EleanorKonik··on Typora 1.0
Maybe check out the new Typewriter theme for Obsidian + Focus Mode plugin?

EleanorKonik··on Typora 1.0
Typora is nice for the clean WYSIWYG editing experience, but now that Obsidian has Live Preview mode (currently in Insider-access beta) I had actually just uninstalled Typora because I was having trouble updating it and didn't feel like dealing with figuring out why.

I guess the new licensing is why, heh.

EleanorKonik··on A different approach to note-taking and research
Oh that's what this is doing. Thank you for the explanation; I couldn't quite figure out what they meant by "take notes horizontally" until I saw this comment. It just looked like dual panes at first.

I guess it's hard to convey with static screenshots

EleanorKonik··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
This. I help moderate for the community surrounding Obsidian.md. We have a discourse forum, a subreddit, and a discord. The discord is by far the easiest place to actually get help — and not because the forum isn't active (it is) but because it's real-time and there's always someone around.

Whenever I have to go find a forum for a product I'm using that doesn't have a discord, I have to twiddle my thumbs for a day before maybe getting asked a clarifying question.

Sure, there's a "static knowledge base" but in my experience, most search features suck for figuring out if something has already been asked before, but at least discord doesn't make you feel dumb for not having found the old relevant thing already. Plus, it's a lot harder than it used to be when I was active on jcink boards to actually trawl all the new content (a problem for me because I write the community newsletter every week — consistently the one thing I don't actually read all of is the forum. I'm able to keep up with everything else, including twitter).

I understand the value of threading, but don't underestimate the value of linear, chronological thought, either. As a moderator, there's a lot of emotional relief in being able to be sure that I saw everything, and didn't miss a new comment in a thread I stopped reading a week ago.

EleanorKonik··on How to run better meetings: use the jury model
I was disappointed that the end was just like "oh and here are some weird examples of juries going horribly wrong" without making any suggestions for how to address analogous situations in corporate meetings.
EleanorKonik··on RSS is wonderful
Man, this makes me miss StumbleUpon :(
EleanorKonik··on Mastodon: AGPLv3 FOSS social network server
What's the best way to find interesting people if you've already got an account and don't want to switch instances but your local instance is a little slow these days and you'd like to liven up your feed?
EleanorKonik··on Mastodon: AGPLv3 FOSS social network server
I really enjoy the scholar.social instance for my particular usecase, but yeah the network effects are real :(

The Roam reddit team banned the guy who runs RoamStack [1] (who apparently hangs out on their Reddit answering questions a bunch?) for saying that a new policy announcement (that they later deleted) sounded concerning [2]. I believe they later rescinded the ban once they realized who he was.

So I think it's slightly more complicated than that, unfortunately.

(Note: I'm a moderator for Obsidian.md but I'm also in a couple of discords with Roam users, Logseq users, etc.)

Some folks use a remote desktop or put their files on a private github repo so they can edit them remotely, but it's not "the full experience."

I use Johnny Decimal style files & folders with Obsidian and it's great. I wrote about how (and why) I implemented my Johnny Decimal system into Obsidian here, if it helps: https://eleanorkonik.com/yet-another-hot-take-on-folders-ver...
EleanorKonik··on Sinch to acquire Mailgun
Ghost just won't let users upgrade from a complimentary plan right now and it's _maddening_ because I had to comp a bunch of people who would probably be happy to pay me if it wasn't a hassle, because of a billing error.

I wish more businesses knew this lesson :(

EleanorKonik··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
I've been having success with Dropbox/Dropsync into the Obsidian directory on my android device, and I know some folks have been using Syncthing without a hitch. The paid Obsidian Sync is just the only one they promise to "fully support" since they can't bugfix other apps, as far as I know.

There's a toggle for whether you want updates. You can also download the installers for each version onto your local machine if you want to revert or stick to a particular version.

Good to know about them being about the same. Thanks! I'm still trying to figure out the outlining workflow and I've heard such different reports about all the different options that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around everything. I think I'd prefer the "Logseq folder in Obsidian" approach myself.

O/T: I usually lurk on HN since I'm very developer-adjacent (my husband and most of my friends are engineers so I like to have stuff to talk about at dinner/parties), but this was finally a thread where I knew something relevant haha. Nice to meet you!

I've heard good things about the LogSeq/Obsidian interoperability, but out of curiosity, have you tried the Outliner plugin for Obsidian? I haven't gotten a good sense of how the two differ.

I use Dropbox via DropSync and it's been working great for months. I'm told by folks in the Discord that Dropbox mobile app itself probably works, I just personally preferred the (free) DropSync app for syncing with my Dropbox account.
