FilosofumRex··on A new bridge links the math of infinity to computer science
One, in theory, can construct number sets (fields) with holes in them - that's truly discrete numbers. such number sets are at most countably infinite, but need not be. One useful such set might have Planck's (length) constant as its smallest number beyond which there is a hole. The problem with using such number sets is that ordinary rules of arithmetic breakdown, ie division has to be defined as modulus Planck constant
FilosofumRex··on A new bridge links the math of infinity to computer science
Neither does David Deutsch himself, he stopped making sense sometime in the late 80's
FilosofumRex··on France threatens GrapheneOS with arrests / server seizure for refusing backdoors
Russia is as European as France and certainly more European than the US or Canada. Most of Europe's problems stem from trying to keep Russia out and Germany down.

The latter has worked well because Germany is, to this day, occupied by the US & the UK. But the former has never worked out and is now bankrupting the EU!

FilosofumRex··on Heretic: Automatic censorship removal for language models
There has never been more diversity - intellectual or otherwise, than now.

Just a few decades ago, all news, political/cultural/intellectual discourse, even entertainment had to pass through handful of english-only channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, NYT, WSJ, BBC, & FT) before public consumption. Bookstores, libraries and universities had complete monopoly on publications, dissemination and critique of thoughts.

LLMs are great liberator of cumulative human knowledge and there is no going back. Their ownership and control is, of course, still very problematic

FilosofumRex··on Sam Altman's pants are on fire
Chomsky and Pinker (I don't Fodor), are entertainers and their theories are good only for PhD pumpers. How human brain works and the associated neuroscience has absolutely nothing to do with LLMs which simply are empirically defined function approximations.

The problem with Sam Altman is that he is a shyster and leech feeding off the hard work of thousands of programmers and engineers.

FilosofumRex··on Learning to read Arthur Whitney's C to become smart (2024)
All great industrial apps are DSLs for specific domains, because often time end users are much smarter & craftier than developers. Some great examples: - AutoCad (vector drawing DSL on top of Lisp) - Mathematica (symbolic algebra DSL - Lisp & C) - Aspen One (Thermodynamics/Chemistry DSL on FORTRAN) - COMSOL (Multiphysics DSL C++) - Verilog (FPGA design DSL C) and also general purpose tools like Regex, XLA, CERN/Root, SQL, HTML/CSS,...
FilosofumRex··on The geometry of mathematical methods
It'd be nice to incorporate links to Demos-3D to supplement visualizations of complex number algebra and 3D vector/matrix ops: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfM6zMGnbgOHoJFFgqQ4O...
FilosofumRex··on Harvard FAS Cuts PhD Seats by More Than Half
Biology, chemical biology and parts of non-traditional chemistry, are some of the most political and elitist fields outside of social sciences. How and what is taught is not necessarily science based only, let alone, who gets in the PhD programs in the first place.

Organismic and Evolutionary Biologists, like Robert Sapolsky, are right in the middle of culture wars, and always on the same side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WwAQqWUkpI&t=4827s

FilosofumRex··on Harvard FAS Cuts PhD Seats by More Than Half
Actually by 75% in most of its grad schools. Private elite Universities are merely a front for channeling public funds to manufacture and graduate "experts" to staff elite NGOs, the Administrative State, Think Tanks and elite Consulting firms.
FilosofumRex··on J.P. Morgan's OpenAI loan is strange
The loan amount is small & revolving to be too risky for a bank the size of JPM, but undue optimism about OpenAI also isn't justified.

Google, Amazon, Apple, MSFT, Meta & Nvidia didn't face "China risk", but AI firms do. As Tik Tok saga has proven, the days of running large losses for years, to recover it all back in IPO, and monopolize thereafter, may be over.

China might win the AI race and force the hand of USG for yet another national security imperative, to expropriate foreign assets.

FilosofumRex··on x86-64 Playground – An online assembly editor and GDB-like debugger
Is there GPU assembly (PTX) version available anywhere?
FilosofumRex··on New York Times, AP, Newsmax and others say they won't sign new Pentagon rules
This is a ruse and a manufactured 'much to do about nothing"... the real source of power in America is the CIA & associated Think Tanks and Wall Street law firms - not the Pentagon, especially as far as domestic policy is concerned.

Pentagon and the Media are owned and controlled by the same military-industrial complex and always agree to disagree with each other in public.

FilosofumRex··on Language Agnostic Programming: Why you may still need code
In all likelihood, LLMs will converge towards few hardware efficient PLs and will ignore all others.

Debugging a program will become like debugging your relationships - you argue until one side gives up or both are exhausted!

FilosofumRex··on Jeff Bezos says AI is in a bubble but society will get 'gigantic' benefits
Bezos didn't define "society", but knowing Devil is what Devil does, we can infer:

1. Amazon files the most petitions for H1-B work visas after Indian IT shops. 2. Amazon opposed minimum wage increase to $15/hr until 2018! 3. Amazon not only fires union organizers, it's claiming National Labor Relations Board is unconstitutional!

FilosofumRex··on OpenTSLM: Language models that understand time series
A fun litmus test for it would be to de-trend S&P500 to its individual components and to identify and rank contributions of all 500 stocks. But that alone would not get it a job at Rentec or the NSA.

