Espionage724··on Intel's GPU Drivers Now Collect Telemetry, Including 'How You Use Your Computer'
It's not spying. Spying implies being observed without consent, and that the adversary is gaining information to use against you. The average person who is using Windows and likely the only ones to see this do not fall under this.

People were unwilling to volunteer the data exactly because of this fear-mongering. Ya'll act like Intel is sitting in a back room watching flowing logcats of your activity and cherry-picking ones to target you personally, as if some of ya'll are that important lmao :p

Espionage724··on Intel's GPU Drivers Now Collect Telemetry, Including 'How You Use Your Computer'
No, not like that at all lmao

Just wait until you hear about your cursor being tracked on pages and what images and positions on the site you hover and stop scrolling over :p

Intel isn't giving my browser data to enemies of the state. What do you really think Intel is doing with this information?

And yeah, website URLs are important since people want to bootstrap and toss WebGL all over the place needlessly; all that is GPU accelerated. Blame anyone not using a plain-text website.

Espionage724··on Intel's GPU Drivers Now Collect Telemetry, Including 'How You Use Your Computer'
KDE is not relevant or even heard of aside from people on Arch forums and more isolated communities. Heck the rare times I've seen Linux in the wild, guess what DE they were using? It's the one that's actually used by mainstream Linux distros, and even outside of GNOME, I even saw a wild Ubuntu terminal running Unity about a week ago. KDE should stop assisting with fragmenting Linux, or get the DE up-to-par for mainsream distros to use :p

Meanwhile, guess what's the most popular operating systems for workstation use is. You're implying everyone using Windows willingly is dumb and being inefficient. Dolphin works, so does Explorer, Nautilus, and even Thunar. Only two of those are relevant for most people.

Espionage724··on Intel's GPU Drivers Now Collect Telemetry, Including 'How You Use Your Computer'
How is that a problem? Nobody is reviewing open-source driver code aside from the people actually working on improving it.

Also lmao; do you really believe Intel is going to sabotage their own platform? If you're doing something so "nefarious and underhanded" on your computer for that to be a concern, you likely have no reason to be concerned since you should be using a platform and OS that makes this a non-issue. Only bad-actors would be concerned and raise this as a point.

Espionage724··on Intel's GPU Drivers Now Collect Telemetry, Including 'How You Use Your Computer'
Lmao. Anyone who cares about this likely isn't using Windows to begin with, and has already fallen into some Parabola Trisquel rabbit hole.

Microsoft isn't crippling their user experience considering that doesn't benefit them; it's bad-actors cultivating that idea to push people on less-secure platforms, and/or naive Arch Linux first-time installer bros that want to push the idea of a worst desktop experience everywhere for no deep reason.

Microsoft doing whatever they're doing to Windows benefits the average person who otherwise isn't going to deep lengths to improve their security and experience. I want more people to be as-secure as possible considering they'll become bot net contributors otherwise, or leak data that I share with them in some manner.

Espionage724··on Intel's GPU Drivers Now Collect Telemetry, Including 'How You Use Your Computer'
Great!

I want Intel to improve the driver stack I use on my hardware, and if information how I use their graphics stack is useful for that, cool. I continue on my usual usage, and Intel gets data on how to improve the experience for free.

How does anyone expect software to improve if nobody gives feedback? Ya'll know those website surveys, bug report apps in GPU control panels? If people used those, maybe secret telemetry wouldn't be required. It's easier to complain vaguely online in random communities.

Data collection isn't going away. Nor is it inherently harmful, unless you feed into the idea you're intentionally using hostile hardware and software for some reason.

Espionage724··on Every Phone Should Be Able to Run Personal Website
Couldn't you run Termux, pick a distro, install it with proot or something, and then host any servers you want?

It seems like unforeseen complexity from that would come from mobile providers allowing the ports needed, and DDNS; if you want it public.

Although I wonder if something wild like hosting a server at a known location (VPS), using a VPN from your phone to that server, and then having DDNS and all that go to that server and be forwarded (proxy?) to the phone? Can maybe even set something up to show site viewers the page isn't available until you connect back to wifi if your phone isn't connected to the VPN or if the server can't proxy the requests to it.

Espionage724··on Forcing your computer to rat you out
If the crazy uncle is interested in socializing more, they can see how their social-media behavior influences that. If they lose followers, friends, or if it escalates to platform bans and restrictions, that can be data used to realize that that behavior is... anti-social. So if they're interested in socializing more, they change that anti-social behavior.

