Recently graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology in NJ, right next to NYC - CS bachelor's degree with a minor in philosophy. Worked with Node.js, Vue.js, and Postgres in the web ecosystem, plus a bit of PHP and React; I use Python for everyday scripting and a heavier language (C++ or Java) for larger tasks. I'm currently working with a professor on writing a mobile (responsive) version of an existing web app and fixing legacy PHP code.

Always excited to try new languages, frameworks, methodologies - you name it. I love to learn new things and branch out.

Fej··on Emails Reveal Why Steve Jobs and Phil Schiller Blocked In-App Kindle Purchases
This article buries the lede, which should be at the top. It states:

> Yesterday, further emails published by the U.S. antitrust subcommittee revealed that Apple offered Amazon lower App Store fees to convince it to launch its Prime Video app on the App Store and Apple TV.

> The news that Apple made exceptions for Amazon for Kindle prior to 2011 and for Prime Video has caused confusion among some observers, as Apple has consistently claimed it treats every developer the same. Phil Schiller stated ahead of the antitrust inquiry this week that all apps in the App Store have been treated "the same - one set of rules for everybody, no special deals, no special terms, no special code, everything applies to all developers the same."

Phil Schiller was rather dishonest - implying that it always been this way, when it clearly has not. If his statement was identical to how MacRumors writes - the words "have been" are outside the direct quote from Schiller, where he could have said "are" in the present tense - then it was an outright lie. Not a good look in an era of renewed antitrust scrutiny.

Fej··on YouTube to end community captions feature and deaf creators aren’t happy
It looks like it will still be possible, but only through a paid third-party service.

I suppose Google thinks auto-captions are enough to satisfy the ADA. We'll see.

Fej··on Firefox push[ing] irrelevant notifications
I love Firefox, and believe it's vitally important for an open web, but Mozilla has been shooting themselves in the foot. People don't pay attention to all the positive new features and news, they pay attention to negative coverage like this.

And of course spam from any app is unacceptable without signing up prior, especially including a browser of all things, but that's pretty much a given.

Fej··on Ask HN: I want to make school more afforadable
Private universities in the US charge more than double that. Public ones, usually much less for in-state students, but it depends.
Fej··on Your DS18B20 temperature sensor is likely a fake, counterfeit, clone
I have one of these, purchased from Adafruit - they're not an authorized distributor but they're certainly reputable. My unit works fine but I haven't tested it yet... anyone else bought from them?
Fej··on Robert's Rules of Order (1876)
Robert's Rules knows that everyone doesn't read all of it - this is why the chair is given the responsibility of helping members of an assembly formulate their motions when they aren't sure how to do so. There's even a specific motion, "parliamentary inquiry", for help understanding the rules.

Fej··on Comcast, Mozilla strike privacy deal to encrypt DNS lookups in Firefox
Even archive.today has given up on that crusade; I noticed a few days ago that they don't block me anymore (I use Cloudflare DNS) so they have to have stopped within the past couple weeks.

So now AFAIK the number of sites that block DNS resolvers which do not forward edns-client-subnet is zero. As it should be.

Fej··on macOS Big Sur Preview
It does not appear to have a Metal backend - just OpenGL and Vulkan.

From what I can tell, commercial game devs treat Mac gaming as an edge case and mostly only the large engine devs care about Metal support (with exceptions, of course).

Fej··on Ask HN: Why do you still use HN?
Perhaps due to its connections to business, some influential people hang around HN. For example, once I got a response from the CEO of Namecheap (my web host) in a thread related to their services. It was very informative and I can't imagine getting that kind of interaction anywhere else.

You don't get that on places like reddit because the standard of discourse is generally lower and it's not worth their time.

Also: the moderators are consistent, clear, professional, and easy to talk to.

Fej··on PCSX2 PS2 Emulator: Progress report Q3 2019 to Q1 2020
PCSX2 is a really nice piece of software and often gets overshadowed by more popular emulators, it's really nice to see the devs getting some attention. The feats they've accomplished are substantial - I'd go so far to say that it's the best way to play many PS2 games.
Fej··on Windows Terminal v1.0 Release Candidate is out as version 0.11.1251.0
I've been using it and it's a great improvement over the standard Windows console. Will it be included with the OS in the future?

Fej··on On WD Red NAS Drives
Who got the 3.5" part of HGST? Wikipedia says Toshiba, but WD is selling drives under the Ultrastar name, not Toshiba.

I mean, where do you go for reliable storage at this point?

Fej··on ‘It looks like a war zone’: NJ docs say hospitals under siege, supplies low
I live in Bergen County. There is a lack of panic - although I'm on the north side, opposite of the most infected parts.

I went grocery shopping earlier today, there were a few people with masks but no one was really trying to keep a distance from others. Plenty of people there, perhaps a few less than usual. At times there are so many people that they have to restrict entry into the store and create a line outside (possibly to help with social distancing, but there are still too many people in the store for that to matter). It's the opposite of social distancing.

The disaster in NYC, and the counties immediately north/east of Bergen (Westchester, Rockland) is going to spill over. We're not going to be able to handle it and we don't have the clout of NY to push for more resources.

In a recent video, 3Blue1Brown wrote "The only thing to fear is a lack of fear itself." This is what worries me. My parents are at risk as long-time smokers and if Valley runs out of ventilators and PPE, our major/usual option is out.

Fej··on Covid-19 projects looking for volunteers
> In roughly 2-3 weeks, the epicenter locations of this disease in the US are going to run out of hospital beds.

This sounds right, but do you have a source on the 2-3 weeks number? I found a source regarding hospital bed shortages, but it does not specify a number that concrete.

Fej··on Engineered healthier sugar that tastes good
Is it true that there is a genetic disposition to altered taste of low-calorie sweeteners? If it's real, I have it - most of them taste terrible to me, and leave an unpleasant aftertaste on top of that.

Fej··on Why the Gov.uk Design System team changed the input type for numbers
Does anyone know what's going on with the Firefox implementation of inputmode, especially for Android? There isn't much on Bugzilla about it.
Fej··on Windows 10 live tiles reportedly getting killed by Microsoft
I use custom tiles to display art of Steam games, which makes my Start menu look quite nice, but I acknowledge that's a niche use. The tiles open their respective games.

The weather and calendar widgets are useful. Not a whole lot else though, in my experience.

Fej··on Japan ‘to build 20GW of coal-fired capacity over next decade’ (2019)
Here's a source for your claim that nuclear is cleaner than (just about) everything else:

https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2018/02/ipcc_wg3_ar5...

if anyone wants. It blew my mind that nuclear is more than three times cleaner than solar, and on par with wind. (This was posted elsewhere here on HN.)

Those numbers don't include batteries, which afaik is an unsolved problem anyway, so if you include those then nuclear becomes cleaner than everything else.

Fej··on Sonos sues Google for allegedly stealing smart speaker tech
> The lawsuit cites numerous news reports that point out similarities between Google’s new product features and systems that Sonos had already pioneered, including synchronizing audio across groups of speakers, adjusting the group volume, and setting up devices on a local wireless network.

This makes Sonos sound like a common patent troll. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

I remember iTunes doing synchronized audio well years ago and Sonos didn't make a peep.