Unlike most commercial & medical applications where signals are stationary with white (uncorrelated) noise, the NSA & Rentec mostly deal with non-stationary signals with regime changes and correlated noise, which can't be denoised without loss of information.

The idea is not so much to predict the next stock price tick or to decipher an intercepted signal (most likely encrypted anyways), but rather to detect "regime changes", ie quickest detection of a change of pattern in non-stationary signals. Then the detected pattern is matched to known trading patterns for a particular stock or to the expected spy activities.

FilosofumRex··on Jane Goodall has died
Jane Goodall and the late E.O. Willson were two great treasures of humanity. They 're leaders of a generation of scientists and public intellectuals who transcendent politics and remained faithful to the motto of great citizens - lead by example.
FilosofumRex··on Clean hydrogen at a crossroads: Why methane pyrolysis deserves attention
Never trust anything written by lawyers/economics/MBAs on climate change - only analysis by chemical or mechanical engineers is worth reading.

Methane pyrolysis is an old technology from early days of oil refining for production of hydrogen & Ammonia/fertilizer/Methanol. it yields half as much H2 than SMR/ATR so it can't compete on cost, unless there is carbon tax/CO2 penalty. Also, coke produced by pyrolysis is lower quality than that produced by Delayed Coking of crude oil refining.

Most of the comments seem to confuse pyrolysis (no O2) with reforming (H2O), which produces CO2. ATR uses partial O2 & H2O and is more energy efficient & cheaper.

Commonsense should tell you e- generated by H2 can't compete with CH4, because Ch4 is the feedstock & H2 is the product!

FilosofumRex··on Nepal picks a new prime minister on a discord server days after social media ban
Discord servers and its most active users were paid NGO workers of Samata Foundation and Hami Nepal, which are very well funded NGOs by The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), which is in turn funded by the US Congress and run by the CIA
FilosofumRex··on California lawmakers pass SB 79, housing bill that brings dense housing
It's joke... MA has had an affordable housing law (chapter 40B)for over 50 years. when it was passed housing affordability was a rising problem, today it's a crisis!

Politicians are bound to the interests of property owners not those who can't afford it. Besides high density bring high crimes, and high concentrated poverty

FilosofumRex··on Corporations are trying to hide job openings from US citizens
Corporate crimes punishment is a real joke in the US. Meta/FB was fined a couple of million dollars for the same type of violations of temp work visa. I'm sure, it didn't even register on their bottom line.

We need to put execs behind bar, before they'll ever respect labor or competition laws.

FilosofumRex··on Many hard LeetCode problems are easy constraint problems
SAT & CSP are criminally under utilized in CS classes, because profs have no clue about them.

That's why in so many industries they prefer to hire engineers and OR grads and teach them python, than hire SWE and teach them modeling

FilosofumRex··on Quantum Mechanics, Concise Book
It's wrong to assume people know classical physics formalism well and then and only then, they'll learn QM!

QM pedagogy problem is, how to teach QM to people who don't know physics beyond [F= ma], and math beyond algebra, differential calculus, & virtually no probability beyond mean & std dev?

FilosofumRex··on Quantum Mechanics, Concise Book
That's not a book about QM but about "philosophy" of how QM is interpreted. Even if you master every word in it, you won't be able to do any real QM.

Besides, Einstein is just about the worst physicist to learn from on QM

FilosofumRex··on MIT Study Finds AI Use Reprograms the Brain, Leading to Cognitive Decline
This study is by Media Lab, which along with Sloan School, Econ, and newly minted Schwarzman College of Computing are not on par with the old school MIT!

Besides academics are bitter since LLMs are better at teaching than they are!

FilosofumRex··on Nvidia Tilus: A Tile-Level GPU Kernel Programming Language
seriously!!! there is so much more Nvidia and its billionaire managers can do to improve developers experience with CUDA/nvcc/PTX, instead of yet another barely functional, sparsely documented, rarely tested DSL
FilosofumRex··on NSF has suspended Terry Tao's grant
This is a patently illegal case of collective punishment by ADL/AIPAC lobby. UCLA is a public institution and should be free of political pandering.

Any alleged incidents of anti-semitism should be litigated individually, based on specific facts thereof, and if proven, then appropriate sanctions imposed on the guilty parties, only.

FilosofumRex··on Mathematics for Computer Science (2024)
Explore use of LLM instead of passive viewing of videos. Pass the link to LLM and ask to summarize it and generate a synopsis and quiz you. We don't learn from lectures, we learn from problem solving

Also, be modest and assume you're dumber than you think you are - start with courses where you already know at least 50% of materials covered.

FilosofumRex··on Genocide VC
The question is why are there so many pathological psychopaths in the VC business?
FilosofumRex··on Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Gains Momentum in the U.S.
Interestingly, Trump just bombed Iran's nukes program, but his EO demands at least 20 civil nuclear deals, internationally. Who might be these 20 countries?
FilosofumRex··on Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Gains Momentum in the U.S.
Does anyone know of a good engineering level reference on Silex/GLE or general/commercial scale laser based separation. Most search results just show descriptive write ups.