If they aren't interested in socializing more and just want to get their believes out there to as many people who are willing to listen, the social media platform absolutely does not have to tolerate that and should shut them right down. This will be evident by the loss of followers, friends, and eventual platform restrictions and ban. People that want to change will do so before the ban, and people that don't will get banned, and find some other community to try to be a part of; that glorious 5-person self-hosted Mastodon server nobody has heard of :p

Having a real-name attached to a public social media profile makes people think twice about associating themselves with less-than-mainstream views, publicly. Anti-social behavior isn't tolerated mainstream, and it's not hard to figure out what other kinds of communities fall under this.

I fully support employers scraping public social media platforms to determine if employees are a fit for their company. Don't like it? Don't work for em, or change your public views. Other people, platforms, and companies do not have to tolerate your views; you have that first-amendment right in the US to say your opinion, can choose to exercise it publicly, and thus choose to accept the repercussions that come with that.

Yeah it would suck if I was working at a company, said something not ideal on a social media platform, and got fired. Yeah I'd be upset. What's the problem? Most for-profit companies don't screen employees, train them, integrate them into their workforce, and then fire them for dumb reasons.

If someone has a scenario that doesn't match any of that, share it as I'd be more interested in a different view that doesn't come down to bigoted people being entitled.

Espionage724··on Forcing your computer to rat you out
"...The Zuckerberg Doctrine claims that forcing people to use their own names is a way to ensure civility. This is an idea so radioactively wrong, it can be spotted from orbit."

The idea isn't wrong and there are certainly people who will think twice about anti-social behavior if their real name is attached to it.

The only issue here is that some people think they're entitled to use a pseudonym online on somebody else's platform that doesn't want them to. Ya'll need to go spin up a 5-person Mastodon server to echo-chamber a bit and hopefully learn you're behavior isn't acceptable to most for reasons that go well beyond you thinking you're a victim.

And for the few people who want to use a pseudonym online for reasons beyond anti-social behavior, FB has tools to protect your account notably for journalist. I get you'll have to use someone else's platform for communications at times, but FB has no interest in quelling this and you should just do what you need to do without trying to publicly sway opinion for likely other and hopefully unrelated anti-social reasons. FB is a social network, not the front page of the internet, and they have their own position to uphold that is beyond its users and clearly documented in TOS that people like pretending doesn't exist or cherry-picking to promote victim-hood.

FB and Zuck are not some boogieman out to get people lol, and there's plenty of different platforms to do whatever it is you need to do safely, or not at all.

Espionage724··on “1.1.1.1 is now handling more than 1.3T requests per day”
If you want to involve another 3rd-party in your data collections, also choose DNS NOT provided by your ISP.

My ISP has an interest in keeping me online and naturally need to provide their own DNS servers that work well-enough to not question. A 3rd-party DNS's interest is in people using it because...?

Espionage724··on Mozilla VPN: CVE-2023-4104: vpndaemon wrongly implements Polkit authentication
You either use Firefox, Edge (fork of Chrome), or Chrome today. Serious companies and the average person only use Chrome or Edge. Anyone serious about privacy is using Tor. Hipsters acting like they're serious about privacy are compiling Firefox or Chromium from source.

"Selling users off" only matters to anyone trying to push some unheard of and less-secure forks of Chrome or Firefox. Nobody notable code-reviews theses browsers, you're at the mercy at some random person or small group to play catch-up with upstream browsers, and you're ultimately still locked into somebody else's decisions.

I use Firefox because double-clicking code one-liners from my wiki doesn't add a newline when pasted into Terminals on Linux, which I use on desktop for the challenge of it. Windows Terminal on Windows doesn't have this issue from any browser and I'm free to use Edge or Chrome there.

Espionage724··on Coming Soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs
I think getting information about devices in and connected to the system would be easier from Linux; might be nice for device and board programming or diagnosing USB devices.

I don't remember specifics but terminal use felt odd on macOS to me. I do Terminal no problem from Linux, but maybe it was the file structure or command syntax on macOS that felt different.

Niche hardware stuff is likely cheaper to manage on Linux. I had to buy SwitchResX to set a higher resolution for my monitor, but I can do it from kernel parameter (video=), xrandr, or EDID override all for free on Linux.

eGPUs acted notably differently from macOS vs Linux on the same laptop, and iirc it had to do with the Apple firmware doing something differently when booting non-macOS. I preferred it on Linux because it shut-off the iGPU completely but required full shutdowns to switch to internal; hot-swap worked fine from macOS even on unsupported TB2. Iirc there was also some EFI binary that could be booted first before Linux in order to trick the Apple firmware in keeping macOS-specific config, and I kept that on a flash drive to boot from the rare times when I wanted dual graphics. Windows was even more different in that the eGPU straight up didn't work.

