Ellipsis753··on A Tale of Two Zippers
I find these kind of articles very interesting. It's interesting the play you get between "too expensive" and "worth the extra money".

It's interesting to see what's considered worth the extra effort.

Ellipsis753··on YouTube now defaults to HTML5 video
Am I the only one that noticed: "<h2> Moving to <iframe> embeds</h2>" I'm not entirely sure if it's a little joke or genuine mistake?

Regardless, this is absolutely great. I haven't had flash for a while now and so it makes me happy to feel that HTML5 really is a valid replacement for most things.

Ellipsis753··on In Canada, find a penny, recycle it
Interesting. I wonder if anyone will fill empty warehouses with them and just sit tight and wait until they're no longer considered currency and so can be melted down (legally)?
Ellipsis753··on New generic top-level domains
Whenever I see new top-level domains I can't help but think that the internet would probably be nicer without any top-level domains at all. You can still always buy a sub-domain from someone.

Failing that, does anyone know if any of these top-level domains are to be sold cheaper? ".cheap" is actually not any cheaper than normal but a ".end" or something which cost only $2 a year might be pretty cool. Of course it'd be even easier to swat but you shouldn't have any problems if you use a long domain name.

Ellipsis753··on New generic top-level domains
I'd assume you'd lose your domain. If you're lucky someone else might pick up the gTLD and you could probably keep it then.
Ellipsis753··on "If you have tourists stay overnight, report this to the government"
A fine of 250 euros is actually pretty lacks given that they are unlikely to enforce this heavily.

I would think that I and many other people would be quite happy to risk that. What do other people think?

Ellipsis753··on Dozens of teenagers are now tweeting bomb jokes to American Airlines
I don't think so. I found these two very amusing even:

"@AmericanAir hello my name is Ibrahim I think you guys are the BOMB!!!!!!"

"@SouthwestAir I bake really good pies and my friends call me ″the bomb” am I still allowed to fly?"

Ellipsis753··on Why 9:41 AM is always the time displayed on iPhones and iPads
Fair enough. Yes. I guess I guess I can understand it being nice to always use a standard time.

It would be really awesome if whenever there was an advert on TV if the iPhone showed the current time. However with the scheduling of TV ads I don't think this is really possible.

Ellipsis753··on Why 9:41 AM is always the time displayed on iPhones and iPads
Hehe. Interesting and kind of strange. If it's so important that the screen-shot shows the current time when it is displayed why not just have it show the correct time with a program? It doesn't seem like that would be terribly difficult.
Ellipsis753··on The MIT Lockpicking Guide
It's just text so hopefully it should be able to stay up.

However I really like backing up things and making a local mirror so I'm not going to stop you. I hate it when something interesting like this vanishes from the internet and it turns out no one has a copy.

So I'm hosting a copy of it for you and anyone else that would like to help preserve it. I just downloaded the copy with:

"wget --mirror --page-requisites --no-parent --convert-links --no-parent --wait=5 --random-wait -U "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14" -e robots=off --progress=bar --level=8 --referer=$2 $1"

Here's a copy I just put on my server: http://www.ifnotequal.com/The-MIT-Lockpicking-Guide-Mirror/m...

I've included a download for it (also hosted on my server) at the top of that page. It's only 290.5KiB.

All the best and enjoy.

Ellipsis753··on Extend Python 2.7 life till 2020
I just thought I'd like to know what Hacker News thinks. Will Python 2.x ever die?

I'm still writing lots of code with it and even quite a lot of new code. It's been around for ages and it feels like almost no libraries have been ported to 2.x yet. On a couple of occasions I've started a project with Python 3.x just to drop it or move to Python 2.x as a library I need doesn't seem to exist for Python 3.x and I don't want to port it over myself. I've never had this issue with 2.x (no libraries support 3.x only.)

Most Python 3.x "killer features" have been back-ported to Python 2.x and I honestly feel little reason to upgrade myself now. When support for Python 2.7 is officially dropped we could fork it and continue. I would hope it wouldn't take huge amount of effort for some people to support it? Just fix bugs and security issues and take pull requests? In that way might Python 2.x even outlive Python 3.x or at least remain more popular?

Ellipsis753··on Borgata casino lawsuit: Phil Ivey cheated, won $9.6M?
From the article it looks like he admits it?
Ellipsis753··on Experiment: Eliminating Toast Sweat
Also I'd be interested to know how the room temperature affects it. If I eat my toast in my fridge will I get less toast sweat? What should I set my house thermostat to? My guess is setting the room temperate as high as possible (and as close to Murray temperature as possible) would be best but I'd like to know for sure.
Ellipsis753··on Experiment: Eliminating Toast Sweat
This is amazing. Keep up the good work. I'd be quite happy if governments would give small grants to this kind of every day useful research. I personally eat large amounts of toast so this is an issue very close to my heart. Here in the UK toast is often balanced on it's side against something to avoid this. I believe you can also buy a small toast rack for this purpose. (However I often fear that this cools the toast too quickly.)

