FearlessNebula··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
I’m convinced I got into FAANG last year because of overhiring. Even if I get layed off, a year of FAANG on my resume is a blessing
FearlessNebula··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
> they actually employ A TON of ad sales people

Why? Don’t customers submit their own ads to Google?

You think they chose an Indian CEO to appeal to the Indian market? I can’t imagine they’d make such a huge decision over a factor like that.
FearlessNebula··on Google to reduce workforce by 12k
> People like Jeff Dean or Demis Hassabis are the kind of people who can make me stop everything I'm doing and listen to them when they say that the company should go into a direction.

I wonder if maybe these people are too principled to spy on people to the extent that Google does to profit the way they do. Maybe they select for a CEO who is talented, but also driven by money enough to prioritize that at all costs.

FearlessNebula··on Microsoft held an invite-only concert for execs, 1 day before announcing layoffs
I work at Microsoft and I have many peers upset about this. By the time they realized they needed layoffs it was probably too late to get their money back on the concert anyways.

FearlessNebula··on Plastic to Oil – Produces 80% Oil
How do people ever consume that without immediately getting sick?
FearlessNebula··on New Mac Mini
Quite a bit IMO. My Mac Mini is silent, even my gaming PC with expensive BeQuiet fans doesn’t stay silent. My Mac Mini also outputs no noticeable heat (although in the winter I kinda wish it did)

Serious question, what difference does ECC make on a laptop? I thought it’s only useful on a server or for situations that are critical (aircraft computer).
FearlessNebula··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
They’re not much more expensive than a Windows laptop of similar specs and quality. AppleCare is fairly cheap if you’re concerned about damage.

FearlessNebula··on Four thousand weeks
That’s a good point. Whenever I’ve felt existential dread it’s been soothing to know I can improve myself and live life in a better way. However if you’re already in what you consider to be an ideal state, you don’t have any wiggle room. And with a wife and kids on top, you have others who depend on you and also your own attachment to those people, which makes it all the more difficult to acknowledge that life is finite. All of the above which I haven’t experienced for myself.
FearlessNebula··on Four thousand weeks
This makes me wonder if any books have been written about Toyota’s engineering practices / just in time production / production and logistics in general. I’m sure it would be fascinating.
FearlessNebula··on Four thousand weeks
It’s funny, I also found this inspiring and thoughtful but for almost the exact opposite reason. I never feel overwhelmed (not that I’d like to), and feel like I’m letting life pass by while I do meaningless crap. I don’t want to work for the sake of work, I want to do great work because of the enjoyment it brings me to learn cool things and work on complex systems. I don’t want to waste more time on Reddit, I want to spend that time on a hobby, or exercise, or learning something.
FearlessNebula··on Four thousand weeks
Tbh I don’t think you understood the goal of this post. The idea, to me, is to remind the reader of how precious life is, and to be mindful of how you’re spending it. Whether you think about it or try to ignore it, time is ticking by at the same speed. I’m only 25 but I’ve wasted way too much time on Reddit, YouTube, and even HN, in my opinion.

> As with all things, moderation.

Sure, but in my anecdotal experience the vast majority of people are spending more time on YouTube than what their own values would permit. And also anecdotally, people who experience more existential dread seem to be those who realize they aren’t living their life quite the way they’d like to.

FearlessNebula··on Reasons Python Sucks (2018)
Even the title, to me, indicates that the article is going to be lousy. Rather than saying “reasons why I don’t like Python”, they present the title as if Python is objectively bad, which obviously isn’t true.
FearlessNebula··on Strava hikes monthly subscription price
I’m not their target user so I’m pretty ignorant but I have to wonder - what else can they add? Would people complain just as much if they were “moving fast and breaking things”? Maybe they need to raise the price to avoid layoffs many other companies have been doing.

Just playing devils advocate

FearlessNebula··on Big meat can’t quit antibiotics
In what world is providing insight into an ethically questionable business comparable to revealing someone’s private home? Businesses are held to higher levels of accountability.
FearlessNebula··on The Computer Science Book (2020)
This book seems perfect for me. I have a CS bachelors but didn’t always do well in some classes. I’ve been thinking about doing teach yourself cs .com but this book seems better for me because it’s more shallow which means I can get a broad refresher of my degree in a few months instead of a year or two or three.
FearlessNebula··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
A loan from the bank is very different than a service or subscription with the manufacturer to me
FearlessNebula··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
Yep:)

Andrew Huberman recently had a Harvard educated psychiatrist on the podcast. This psychiatrist specialized in treatment resistant mental health conditions. He was trying to help a patient lose weight and inadvertently found it helped their psychiatric symptoms as well. Fast forward 5 years and he had written a book, and the tl;dr is that he has seen many patients improve their conditions be going low / no carb. For patients with less extreme disease they can often get by with low carb and eliminate fructose but keep some healthy complex carbs in their diets. Seriously ill patients may benefit more from full ketosis. In any case, he often reports patients are able to reduce or sometimes eliminate medications on this diet which helps when they have trouble with the side effect profiles.
FearlessNebula··on The New Smoking (2021)
Totally agree with this principle although that’s not what drives me to use my phone. I have a very generous amount of free time for my age, and I squander it for some reason.
FearlessNebula··on The New Smoking (2021)
For me I can’t even say I’m using it to escape negative thoughts, it’s just a compulsion. I pull my phone out and scroll when I pee. Yep, apparently I can’t even have 1 minute of downtime without my hand automatically reaching for my pocket.
FearlessNebula··on The New Smoking (2021)
I think this could be a really helpful tool. Whenever I find myself having a compulsion (check my phone, order fast food, skip the gym) I try my best to make myself wait 10-15 minutes (depending on the circumstances) and most of the time I’m no longer interested because I’m thinking more clearly. Very much applies to shopping as well. Do I really need a new laptop? Let’s see how I feel next week, there’s always another sale.
FearlessNebula··on The New Smoking (2021)
The real question for me is how do we fix it? Both at the societal level but especially at the personal level for me I’ve been aware of this habit but unable to kick it for years now.
FearlessNebula··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential (2021)
Many options, should you decide to leave the Apple ecosystem
FearlessNebula··on Why Evernote failed to realize its potential (2021)
Wait… Apple is providing support via Discord now?

Anyways, if you have access to a Mac you can sync your notes via iCloud and then on Mac you can easily access the SQLite DB containing the notes. If you can figure out the schema it would be easy to write a tool to export this automatically. I’d guess someone has already built such a tool.

FearlessNebula··on Apple Execs on iMessage for Android (2013)
Are the $150 phones slow? I’ve never tried a Moto but the $150 Samsung I tried was so slow it was nearly unusable.