Espionage724··on Apple stole $100s from me, Customer Service says there's nothing they can do
Ok I get what the title's purpose is, but that implied something totally different than what I actually read.

Yeah you lose access to the content you technically rent from Apple if your account gets disabled. Same with other major providers. Go to your financial department and refund it, but even they would be doing you a favor since you've agreed to the provider's terms.

Espionage724··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
It looks like I was wrong to assume the subreddit had any sort of official status from Mozilla. It'd be nice if they came right out and disowned any association of that subreddit drama though.
Espionage724··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
It seems my assumption was wrong that the subreddit had any kind of official status from Mozilla.
Espionage724··on Transform your Android device into a Linux desktop
A Quest 2 wouldn't have the power to run a VR app and floating window; it has a hard enough time trying to run a browser and flat game just from Home with virtual environment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPmphsTu0U4
Espionage724··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
Unless Mozilla takes a similar stance in-accordance to their own guidelines, yeah: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/about/governance/policies/part...

At the least I expected some public disassociation with the subreddit, and subsequent forks of it.

Espionage724··on Transform your Android device into a Linux desktop
A cooler use for this is with Meta Quest VR headsets. Pair a keyboard and mouse to it, side-load productivity apps and you have literal floating freeform windows that only you can see (wider customization availability and privacy). Termux should work perfectly word-for-word from that guide on Quest 2.

My favorite distro also has similar notes: https://fedoramagazine.org/how-to-install-and-update-fedora-...

I speed-run every install; how else would I improve anything about it? :p

https://wiki.realmofespionage.xyz/distros:fedora_workstation...

Fresh Fedora installs involve me opening Terminal, Firefox, going to that page, and copy/pasting commands. I can reproduce my set-up in less than an hour.

Espionage724··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
Come on, nobody knowing what HSTS is would need help turning it off for localhost especially if they can even string that sentence together; I got that from the title and expected a funny story of stuff breaking. The fix being mentioned is nice too.
Espionage724··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
Firefox subreddit took part in that blackout nonsense when I was trying to find details about a flag; forget anything to do with Mozilla if they're for hiding information a whim; the API changes didn't even involve Mozilla in any manner

I was also a little irked at a bugzilla response about a request to allow importing local bookmark files on Firefox for Android asking who would would really use it. For real a privacy-respecting browser can't figure out why someone would want to not use their half-broken online sync? If Chromium had that, I'd have been off Firefox that same day.

Espionage724··on Help I accidently enabled HSTS on localhost
That site loads fine for me in Firefox.

I like how Seattle has their own ordinance site; I don't know how other places do it, but the town I'm in uses eCode360

Espionage724··on ThreeUK blocks access to encrypted provider Tutanota due to 'age restriction'
I went to check my Tutanota email and found it was deleted. I haven’t logged into it maybe 2 years. They may have notices and warnings about this, but I’m not too confident in recommending them to others.

Checked Protonmail which I made around the same time and also didn’t log into for about 2 years, and still had my account and emails. Same with that one meme email provider that starts with a C lol (I have a firemail.cc address), and I’m more surprised at them still being around and maintaining my account.

Espionage724··on Never used a VPN before, is there a good one to use?
I used VPN.ac because they aren’t based in 14-eyes. They have OpenVPN, Wireguard, and other protocols available.

I’ve had no trouble with stability, nor any complaints the entire time of my 2-year subscription and I was connected to it probably 90% of the time. They would be my first choice if I wanted a VPN provider.

Espionage724··on Twitter has banned Mastodon links in name and bio for being “malware”
I use Friendica for posting to Twitter and if that happens my Twitter profile would be gone real quick. Now that’ll have me regularly checking my posts though lol
Espionage724··on Twitter has banned Mastodon links in name and bio for being “malware”
Twitter has become a platform I want to avoid actively using because of this. I was on the fence for a little while now.

I host a Friendica instance and have my messages auto-post to Twitter, so that’s my extent of me using Twitter for now. I wouldn’t be surprised if the API for that disappears eventually, and that would remove the last reason I have for even having a profile.

Espionage724··on What do you use for knowledge management?
I use DokuWiki; here’s my instance: https://wiki.realmofespionage.xyz/
