no change. Gas stations can attract purchases from electric car owners by providing low-cost chargers away from the pumps.

If anything, gas station owners are just capturing a new market segment.

FilterSweep··on The Commerce Department is considering national security restrictions on AI
Genuinely wondering, is that sarcasm?
FilterSweep··on The Commerce Department is considering national security restrictions on AI
Regulation is certainly needed but we can be certain it won’t be done properly.

More worrying is the fact that for every “benefit” we receive from AI (self driving cars, open source home automation), there are numerous, globally negative consequences such as discriminatory practices based off biased training data. The Chinese executive mistakened for a jaywalker is a clear example of this.

It feels like this is a train that cannot be stopped that will lead to disasterous circumstances.

FilterSweep··on Measuring the “Filter Bubble”: How Google is influencing what you click
The obvious difference being state sponsored actors from a foreign entity weaponized this “feature.”

Not sure how you’re equating the two, but it’s disingenous.

FilterSweep··on Wall Street Rule for the #MeToo Era: Avoid Women at All Cost
Yes. The optics look bad with N=2; namely, you wouldn’t have any controls over bribery or other coercion
FilterSweep··on Wall Street Rule for the #MeToo Era: Avoid Women at All Cost
You’d have to start under the presumption that he didn’t do it.

FilterSweep··on ‘I Don’t Really Want to Work for Facebook.’ Say Some Computer Science Students
This is profound because I would be surprised if the early employees at Facebook didn’t feel a bit betrayed at the direction they later went.
FilterSweep··on ‘I Don’t Really Want to Work for Facebook.’ Say Some Computer Science Students
In that same vein, social media, especially facebook, has largely been used by malactors and state-sponsored trolls as a weapon itself.

Hello, “Internet Research Agency”!

FilterSweep··on ‘I Don’t Really Want to Work for Facebook.’ Say Some Computer Science Students
Hey,(side note) Jaron Lanier has some interesting things to say about “value-added” to society!

I can’t disagree with what you’re saying, but that would also mean other roles are also overcompensated, if not even more (heh, executives)

FilterSweep··on ‘I Don’t Really Want to Work for Facebook.’ Say Some Computer Science Students
And I don’t blame them.

Developers are largely undercompensated for the utility they provide for firms, both across companies and within (compared to other roles).

In the Bay, it’s the difference between living comfortably+saving for their future and just making ends meet.

It’s a bit like blaming the scientists of the Manhattan Project for dropping the atomic bomb.

>But I don't want my taxes raised an order of magnitude to pay for everyone else.

But you’re surely fine paying your taxes into “Defense” (private, for-profit contractors) continuing wars in other destabilized regions?

I’m actually supportive of defense spending....when it’s relevant to American (or really any developed nation’s “greater” life on earth). I currently see no effort to build ICBM/EMP/Astroid/Natural disaster defenses shrug

I also have to wonder what your priorities are when your first thought is “I don’t want to pay for everyone else” instead of “where is my tax money going?”

I, too, do not want an undue yoke of taxation on my back. To be honest, no one is calling for a “magnitude” increase in your taxes. And trigger warning, America has numerous socialist policies such as Medicare/Medicaid and health coverage for your politicians (but not your fellow countrymen)

It seems far more “fake and forced” to me that our FAANG companies (and their ilk) need additional tax cuts. It seems far more “fake and forced” that income tax is so high compared to other taxes. the sudden 2016-induced claims of a “booming economy” seem more “fake and forced” in the light of no real wage growth. Our slow descent into Feudalism and lordship seems far more “fake and forced” when you look at the policies that enable it.

And If you are one of the world’s wealthiest 0.1%, let me play the worlds smallest violin for not wanting to help you press your boot down harder on the throat of the proletariat.

FilterSweep··on A new Venezuelan ID, created with China's ZTE, tracks citizen behavior
Intentionally dishonest.
FilterSweep··on A new Venezuelan ID, created with China's ZTE, tracks citizen behavior
Unfortunately I agree.

but the on my mind - is the trend toward authoritarianism due to those in power seeking lordship, or select vocal groups among the serfs seeking to be lorded?

FilterSweep··on A new Venezuelan ID, created with China's ZTE, tracks citizen behavior
Interesting.

How do you define a “socialist” country? What countries would you say are “socialist” versus “cartel driven”?

This deleted post outlines the catastrophic degree of astroturfing that riddles the sub.

FilterSweep··on Amazon Pitches Facial Recognition to Monitor Immigrants
Yikes. I’ve heard of some American citizens being mistaken for illegal immigrants and being detained with no recuse[0], I could only imagine how bad it could get if the machine errors.

FilterSweep··on The Devil Is in the Details of Project Verify’s Goal to Eliminate Passwords
I find it very troubling how small/nonexistent the outcry is over such an invasive concept.

The PR teams are already hard at work making Facebookian claims of user privacy control that were found to be grossly untrue.

I personally will need to be diligent in avoiding the firms that adopt this service at all costs.

Furthermore, you have to wonder why seemingly “competitive” entities(as far as an oligopoly goes) would collude to provide such as service. Their motives have already been demonstrated to be bad in the past.

FilterSweep··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
Your friends also gave Facebook your actual phone number too....

Facebook app abuses your phones internal Contacts API.

Effectively, you are linked and your main Facebook account is known to be a pseudonym already

FilterSweep··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
The second one person with your phone number as a contact downloads the Facebook malware app, they have given Facebook your phone number.
FilterSweep··on Can We Survive the Next Financial Crisis?
I disagree, I find the media quite seasoned at turning the working and middle classes against themselves at this point.
FilterSweep··on Trump Accuses Google of Burying Conservative News in Search Results
If you were to take Google’s “organic results” to heart this would be largely explained by the greater number of people (from all political slants) seeking out AA inventors for the sake of their online disputes.

Furthermore, to be honest, this “organic” search has largely been used to debunk racist claims. And the search has been used for over a decade.

FilterSweep··on Spyware Company Leaves ‘Terabytes’ of Selfies, Messages, Location Data Exposed
It has less to do with research, even.

Equifax, like many Fortune-N companies, has a heavily funded sales and PR team working actively against your individual research.

Should you, as an individual, apply to a company or attempt to buy a product that has been “sold” the Equifax product suite, you’re still beholden to Equifax services(or leave without the job or house).

You’re effectively stuck, unless you have the resources(time/money) to look for employers or products that stay away from Equifax.

Facebook put this burden on non-users, and they're currently arguing that this is "OK" in their probe.
FilterSweep··on Amazon warehouse workers 'peed in bottles' fearing punishment for taking breaks
> Judging from some of the comments here, software engineers working in Amazon must either be stupid or irrational to continue working there

This is sparing the employer at the expense of the employee. Employee's employment status is.....far more sticky.
