EmilyHughes··on Oracle lays off more than 200 California-based workers
They basically saved Java when they bought it, tons of great features and quick updates nowadays. There was almost zero innovation for about a decade while it was with Sun.
EmilyHughes··on MAR1D: First-Person Mario
Correct. That's why this game is 3D and not 1D.
EmilyHughes··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
If you have more trust in a shady private company than your own government it's time to move to another country.
EmilyHughes··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
You would always be able to switch to whatever service you like for further messaging, a non-profit the wouldn't care about keeping you on their app. Why would you have intimate conversations on a dating site anyway.
EmilyHughes··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
You people take it to far. I am not talking about some dystopian government that forces marriages to create some kind of super-citizen.

I just want the incentive of making profit removed and provide a decent service that does what it promises. If that service can only be provided at a loss (which seems to be the case) then let the state do it. Nobody would force anyone to use it.

EmilyHughes··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
I don't get it. Why does no government anywhere run a non-profit dating site from tax-payer money when this is becoming the most popular way people are meeting?

All the options people have are using toxic apps which entire business model is to undermine the self-esteem of young men and scamming them out of their money. And then people wonder where the mental health problems and mass shootings come from.

I really don't understand how this stuff is still not regulated anywhere, it's a dangerous scam.

EmilyHughes··on DALL·E 2 vs. $10 Fiverr Commissions
It's still stupid. This is like asking DALL-E to generate an image that solves a math equation step by step. Of course this is easier for a human to do.

Try getting a landscape in the style of vincent van gogh for 10$ on fiver though. AI will give you that in seconds easily, and that's what's amazing about it.

EmilyHughes··on Imagen Video: high definition video generation with diffusion models
Yeah man, great take. Should we drop a nuke on a city or open source DALL-E ? Seems about equally destructive.
EmilyHughes··on Why modern software is slow
I also don't dig the look of these apps compared to the clean GUI of Windows 2000 for example. I understand everything needs to be big and vectorized because of 4k displays, touchscreens and whatever else, but it always feels like these apps are running on Flash.
EmilyHughes··on Make-A-Video: AI system that generates videos from text
These particle physics are still needed. We generally assume the dream you have at night does not take place within a whole universe, yet it is still governt by some rules - for example you may experience gravity within your dream and understand that to move around when actually there isn't any gravity but it seems like it is.

It's equally important to understand and study the rules of this waking dream you are having while reading, not because there are actually atoms out there but because it behaves like there are. You can do physics without metaphysics, altough the two usually get entangled somewhat.

EmilyHughes··on Make-A-Video: AI system that generates videos from text
Sounds good because it seems like it explains what our reality is, but it really doesn't. It just pushes the fundamental problem up X simulations into the supposed "real reality". It also assumes that simply simulating a universe would generate consciouss beings which nobody knows the answer to, but my guess is that it would not.
EmilyHughes··on Color fonts on Google Fonts
Only the arabic ones look decent. The latin ones remind me of word cliparts.
EmilyHughes··on Is the psychedelic therapy bubble about to burst?
That's my point. OP reduced the effectivenes of psychedelics down to just being able to feel good for a short while.

Well do some cocaine and you'd feel great for about an hour but nobody cured their depression that way.

EmilyHughes··on Is the psychedelic therapy bubble about to burst?
going by that logic cocaine and heroin should also treat depression in the same way, but they clearly don't.
EmilyHughes··on The mental Universe (2005) [pdf]
Particles and waves are mental. What was the dream you had last night made up of? Maybe you dreamt of running scientific experiments and finding atoms, would that get you any nearer to the metaphysical truth of what that particular dream is made up of?

Consider you never stopped dreaming when you woke up, the dream just shifted into a more concrete and physical state. But there is no physical you sleeping in some higher reality.

Mind is the rock bottom.

EmilyHughes··on TruffleC: A C implementation on top of JVM (2014)
yeah but in most cases it's better to just rewrite everything fresh. it's more of quick fix to me.
EmilyHughes··on TruffleC: A C implementation on top of JVM (2014)
Mostly migration of legacy programs probably, so companies can say they ported their stuff to java. It's stupid but companies do it.
EmilyHughes··on Why does anything exist?
What you call change is the concept impermanence in buddhism. You had an insight into impermanence.
EmilyHughes··on No More “Insight Porn”
Why does everything have to be some kind "porn" nowadays. Does anybody seriously think this is funny?
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
No it doesn't - that's my daily routine. I just microdose on some days on top of it.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
You could argue that. there is no clear line of course, but most people would agree that a beer influences them more than aspirin or an antibiothic.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
Anything that influences your psyche in an obvious way.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
easier said than done. But you are right of course, that's where you want to go.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
psychoactive drugs are a whole different category. You bring your whole mental baggage with you when you take them, unlike aspirin.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
sure, it's just the cherry on top on some days. You don't microdose and lay on your couch eating McDonalds, would feel wrong to me. Stacking all the good stuff has a nice synergy.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
depends on your individual sensitivity to psychedelics, 0.2 would be too much for me to go into work, no visuals but a head trip. I also know plenty of people who can take 0.5 and don't feel much.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
It can be a "party drug" if you dose low, especially if you are chilling at a bar with friends. Just pushes you into a slightly better mood. I'll rather have a microdose with some beers than getting shitfaced drunk, feels subjectively healthier to me.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
Trust me I tried all kinds of drugs and psychedelics are not the kind that get you hooked. Stimulants are especially addictive in my opinion. Psychs are the kind of drugs you say I have enough for a while if you overdo. On top of it they build tolerance immediately.
EmilyHughes··on Microdosing with psilocybin mushrooms: a double-blind placebo-controlled study
Been doing it for some months on & off, this shit is legit. Altough 0,5g has me tripping so I rarely dose above 100 milligrams.

Get up early, do a workout, take cold shower, meditate and then pop a microdose shrooms, feels great. Microdosing is like steroids for meditation.

Especially helpful for the programmer logic types of people like me, gets you out of your head for some time and helps you connect with your emotions and body.

EmilyHughes··on Under anesthesia, where do our minds go?
It's adding nothing to the physical laws - it's metaphysics.