I'd be interested to know next if it's possible for the plate to be too hot?

Ellipsis753··on Learn CSS Layout
This is a great tutorial and helps me a lot by just reminding me of things.

There's a mistake at http://learnlayout.com/float-layout.html though were they talk about clearfix and how they are using it without actually using it on that page. I just thought I'd say that here in case the author reads it.

Ellipsis753··on Show HN: Untrusted, a JavaScript adventure game you play by modifying its source
It's fixed now with the servers no longer overloaded (although for some reason I had to start again).

What was happening was that the highlighting of you and the boss were not showing. So just the page without anything interactive.

Ellipsis753··on Microsoft ends support for Windows XP and Office 2003
I've heard a few people saying that they're staying with Windows XP in their company internally. The idea being that as the internal computers share a single access point to the Internet that they can filter everything incoming there.

This doesn't really sound correct and obviously it won't help for physically bringing in USB sticks etc but I'm still interested to know what others think here?

Is there about to be a large number of 3rd party firewalls trying to protect internet computers from Windows XP exploits?

Ellipsis753··on Dirt Cheap Dirty Boards
This is the best photo I've found: http://hackaday.com/2014/04/08/dirt-cheap-dirty-boards-offer...
Ellipsis753··on Show HN: Untrusted, a JavaScript adventure game you play by modifying its source
Does anyone know of a nice way to unlock levels for the mirror? I'm on the first jQuery one but all I see is black text on a white screen. No players and nothing changes when I use the arrow keys. I can't find anything in the code I can edit either. I'd like to try the mirror but I don't want to have to play though the whole game again?
Ellipsis753··on How many people does it take to colonize another star system?
Living forever is somewhat an exception. But even if people live forever there will still be a hard bound. Imagine a population of 8 people (4 couples). With one child per couple the first 4 couples will have 4 kids. These 4 kids will have on child per couple giving 2 kids. The 2 kids make a single couple which can have one more kid. The last kid cannot make a couple with anyone without someone having had more than one kid. So starting with 16 immortal people having immortal kids you cannot get a population above 15. (8+4+2+1=15)

So for a stable population in the long run couples need to be having on average around 2 kids each (assuming they are not immortal, if everyone is immortal then no kids are required for a stable population).

Of course if we take "couple" very literally then perhaps we might allow people to have as many kids as they chose provided they have each with a different partner (to form a new "couple"). This seems like rule bending though.

Without rule bending one kid per couple just couldn't work in the long run.

Ellipsis753··on Raspberry Pi Compute Module
Looks really cool but I'm slightly disappointed to see that when buying these Compute Modules in bulk they still each cost about the same as a single full Raspberry Pi (Version A). The Compute Modules do have 4gb of built in flash that the Version A doesn't have though.
Ellipsis753··on How many people does it take to colonize another star system?
"Whereas in the simulations, the larger populations were allowed to have only one child per couple".

This seemed a little strange to me. If you have only a single child per couple wouldn't you expect the population to at least half each generation?

Ellipsis753··on Show HN: InstaMotor – Taking the pain out of selling your car
Yes. Other than that it seemed pretty great.
Ellipsis753··on Show HN: InstaMotor – Taking the pain out of selling your car
I like the idea but wanted to point out something that confused me. Car value: $100000 Average Dealership Trade-In Offer: $80,000 — $85,000 With Instamotor: $95,000 You Earn: $10,000

The way it says "you earn" I can't help but think that that is the total amount you will get. I would prefer it to say "you earn $95,000. $10,000 more than you would have with a dealership". Or something similar.

Ellipsis753··on Wu-Tang Clan Offered $5M for New Album Only Available as One Copy
Oh right. Ok. I thought you meant CDs in general. I think it's been said now though that you get the rights to copy it if you buy this one.
Ellipsis753··on Google splits into GOOG and GOOGL today
Well hobbies to Google or not they're still big businesses compared to most (and most are growing). Actually having a lot of small "hobbies" seem quite a good way to diversify. Although they still make most (I think) of their profits from the main search they're clearly still making a lot from all the other things that they do. It's not like they lose money on them all or anything.
Ellipsis753··on Wu-Tang Clan Offered $5M for New Album Only Available as One Copy
I'm getting down voted for this so I'd be interested to know why. You really do get rights for a friend if they have their own copy. So it doesn't cost millions.
Ellipsis753··on Show HN: Hash your work and store it in a bank transfer for priority statement
Good idea in theory but it doesn't really work. If someone (like you) can change the code that the client gets then they can simply remove or fake the hash checking code.
Ellipsis753··on Google splits into GOOG and GOOGL today
Well I wouldn't say they have only a single line of business. Yes, they make pretty much all of their profits from advertising. However they no longer just do searches. They do email, file hosting etc. You name it and they probably do it. They do make money from ways other than advertising too. They have quite a few pay to use services. Like business emails or Google Drive.
